APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday March 17, 2006 (MJD 53812) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Steph Snedden (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Spectro Monthly Checkout ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- All the usual checkout tasks done with no oddities to report. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- The day crew encountered some problems in collecting fiducial tables this morning. In addition to the usual two azimuth fiducials that give bad numbers each month (#3 and #27), two others misbehaved this morning (#5 and #29). The fiducial data taken for azimuth, therefore, may be no good, requiring new data to be taken. In the meantime, a problem with the MCP temporarily being unable to read the mcp_fiducials files kept the engineers from turning over the scope to me before Craig and Sir Robert could fix it. All was well by end of business today. We (Wendell and I) decided to build tables for the new data and compare it with the old to see if it ought to be implemented, particularly given that a new pointing model will be taken during shake. New Fiducial Data ----------------- Current az, alt fiducial tables were built on data from MJD 53752 (53753 for rot). Comparison with current data show: az: Old data are generally better and don't have as many gaps from bad fiducials. alt: Old data are considerably better than current. rot: Old data are only very slightly better than current. The plan is to not implement these results before tomorrow night, depending on whether the skies are clear enough to get a pointing model and on my recommendation regarding the data. Looks like we ought to keep the old fiducial tables for now. Wendell says he'll be happy to get new data for us if events warrant. The airTemp at the time was warm (by usual March standards) but expected lows in coming nights are ~2-3 degrees C cooler. Dithered spectro flats were taken (exp numbers 38012-38018). Next I took 25 biases (exp number 38021-38045) and examined bias frame 38021 in all four cameras. All looks well. When I tried to run apo_plotbias under IDLSPEC2D on SoS, I got this error: IDL 5.5a> apo_plotbias, 38021 % Compiled module: DJS_FILEPATH. % Compiled module: FILEPATH. % Compiled module: PATH_SEP. % Compiled module: HEADFITS. % Compiled module: FXPOSIT. % Compiled module: MRD_HREAD. % HEADFITS: ERROR - READU: End of file encountered. But trying the command a few more times finally caused it to start working. Weird. Hardcopies are in the Big Book O' Biases in the control room. In moving the telescope to remove the cartridge, I found myself in a situation where the brakes could not be released, yet no stop buttons were in. On Steph's advice, I checked the state of the brake handswitches in case the engineers had left them in "manual mode" (they had not). The MCP indicated the brakes still on both az and alt (i.e., an axis init in tcc or a clear_brake in MCP wasn't successful). I tried a move up to zenith and the telescope moved without an overcurrent on the alt motors, so we presumed the brake really had been cleared. We think it might be a bug in the new MCP version, not getting the axis brake status information correct. Mounted the devilishly infamous "Plate 666" and took three 900 s dark frames (exp numbers 38046-38048).
