APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday June 5, 2005 (MJD 53527) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph Snedden (swing) Mike Harvanek Jurek Krzesinski Visitors: Mark Rabbage (BBC) Jackie Diehl (NSO) Will Hostetter (U. Idaho) Hiro Shimoyama (U. Idaho) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We imaged 17 N from lambda -6 to +20. We imaged 290 N from mu 226.3 to 254.9 (if we can trust the mu coordinates from seeingRun). We got data on plate 2185 but did not finish it. It was photometric all night but we lost about 2 hours of imaging to variable seeing (07:30Z to 09:30Z). Details from some of the imaging runs (5390 tonight) are not making it into the Imaging Summary section of the log. This happened the last 2 nights also. Does anyone know what might cause this? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing Shift: ------------ Cleaned out 53525 data from /data/astro and /data/photo (Watcher was throwing disk space errors). Also cleaned some old PT data from hoggpt. The rest of swing shift was uneventful. Night: ------ After opening the telescope we mounted the imager. The weather seems to be very good tonight so we'll begin with imaging. Run 5389: On-telescope bias. Run 5390: 17 N. Everything (pointing, seeing, focus, photometricity) good by frame 41 (lambda -6). Note however, that twilight did not officially end until frame 54 (lambda -4), which (not coincidentally) was also the start of the ramp. Nice job Jurek! Almost immediately after twilight ended we started to get small excursions from photometricity (beginning around frame 60, lambda -3.2, 03:52Z). The excursions were not severe (cloud camera deviation did not get much above 7) but were definitely present. Around 04:30Z, Jurek noticed a bug on the cloud camera and decided to clean the mirror. (Note that Jurek is the source of the large cloud camera standard deviation from about 04:30Z to 04:40Z.) After he cleaned the mirror, the standard deviation dropped by a factor of 2-3. The thought here is that the dust added a significant amount of Poisson noise. The bottom line is that we believe it has been photometric since the beginning of this run and the small structure that was present in the cloud camera may have been enhanced by the extra Poisson noise due to the dust. So we are calling this run good from frame 41, lambda -6 to the end (frame 215, lambda +20). Jackie Diehl provided a delicious dinner for all. Dinner consisted of brisket, potatos, green beans, flour tortillas, apple pie and vanilla ice cream. Jurek provided watermelon. Thanks Jackie and Jurek! The "excuse" for dinner was the completion of 17 N (the completion of north survey imaging) but really, Jackie was just being her normally nice self. We got several watcher warnings of no gang transfer from id6 and so we forced a teamster. makeRunLog for 5390 failed. We forced it manually and it created the run log. However, the data for 5390 did not make it into the Imaging Summary section of the log. We filled in some of the details by hand. This has happened 3 nights in a row now. Does anyone know what causes this? Run 5391: 290 N. Segue. We started at mu = 225.5 but tccmon reported mu to be almost 20 degrees higher (244.8). However, emails from Steve Kent and Brian Yanny earlier today informed us that this was okay. (Thanks for the quick response guys, and on the weekend to boot!). This run was good from the beginning (frame 10, mu 226.3). Seeing went bad around frame 200 (mu 254.9) according to seeingRun - can we trust seeingRun or is it corrupt like tccmon for stripe 290? Note that skippy outputs a variable called AMU0 that appears to match the seeingRun mu. We continued imaging hoping the wind would swing around west of south again. The wind direction did change and the seeing improved eventually but it took long enough that we decided to end this run and back up to where the seeing first went bad. Run 5392: 290 N. Segue. This run was good from the beginning (frame 10, mu 251.3). However, the wind soon went east of south again and the seeing went bad shortly thereafter. seeingRun called it bad at frame 39, mu 255.7. We continued in the hope that the seeing would improve but gave up and switched to spectro after 55 more frames of what ended up being bad seeing data. This run probably does not contain enough good data to be useful. Plate 2185 (cartridge 7): Segue faint. Guide stars on the gotoField. We got 2 exposures (2100 sec total) before closing up but this was not enough to finish this plate. The 2nd exposure finished about 10 minutes after the plate had expired. endNight is still running. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5388 23:14Z 23:42Z 100 O -47.67 -40.79 51 ignore 5389 03:01Z 03:17Z 100 O 9.16 13.23 41 bias on-telescope 5390 17 N +20 215 science good from frame 41 on 5391 05:29Z 08:21Z 290 N 40.92 83.95 299 science bad seeing after frame 200 5392 08:23Z 09:17Z 290 N 65.78 79.29 103 science bad seeing after frame 39, probably not enough good data ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- See the main log. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5390 21 4 25 -7.800 0.760 0.100 0.715 0.00356 242 62 5390 25 4 45 -7.000 0.476 0.200 0.342 0.06526 242 62 5390 50 4 32 -6.800 0.150 0.000 0.104 0.00142 242 63 5390 73 4 47 -6.700 0.168 -0.200 0.110 0.00096 242 63 5390 125 4 50 -6.700 0.123 -0.400 0.093 0.00132 241 63 5390 167 4 46 -7.900 0.119 -0.800 0.117 0.00140 240 63 5390 178 4 42 -7.300 0.117 -0.800 0.097 0.00091 240 63 5391 12 4 72 -2.000 0.158 2.300 0.165 -0.01599 177 35 5391 17 4 74 -1.700 0.173 2.300 0.137 -0.01503 177 35 5391 62 4 53 -1.400 0.156 2.100 0.135 -0.01167 179 40 5391 87 4 59 -2.200 0.158 2.200 0.171 -0.01016 180 42 5391 113 4 64 -2.000 0.106 2.400 0.136 -0.00839 181 45 5391 165 4 57 -3.200 0.095 2.500 0.099 -0.00504 184 50 5391 286 4 35 -3.700 0.124 2.900 0.130 0.00430 196 62 5392 11 4 56 -5.100 0.187 -0.900 0.134 -0.00564 212 46 5392 60 4 52 -7.800 0.141 -0.100 0.108 -0.00344 218 50 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5390 31 1 63 298 15 -10.239 0.485 -10.438 0.079 0.03509 5390 31 1 63 298 16 -6.399 0.548 -10.335 0.064 0.03475 5390 31 1 63 298 19 -2.035 0.741 -10.374 0.121 0.03488 5390 31 1 63 298 5 2.880 0.498 -10.535 0.080 0.03542 5390 31 1 63 298 14 6.073 0.630 -10.237 0.090 0.03442 5390 48 1 63 298 19 0.319 0.180 -0.936 0.186 0.00315 5390 48 1 63 298 11 0.238 0.130 -0.921 0.054 0.00310 5390 48 1 63 298 19 0.480 0.143 -0.878 0.121 0.00295 5390 48 1 63 298 24 0.431 0.101 -0.931 0.101 0.00313 5390 48 1 63 298 11 0.364 0.128 -0.897 0.150 0.00302 5390 83 1 63 298 10 0.054 0.240 -0.875 0.126 0.00294 5390 83 1 63 298 17 -0.142 0.242 -0.828 0.112 0.00278 5390 83 1 63 298 16 -0.049 0.220 -0.703 0.129 0.00236 5390 83 1 63 298 12 -0.159 0.092 -0.759 0.144 0.00255 5390 83 1 63 298 15 -0.199 0.146 -0.847 0.121 0.00285 5390 100 1 63 298 15 -0.300 0.121 -0.575 0.163 0.00193 5390 100 1 63 298 21 -0.443 0.145 -0.625 0.122 0.00210 5390 100 1 63 298 16 -0.326 0.170 -0.532 0.102 0.00179 5390 100 1 63 298 12 -0.432 0.107 -0.637 0.071 0.00214 5390 100 1 63 298 7 -0.567 0.069 -0.730 0.089 0.00245 5390 136 1 63 299 21 0.760 0.247 -0.887 0.084 0.00298 5390 136 1 63 299 16 0.756 0.200 -0.908 0.170 0.00305 5390 136 1 63 299 17 0.741 0.137 -0.867 0.157 0.00292 5390 136 1 63 299 9 0.678 0.111 -0.818 0.149 0.00275 5390 136 1 63 299 14 0.717 0.106 -0.794 0.171 0.00267 5390 152 1 63 299 7 0.189 0.043 -0.915 0.104 0.00308 5390 152 1 63 299 18 0.241 0.098 -0.974 0.166 0.00327 5390 152 1 63 299 12 0.204 0.092 -0.821 0.235 0.00276 5390 152 1 63 299 14 0.139 0.107 -0.925 0.289 0.00311 5390 152 1 63 299 18 0.205 0.084 -1.093 0.218 0.00367 5390 187 1 63 300 14 0.635 0.112 -1.037 0.095 0.00349 5390 187 1 63 300 8 0.628 0.086 -0.826 0.139 0.00278 5390 187 1 63 300 13 0.682 0.101 -0.770 0.095 0.00259 5390 187 1 63 300 22 0.770 0.085 -0.893 0.118 0.00300 5390 187 1 63 300 12 0.657 0.130 -0.795 0.110 0.00267 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): YES UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 32985, plate 1647 ------- 23:50 32985 0.0 bias 23:54 32986 10.0 flat 23:57 32987 2.0 arc 00:05 32988 2.1 arc 00:07 32989 2.1 arc ----- sequence 32990, plate -9999 ------- 02:04 32990 0.0 bias 02:44 32991 0.0 bias ----- sequence 32992, plate 2185 ------- 13.0 12.4 13.7 10.5 09:44 32992 10.0 flat 09:46 32993 2.0 arc 10:10 32994 1200.1 target 10:28 32995 900.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:59Z imager 298.06 0.0000 62.90 0.0000 38.27 0.0000 1.000000 07:00Z imager -3.73 0.0000 49.63 0.0000 43.95 0.0000 1.000000 08:49Z imager -37.28 0.0000 48.89 0.0000 15.96 0.0000 1.000000 10:01Z 7 2185 250.87 0.0011 49.49 0.0000 100.00 -0.0215 1.000140 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8626 -
