APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday December 1, 2005 (MJD 53706) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington Kaike Pan Mike Harvanek (swing) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Completed two plates (1905, 2060). Got 3.5 exposures on plate 2302. Problem: ---MCP Menu gives false information. --- endNight does not run. (see problem section) Weather: photometric skies, bad seeing, high wind in second half of the night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation was adjusted: sp1> mechPiston 2000 sp2> mechPiston 2000 sp1 Coll_motor_A -14703 Coll_motor_B -14716 Coll_motor_C -14211 sp2 Coll_motor_A -7517 Coll_motor_B -10755 Coll_motor_C -10103 The spectrographs are currently collimated for a temp of approximately -1 degree C. A postCal after the adjustment showed all x/wsigma values to be in spec. No problems to report. Night: ------ 01:24Z Cart 02, plate 1905. FK5 star is used to find the field. For some reason, seeing is bad and varies significantly (between 2.0" and 3.3") thought winds come from west. Due to the bad seeing, Howard has to twist to focus setting up. He moves relative focus 300 units on both + and - directions but see differences barely. We start our first exposure at about moment the twilight ends, so lost about 10 min bad-seeing-observing-time. Guiding fibers may be dirty on this cartridge , please check and clean them if needed. Skies are photometric. During the 4th exposure, seeing improve to 1.5". Plate done with six exposure. 04:50Z cart 07, plat 2060, mpunted. Guide stars on goToField. Seeing varies between 1.4"-2.6". When Kaike tried to get (S/N)^2 information from observations on MJD 53682 for this plate, he could not. His webpage (for address http://sos.apo.nmsu.edt/logfile-53682.html#PLATE2060) as following: Plate 2060 - S/N FIGURE (PostScript) b1 r1 b2 r2 EXPTIME AIRTEMP UT QUALITY sdR-b1-00034688.fit: ABORT: Unable to reduce this arc exposure (need flat) sdR-b1-00034689.fit: ABORT: Unable to reduce this science exposure (need flat) sdR-b1-00034689.fit: ABORT: Unable to reduce this science exposure (need arc) With the same address, Howard can get the (S/N)^2 information, and Kaike can also get the information on another machine: landrupe. We do not understand why. With three exposures obtained, this plate is declared done after adding tonight's (S/N)^2 add to a previous MJD53682, see below. Seeing is about 2.5" when the first exposure starts, then go better and worse. get three 30 min exposures. During the 4th exposure, guest wind goes higher than 40 mph, and trend wind goes higher than 30 mph. So we decide to close enclosure. 4th exposure is read out with exp time ~ 800 sec (at 09:15Z). 11:50Z endNight gives the following error message: We sent Fritz and Jon B. an email about this problem. im> endNight Checking to see if /astrolog/murmur.log needs archiving /astrolog/murmur.log does need archiving Checking to see if /astrolog/iop.murmur.log needs archiving /skycat/oplogs/murmurlog/53706/murmur.21:15:32Dec012005.log is already archived, or is /dev/null Checking to see if /astrolog/astroda.v15_4.log needs archiving Error: couldn't stat "/skycat/oplogs/murmurlog/53665/murmur.15:04:19Oct222005.log": No such file or directory im> ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5926 21:48Z 22:05Z 100 O 107.19 111.34 42 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 35109, plate -9999 ------- 21:32 35109 0.0 bias 22:30 35110 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35111, plate 2289 ------- 22:50 35111 10.0 flat 22:52 35112 2.0 arc 22:58 35113 10.0 flat 23:01 35114 2.0 arc 23:10 35115 10.0 flat 23:13 35116 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35117, plate -9999 ------- 23:30 35117 0.0 bias 23:32 35118 0.0 bias 23:35 35119 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35119, plate 1905 ------- 01:18 35120 10.0 flat 01:21 35121 2.0 arc 01:50 35122 1500.1 target 02:22 35123 1500.1 target 02:55 35124 1800.1 target 02:57 35125 10.0 flat 02:59 35126 2.0 arc 03:33 35127 1800.1 target 04:05 35128 1800.2 target 04:38 35129 1800.1 target 04:41 35130 10.0 flat 04:43 35131 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35132, plate 2060 ------- 05:01 35132 10.0 flat 05:03 35133 2.0 arc 05:37 35134 1800.1 target 06:09 35135 1800.1 target 06:26 35136 800.1 target 06:29 35137 10.0 flat 06:31 35138 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35139, plate 2302 ------- 06:47 35139 10.0 flat 06:49 35140 2.0 arc 07:22 35141 1800.1 target 07:55 35142 1800.1 target 08:29 35143 1800.1 target 09:02 35144 1800.1 target 09:18 35145 779.8 target 09:21 35146 10.0 flat 09:23 35147 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:27Z 2 0 39.47 0.0017 50.19 0.0019 212.11 0.0375 1.000050 05:09Z 7 2060 282.70 -0.0012 68.31 0.0020 114.17 0.0090 1.000180 07:10Z 3 2302 170.78 0.0005 60.02 0.0002 -16.83 0.0104 1.000070 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:27Z 2 0 1.00005 -494 972 200 40 50.2 4.4 20 262 2.2 05:09Z 7 2060 1.00018 -1778 -237 100 283 68.3 4.0 18 261 2.5 07:10Z 3 2302 1.00007 -691 630 50 171 60.0 4.2 22 275 2.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:15Z 48 14 11 262 (W) 598 - 21:50Z 44 10 12 241 (WSW) 506 - 22:20Z 46 11 14 239 (WSW) 604 - 22:51Z 43 11 12 235 (SW) 787 - 23:24Z 42 9 13 244 (WSW) 755 - 23:56Z 39 10 15 237 (WSW) 733 - clear 00:53Z 37 12 12 244 (WSW) 883 - 01:25Z 39 12 19 266 (W) 901 - 01:55Z 39 12 17 259 (W) 955 - 02:26Z 39 13 16 236 (SW) 985 - 02:57Z 38 15 16 267 (W) 1176 - 03:27Z 39 13 16 259 (W) 848 - 03:57Z 38 13 17 267 (W) 843 - 04:28Z 38 12 18 260 (W) 834 - 04:58Z 39 11 18 265 (W) 719 - 05:28Z 39 11 21 274 (W) 590 - 05:58Z 39 10 21 274 (W) 580 - 06:29Z 39 10 15 269 (W) 500 - 06:59Z 39 10 20 270 (W) 413 - 07:31Z 39 10 30 285 (WNW) 408 - 08:02Z 39 9 24 278 (W) 303 - 08:32Z 38 10 29 278 (W) 321 - 09:02Z 39 9 27 288 (WNW) 237 - 09:35Z 39 10 25 276 (W) 374 - 10:07Z 38 10 29 297 (WNW) 264 - 10:39Z 38 10 25 285 (WNW) 225 - 11:12Z 39 9 28 285 (WNW) 239 - 11:44Z 38 9 25 289 (WNW) 197 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:45Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:00Z Enclosure off. 09:30Z Enclosure on, doors cracked due to high winds. 12:50Z Fans off, doors and louvers closed.
