APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday July 10, 2005 (MJD 53562) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta Kleinman Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds covered the sky most of the first part of the night, but always appeared as if they were going away in 30 minutes. We finally opened to get one exposure on plate 2255 before being fooled again by a clear sky camera and IR weather map. A switch to imaging, followed by fritzing with needed pointing offsets, was made moot by clouds that continued to toy with us resulting in no useful data. We ended the night with two exposures on plate 2259 and a bottle of Martinelli's. As this is our last night here on the SDSS-I telescopes, I have to say I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have stumbled across such a wonderful project staffed and energized by such a terrific and talented group of people. The opportunities I've been given here have made me both a better astronomer and person and I think all of you for this wonderful result and project. Hope to stay in touch - we will be SDSS-II collaboration members, so you're not getting rid of us completely. Thanks, everyone. I am proud to say, "I survived (the) SDSS"! (Pins are still available - contact me. :>) Scot and Atsuko ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Clouds cover the sky as we begin our final night Observing for the SDSS. 04:51Z: Starting to look safely clear and Landru has turned itself off or crashed or something. We had to hit the power button to get it alive again - ie. all the lights were off and no one was home. False alarm anyhow- clouds came back.... 06:42Z: the clouds stopped playing with us and we are open - starting with cart 5 plate 2255. GSOTGTF. Due to delays in pauseStare (and forgetting to add time to the resumeStare), the final 1m "mini-exposure" is only about 47s. We ended up with a 5.4 SN^s on b2 as the low and 184.1 on r2 as the high. Cool! BTW - can someone PLEASE send us a simple text-file with the new overloading of object types so we know what object we're looking at in SEGUE plates for QA? We don't need anything fancy- a simple ASCII file would do just nicely, thanks you. Also, are the bright stars on this plate named some unique way so we can make sure we look at those extracted spectra to see how we did? 07:18Z exposure done - skies clear and looking promising, so we switch to imaging. 07:38Z: switch made- start imaging strip 1188S starting scan at mu=300. Initial skippy shows pointing is off: rotator by 0.1deg, nu by 13.7". Pointing corrections done by frame 39, mu=305, except we got the rotator correction sign wrong (the skippy/logTool sign inconsistency gotcha) and tried again. Good by frame 45, mu=306.Oops again- got the az sign wrong - new correction in by 58, mu=308. This means science started around mu=310. 08:24Z: Not so fast- 10 frames later, rotator error is too high again and nu error is rapidly increasing - see skippy log section. We enter new calib offsets and try again. These all in by frame 100, mu=314. Clouds also came in at this time. Of course. 08:55Z clouds gone by frame 137, mu=320. clouds back around frame 167, mu=324. We give up and switch back to spectroscopy. Sigh. 09:30Z on to cart 4 plate 2259. No GSOTGTF, but previous offsets from the last time this plate was observed worked. (We cleared the imager offsets before goingToField.) 09:38Z Attempts at guiding were confounded by a slowly-responding TCC - taking one frame, but no more. Several start/stops and a tccClose/restart still failed. Following JCB's folklore, we issued a new gotoField -gflat and tried again. This didn't work either. We rebooted the guiderMac, set inst to spectro, did a new gflat and now things worked. We also note that fiber 11 contains a binary star. We disabled it for guiding. 10:06Z we finally start science. 10:48Z Two exposures done. We start endNight for the last time. We and endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5441 23:59Z 00:05Z 100 O -2.13 -0.45 18 ignore 5442 00:18Z 00:43Z 100 O 2.70 9.11 57 ignore 5443 07:37Z 09:15Z 1188 S 115.33 139.86 178 ignore sigh ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5443 12 1 6 3.300 1.614 13.700 1.022 -0.10501 41 64 5443 22 4 15 -8.000 2.082 35.100 2.549 -0.07099 43 65 5443 58 2 3 4.800 0.008 1.900 0.165 -0.01770 52 67 5443 65 2 10 9.600 2.234 -3.800 2.268 0.03582 54 67 5443 66 3 49 0.400 0.667 -10.400 0.295 0.07858 54 68 5443 72 4 67 -2.700 0.163 -10.500 0.094 0.08470 56 68 az and alt corrections in. 5443 89 4 106 0.500 0.173 -0.400 0.128 0.08568 61 69 5443 93 4 109 0.700 0.405 -0.500 0.450 0.08768 62 69 rotator correction in: 5443 100 4 104 1.700 0.199 -0.600 0.138 0.00205 64 69 5443 127 4 164 1.800 0.219 -1.400 0.156 0.00409 74 71 5443 146 4 166 2.000 0.186 -2.200 0.117 0.00498 81 72 5443 147 4 163 2.100 0.181 -2.200 0.123 0.00497 82 72 5443 157 4 156 2.100 0.184 -2.600 0.138 0.00604 86 72 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5443 34 1 66 133 5 6.907 8.731 -0.549 8.210 0.00185 5443 34 1 66 133 11 13.027 5.330 0.062 10.390 -0.00021 5443 34 1 66 133 7 3.305 8.817 6.643 5.946 -0.02233 5443 34 1 66 133 4 -2.295 8.279 3.251 9.039 -0.01093 5443 34 1 66 133 8 1.613 7.902 6.720 9.173 -0.02259 5443 51 1 67 129 59 29.578 0.361 -33.651 0.142 0.11314 5443 51 1 67 129 67 30.483 0.406 -33.622 0.164 0.11304 5443 51 1 67 129 63 31.462 0.404 -33.487 0.183 0.11259 5443 51 1 67 129 44 32.352 0.410 -33.340 0.141 0.11209 5443 51 1 67 129 5 8.892 4.530 -8.803 9.048 0.02960 5443 104 1 70 112 37 -0.374 0.123 -1.530 0.147 0.00514 5443 104 1 70 112 42 -0.047 0.115 -1.351 0.141 0.00454 5443 104 1 70 112 29 0.413 0.165 -1.352 0.147 0.00455 5443 104 1 70 112 27 0.819 0.136 -1.363 0.126 0.00458 5443 104 1 70 112 32 1.130 0.170 -1.477 0.125 0.00496 5443 120 1 71 106 77 0.232 0.146 -1.867 0.167 0.00628 5443 120 1 71 106 77 0.639 0.129 -1.715 0.212 0.00577 5443 120 1 71 106 76 0.972 0.145 -1.704 0.267 0.00573 5443 120 1 71 106 74 1.301 0.132 -1.770 0.219 0.00595 5443 120 1 71 106 78 1.601 0.138 -1.809 0.182 0.00608 5443 156 1 72 92 62 -2.315 0.141 -3.485 0.152 0.01172 5443 156 1 72 92 57 -1.896 0.116 -3.282 0.136 0.01103 5443 156 1 72 92 61 -1.403 0.198 -3.357 0.211 0.01129 5443 156 1 72 92 60 -0.966 0.157 -3.469 0.262 0.01166 5443 156 1 72 92 54 -0.676 0.133 -3.496 0.253 0.01175 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33335, plate -9999 ------- 23:33 33335 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33336, plate 2259 ------- 23:44 33336 10.0 flat 23:47 33337 2.0 arc ----- sequence 33338, plate -9999 ------- 00:17 33338 0.0 bias 05:00 33339 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33340, plate 2255 ------- 06:51 33340 10.0 flat 06:53 33341 2.0 arc 07:17 33342 900.1 target 7.3 5.8 5.4 184.1 ----- sequence 33343, plate 2259 ------- 10:02 33343 10.0 flat 10:04 33344 2.0 arc 10:28 33345 1200.1 target 10:46 33346 900.1 target 19.4 14.6 19.0 16.4 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:57Z 5 0 253.00 0.0070 58.87 0.0047 94.78 -0.0172 1.000100 06:58Z 5 2255 252.97 0.0070 58.66 0.0047 94.91 -0.0172 1.000100 08:13Z imager 125.43 0.0004 67.71 0.0092 253.05 -0.0710 1.000000 08:53Z imager 102.50 0.0007 71.41 0.0062 238.06 0.0147 1.000000 10:07Z 4 2259 -56.52 0.0034 63.01 0.0051 133.11 0.0000 1.000050 10:08Z 4 2259 -56.79 0.0035 62.88 0.0053 132.92 0.0189 1.000050 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8753 Stays: JL8760 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 06:57Z 5 0 1.00010 -988 237 -100 253 58.8 16.8 8 190 06:58Z 5 2255 1.00010 -988 238 -100 253 58.6 16.9 6 208 08:13Z imager 1.00000 0 -528 -399 125 67.7 16.3 9 189 i-23 1.3 10:08Z 4 2259 1.00005 -494 637 -100 -57 62.9 14.8 12 193 gdr 1.1 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:33Z 76 28 12 279 (W) 572 -
