APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday January 7, 2006 (MJD 53743) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Dan Long Night: John Barentine Jurek Krzesinski ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We tried to get signal on one plate, but clouds blocked all photons. We did dithered spectroscopic flats. No problems to report. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: Commish was found unresponsive this afternoon. It could be pinged but not logged into. A message was left for Fritz, so he may check in later. No other problems with the afternoon check. Spectrograph focus checked and adjusted for the slightly warmer conditions. Now set for around 5 C. As usual details in problem section. Cartridge 1 left mounted on telescope. Night: 00:56Z cart 8 plt 1640. Too bright to see the guide stars. Then we used fk5 star, which was quite off the fiber. Unfortunately clouds got denser and for safety we parked the telescope at stow position and closed the petals. Since clouds are to thinck to get any signal we started with a few shakup items. DITHERED FLATS (the telescope in the stow position, enclosure off): First attempt - failure after 5 flats. Errors are here: Finished with specFlat 5 of 15. Setting up Collimator 2006-01-08 07:51:29Z: Original command was !ma100! 2006-01-08 07:51:29Z: expected reply was !ma100 OK ! motor a: Mechanicals did not respond correctly; response was ma100 Error: problem with motors (see previous error message) Original motor positions: {a 7200} {b 7204} {c 7800} Current motor positions: {a 7300} {b 7204} {c 7800} The second attempt worked fine. We run early endNight. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5978 20:26Z 20:44Z 100 O 122.90 127.46 45 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 36385, plate -9999 ------- 20:27 36385 0.0 bias ----- sequence 36386, plate 1503 ------- 20:44 36386 10.0 flat 20:46 36387 2.0 arc 20:50 36388 2.1 arc 20:52 36389 2.1 arc ----- sequence 36393, plate 1640 ------- 07:35 36393 10.0 flat 07:39 36394 10.0 flat 07:42 36395 10.0 flat 07:46 36396 10.0 flat 07:50 36397 10.0 flat 07:59 36398 10.0 flat 08:04 36399 10.0 flat 08:08 36400 10.0 flat 08:11 36401 10.0 flat 08:15 36402 10.0 flat 08:19 36403 10.0 flat 08:23 36404 10.0 flat 08:27 36405 10.0 flat 08:32 36406 10.0 flat 08:36 36407 10.0 flat 08:40 36408 10.0 flat 08:43 36409 10.0 flat 08:47 36410 10.0 flat 08:51 36411 10.0 flat 08:55 36412 10.0 flat 08:59 36413 2.0 arc 09:01 36414 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:15Z 48 7 18 240 (WSW) 702 - Clear 20:45Z 49 7 19 251 (WSW) 636 - Clear 21:16Z 46 5 19 241 (WSW) 608 - Mostly Clear 00:20Z 41 0 20 262 (W) 353 - 00:50Z 41 0 24 269 (W) 413 - 01:21Z 41 0 19 266 (W) 529 - 01:53Z 42 1 26 279 (W) 542 - 02:25Z 42 0 21 282 (WNW) 545 - 02:57Z 42 1 14 271 (W) 544 - 03:30Z 42 2 20 271 (W) 578 - 04:02Z 42 5 6 273 (W) 639 - 04:34Z 42 7 12 265 (W) 667 - 05:06Z 42 7 17 273 (W) 812 - 05:38Z 41 7 12 262 (W) 842 - 06:11Z 42 8 9 265 (W) 885 - 06:43Z 41 8 9 253 (WSW) 796 - 07:15Z 41 8 9 259 (W) 865 - 07:47Z 41 8 12 265 (W) 1090 - 08:23Z 40 8 13 254 (WSW) 1050 - 08:55Z 40 8 13 264 (W) 1122 - 09:26Z 39 8 12 265 (W) 1034 - 09:58Z 39 8 19 262 (W) 1137 - 10:31Z 39 6 15 266 (W) 1090 - 11:04Z 38 4 19 283 (WNW) 1177 - 11:36Z 38 0 18 269 (W) 1012 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:15Z telescope opned fans on. Note: Best focus temperature can only reliably be determined by comparing against PSS temp using sp1. When the telescope has been at stow for an extended period (say all day), sp2 gets quite a bit colder (as much as 2 or 3 C) presumably due to the boil off of the camera dewars above the spectrograph body in this orientation. Note: When collimate is run in version v5_1_0 there is a warning message "speclog_version: Command not found." It doesn't appear to effect the calculations but is not seen in v4_10_7.
