APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 5, 2005 (MJD 53619) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington Steph Snedden Kaike Pan Support: Jon Brinkmann ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! Supernova imaging. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- More crummy weather. We replaced a neon lamp. No on-sky science. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: ----------- Swing shift tasks were completed with a few problems: * We noted that both the grade 5 and grade 2 N2 dewars are just above 500 and will need to be swapped out soon. * The spectrograph chiller gauge is reading about 22, not 28. It has been this way since last week or longer, and this may be the new nominal setting. If so, we should change the label on the gauge. * Sirrobert was unresponsive. We had to do a hard reboot, at which point we got an error about eth0 failing and not finding the xserver on sdsshost. We reseated every ethernet cable connection we could find going to sirrobert and rebooted, with success. Night: ----- Clouds, rain, high humidity, thunder. You name it, we got it. Neon lamp: We ran a sequence of arcs again tonight in hopes of catching miscreant neon lamp 4 in the act, and finally we were successful. The neon lamp 4 indicator on the system status did not light up, and sure enough, the lamp was not on. This is the lower right lamp if you are standing at the back of the telescope, looking forward to the flat field screens. It failed completely; was not intermittent at all. I suspect the past few nights it was starting to fail, and tonight it went fully. We replaced the lamp with a used one that was not labeled 'bad'. There are no new neon bulbs that Jon B. knows of. Before swapping the bulb, we turned off the power supply and checked the fuses as a matter of course (we knew the problem was not a bad fuse, but as long as we had the power supply off, we thought we'd see if they looked undamaged). They actually showed some wear, so we replaced them. At this time we noticed that the fuse holder in the left side of the power supply was apparently broken. It is a bayonet type, but does not lock into place in a quarter of a turn. We also now cannot remove the new fuse, unless we want to just use brute force. A PR was filed. The new-used lamp was tested and found to work fine, aside from the usual NLAMPS going out of spec when it was on too long. Archiver error message: dsc W archNoFtp was seen for id2 and id4 while writing frame 1 during our bias drift. There were no visible DA failures from our end as a result of this error. Should we be concerned about this error? Cleaned the cloud camera with alcohol after a bit of rain fell on it and we noticed it was dirty. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5570 22:43Z 23:00Z 100 O 35.12 39.31 42 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):n QA Procedures Done (y/n):n UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33850, plate -9999 ------- 22:53 33850 0.0 bias 00:07 33851 0.0 bias 00:17 33852 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33853, plate 2260 ------- Tests of Neon lamp 4 03:10 33853 10.0 flat 03:12 33854 2.0 arc 03:15 33855 2.0 arc 03:17 33856 2.0 arc 03:19 33857 2.0 arc 03:22 33858 2.0 arc 03:24 33859 2.0 arc 03:26 33860 2.0 arc 03:28 33861 2.0 arc 03:31 33862 2.0 arc 03:33 33863 2.0 arc 04:49 33864 10.0 flat 04:51 33865 2.0 arc 04:53 33866 2.0 arc 04:56 33867 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:20Z 60 55 9 216 (SW) -9999 - m cloudy 23:50Z 58 55 1 195 (SSW) -9999 - ' 00:20Z 56 55 2 261 (W) -9999 - ' 00:52Z 55 56 13 238 (WSW) -9999 - ' 01:24Z 55 54 12 162 (SSE) -9999 - ' 01:57Z 52 50 15 108 (ESE) -9999 - ' 02:29Z 52 50 14 78 (ENE) -9999 - ' 03:01Z 53 49 14 112 (ESE) -9999 - ' 03:33Z 53 51 14 110 (ESE) -9999 - ' 04:05Z 54 50 14 137 (SE) -9999 - ' 04:37Z 53 51 12 149 (SSE) -9999 - ' 05:09Z 52 53 11 166 (SSE) -9999 - ' 05:41Z 54 51 9 189 (S) -9999 - ' 06:13Z 54 51 9 180 (S) -9999 - ' 06:45Z 54 52 8 183 (S) -9999 - ' 07:17Z 54 51 10 180 (S) -9999 - ' 07:50Z 53 51 13 158 (SSE) -9999 - ' 08:22Z 53 51 14 152 (SSE) -9999 - ' 08:54Z 52 51 12 144 (SE) -9999 - ' 09:26Z 52 52 12 143 (SE) -9999 - ' 09:58Z 52 52 11 163 (SSE) -9999 - ' 10:31Z 52 51 13 148 (SSE) -9999 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Never ventilated the building, never opened.
