APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday January 6, 2006 (MJD 53742) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: Jurek Krzesinski Kaike Pan ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We finished three plate, i.e. 1512, 2331, and 2342. We also got one target and one sky exposure for plate 1245, but SOS refused to reduce the data, can someone look into the problem, and give us a feedback whether the data are useful, please? We imaged 1540 N from mu=153 to 184 but we do not know if the pointing is okay because skippy could not run on more than one frames and in most cases not at all. So we also need here someone to check on the data and give us a feedback - Thanks :). Problems: -- A fuse for Hgcd and Ne lamps was blown and was replaced. -- SOS refused to reduce exposures of plate 1245 (see log and problem section for detail). -- skippy could not run on more than one frame or not at all. ltMatch showed that rotator is ok. (see log for detail). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: No problems with the afternoon check. Spectrograph focus checked and adjusted back to about what it was before yesterday. Now set for around 4 C. As usual details in problem section. Cartridge 8 mounted on telescope. 23:45Z Doors Open, Louvers Open, Fans On 00:10Z Enclosure Open Night: 00:40Z: cart 8, plt 1512 (merged). Waiting for sky becoming dark. During precali process, we got flat but not arc exposure because HgCd and Ne lamps could not be turned on. Fuses for the lamps are checked and found okay. Steph was contacted and told us that there is another power source for the lamps, we found it in another rack and replace the fuse, then lamps work fine. Plate is done with a total exposure time of 6300 s. 04:25Z: cart 2, plt 1245 (orion). stars on goto field. But seeing is extremely bad at the moment. SOS did not reduce arc exposure and reports an error of "sdR-b1-00036362.fit: ABORT: Unable to reduce this arc exposure (need flat)". We check and see the flat file is on SOS disk. We then do sos-redo, SOS still refuse to reduce it and report an error (see problem section). Then we take a post calib, without any luck, SOS still does not reduce the data. For this plate, we took one 900s science exposure, and one sky exposure (RA shifted by -11.25", seeing is over 2.0"). Because we have no idea what are going on here, plus this is priority-1 plate, we decided to switch to higher priority plate 2331 which just becomes available. After we switched to plt 2331, things work fine. Can some body,please look into the problem, give us feedback on whether the exposures on this plate are any good? 05:40Z: cart 6, plt 2331 (seque faint). stars on goto field. Seeing is still bad, over 2.0". Moon sets during exposures of this plate, but seeing varies significantly at the momment, we, therefore, decide to stick on spectrocopy for the time being. The plate is done with a total exposure time of 8120 s. 08:40Z: cart 9, plt 2342 (chunk). stars on goto field. Seeing varies still. The plate is done with a total exposure time of 2220 s. Seeing was good and stable during the last half hour. We decided to switch to imaging. 10:00Z: Run 5976, 1540 N (Segue stripe). offsets from spectroscopy were cleared. ramp starts at frame 21, mu=151. science starsts at frame 34, mu=153. Focus is good since frame 18 if the pointing is good. Unfortunately, skippy can not find enough stars to when it works on some frames. If it works it works on a single frame only finding usualy 2,3 stars, we can not tell if the pointing is okay. On the other hand, ltMatch finds more then 20 stars, and report that rotator is fine. tccmon shows telescope is at the right stripe. Because it is perfect imaging sky and seeing conditions, we decided to let the scan keep going. science ends at frame 241 (mu=184), ramp ends at frame 255 (mu=186). We finished the ramp 1 degree after twilight. 12:48Z: Run 5977, on-telescope bias. 13:30Z endNight finished and happy. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5975 21:23Z 21:37Z 100 O 136.20 139.83 39 ignore 5976 10:16Z 12:45Z 1540 N -36.00 1.43 264 science 5977 12:48Z 13:04Z 100 O 8.22 12.09 40 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5976 13 4 2 -19.000 0.000 -0.900 0.000 0.06838 172 34 5976 15 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 5976 35 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 5976 51 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 5976 56 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 5976 64 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 5976 116 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 5976 166 4 3 39.100 1.347 110.200 2.424 1.11040 187 54 5976 218 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 5976 26 1 36 7 36 2.261 0.185 -2.050 0.369 0.00689 5976 26 1 36 7 31 1.756 0.153 -2.003 0.254 0.00674 5976 26 1 36 7 34 1.586 0.219 -1.773 0.325 0.00596 5976 26 1 36 7 28 1.432 0.202 -1.627 0.366 0.00547 5976 26 1 36 7 24 1.122 0.158 -1.607 0.264 0.00540 5976 89 1 45 2 15 2.368 0.128 -2.751 0.174 0.00925 5976 89 1 45 2 28 2.284 0.094 -2.759 0.172 0.00928 5976 89 1 45 2 22 2.118 0.157 -2.588 0.248 0.00870 5976 89 1 45 2 19 1.893 0.150 -2.420 0.202 0.00814 5976 89 1 45 2 24 1.784 0.250 -2.460 0.228 0.00827 5976 163 1 54 353 15 3.114 0.085 -4.521 0.111 0.01520 5976 163 1 54 353 17 2.959 0.052 -4.240 0.183 0.01426 5976 163 1 54 353 24 2.814 0.093 -4.140 0.192 0.01392 5976 163 1 54 353 13 2.665 0.074 -4.025 0.050 0.01353 5976 163 1 54 353 27 2.469 0.101 -3.935 0.116 0.01323 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 36344, plate 2342 ------- 21:33 36344 10.0 flat 21:35 36345 2.0 arc 21:38 36346 2.1 arc 21:40 36347 2.1 arc 22:03 36348 2.1 arc 22:05 36349 2.1 arc ----- sequence 36350, plate -9999 ------- 23:46 36350 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36351, plate 1512 ------- 14.2 26.3 21.7 30.6 01:32 36351 10.0 flat 02:12 36352 10.0 flat 02:14 36353 2.0 arc 02:38 36354 1200.1 target 03:01 36355 1200.1 target 03:24 36356 1200.1 target 03:46 36357 1200.1 target 03:49 36358 10.0 flat 03:52 36359 2.0 arc 04:20 36360 1500.1 target ----- sequence 36361, plate 1245 ------- 04:40 36361 10.0 flat 04:42 36362 2.0 arc 05:10 36363 900.1 target 05:13 36364 10.0 flat 05:15 36365 2.0 arc 05:38 36366 900.1 target ----- sequence 36367, plate 2331 ------- 55.1 53.6 56.9 56.9 05:54 36367 10.0 flat 05:56 36368 2.0 arc 06:22 36369 1200.1 target 06:45 36370 1200.1 target 07:07 36371 1200.1 target 07:30 36372 1200.1 target 07:53 36373 1200.1 target 08:15 36374 1200.1 target 08:33 36375 911.6 target 08:36 36376 10.0 flat 08:38 36377 2.0 arc ----- sequence 36378, plate 2342 ------- 19.4 15.7 20.1 16.0 08:52 36378 10.0 flat 08:54 36379 2.0 arc 09:13 36380 900.1 target 09:26 36381 600.1 target 09:40 36382 720.1 target 09:44 36383 10.0 flat 09:46 36384 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:56Z 8 1512 -1.68 0.0002 57.21 0.0030 178.50 -0.0074 0.999810 05:03Z 2 1245 14.08 -0.0003 56.37 0.0055 191.75 0.0188 1.000270 06:47Z 6 2331 145.81 0.0020 61.46 0.0044 -53.31 -0.0186 1.000070 09:02Z 9 2342 64.51 -0.0039 78.49 0.0059 238.58 0.0428 1.000270 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:56Z 8 1512 0.99981 1876 2683 -30 -2 57.2 7.7 22 25 -- 1.3 05:03Z 2 1245 1.00027 -2666 -1045 0 14 56.4 8.2 16 23 -- 1.7 06:46Z 6 2331 1.00007 -691 547 -30 146 61.4 7.0 10 33 -- 1.7 09:02Z 9 2342 1.00027 -2666 -1177 -90 65 78.5 8.6 4 359 -- 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:27Z 46 4 5 42 (NE) 125 -
