APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday November 29, 2005 (MJD 53704) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington Dan Long Mike Harvanek (swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernova science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Supernova imaging for most of the night. Run 5918 imaged 82 N from 120 to -123 under clear dark skies and mostly good seeing. Attempts at Legacy imaging foiled at first by a brief bout of clouds, then later by worsening seeing. Run 5921 imaged 17 S for about 80 frames, the last 20 of which were changed from acceptable to bad in seeingRun. We were unable to do spectroscopy at the end of the night due to the displays hanging up the DA (see PR 6781). We did make some headway on the mysterious grabInst failures. It turns out that when anyone except observer attempts to grab the spectrographs, it fails and in such a way that no one else can grab them either until that original session is quit. See PR 6782. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Due to emergency closure training, there was not time to do a spectro collimation check. Since it is a supernova night, the collimation check will be done if/before the switch to spectroscopy. Spectro grabInst problem is still with us. Restart of servers by Craig's sequence of start_servers commands did not change anything A grope of the situation was done and 30307 and 30310 were there despite Howard's sop protestations to the contrary. All subsequent attempts to grab instruments in Howard's or anyone else's sop session yielded an error message saying socket 30410 was already in use. Traceback for the two messages are in the problem section. After lots of permutations we found the following: When someone other than observer attempts to grab the instruments, they get the error that 30307, and 30310 don't exist (when they actually do). Once that happens, no one will be able to grab the instruments and they see the 30410 already in use message. It turns out that the port is kept by that first non-observer sop session despite it saying grabInst failed, and dropping the instruments doesn't change that. Quitting the non-observer sop session frees the port and then an observer run sop session can grab the instruments. Night: ------ The imager was mounted before sunset and an on-telescope bias (run 5917) was taken in the darkened enclosure. 00:10Z Enclosure Open 00:55Z Run 5918 82 N Skippy good from the start (no offsets needed today either) . In focus from frame 17 Interesting object (airplane?) in frames 26 and 27 z chip, dewar 1. For a minute there Howard thought he had number 6! :) 01:16Z Frame 43 Lambda 118, start of ramp 01:24Z Frame 57 lambda 120, start of science (end of twilight) Seeing is marginal, running between 1.5 and 2.0 arcseconds most of the time. From about frame 100, lambda 126 seeing settled down to survey spec. Since it is clear with no moon, this is survey quality data. There was a tick up to marginal between frames 128 and 148, lambda 130.6 to 133.6. 05:30Z Frame 465 lambda 181.2, seeing blows up to between 1.5 and a little over 2 arcseconds. 09:01Z Frame 825 lambda -125, start of ramp 09:20Z Run 5919 18 S from -66 to - ignore (clouds) Skippy and focus good from the start Of course, after being photometric all night, within 5 minutes of switching to a legacy stripe, clouds begin forming overhead. Clouds fading and moving off to the east quickly. 09:40Z Run 5920 18 S from -67 to - ignore (would leave .2 hour gap) After the clouds leave, this one is not going to fit before twilight anymore so bailing and going for the shorter 17 S bit. Back in the clear now, but for how long? 09:46Z Run 5921 17 S from -61 to -51.3 (incl ramps) Skippy and focus good from the start Frame 19 ramp start Frame 33 science start Seeing acceptable for the entire run until frame 80. seeingRun then called it bad from about frame 60. Ending the drift and switching to spectroscopy :(. 10:35Z instChange 10:51Z cartridge 4 2287 When trying a preCal (the first spectro exposure in about eight hours) it failed as if the instruments were not grabbed ( goStare failed trying again 5 times). Dropped and regrabbed, but got a message saying exposure was paused rather than issuing the checks. Tried checking daqBusy and found it high. A readoutAbort didn't clear it. We rebooted the spectro crate and the monitors came up flickering the usual id info rather than having it solidly displayed. Then instead of a blue screen, a rectangular area of blue was centered on the screen with text in red saying "Out of Range". Is this the monitor saying it lost the input signal? Three additional attempts at rebooting, none worked. Monitors stayed black the entire time. This is similar behavior to what happened earlier in the day and more than once already this run. It sure looks like a bad connection somewhere from what we briefly saw on the monitors (like a bad sync signal on a television). 11:30Z With less than an hour left in the night we decided to throw in the towel. 11:40Z Enclosure Closed. 11:50Z endNight rejoiced ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
