APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday August 26, 2006 (MJD 53974) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Shannon Watters Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We imaged 82 N from lambda +117.5 to +140.1 (including ramps) and from lambda +162.6 to -171.3 (including ramps). We got about 100 frames of the oblique scan (301 O). We lost about 2.75 hours to high humidity and/or clouds. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- No problems to report. Night: ------ Not photometric so we begin with supernova imaging. We aborted the first run (6279) because we forgot to set inst = imager. Note that since inst = spectro, 6279 does not appear in the imaging summary. The rotator aborted (03:00Z) when we tried the next scan. The rotator aborted at about 56 degrees. It was headed to 122 degrees. An axis init cleared the problem. The second run (6280) took a long time to get into focus and so after we got into focus and checked the pointing, we ended the drift and started again. 03:19Z Run 6281: 82 N, start lambda +117.5. Good from the beginning. During this scan, we got the following warnings from watcher: azimuth (MGT: bad az amp (0 now 0) (2006-08-27 03:40:35Z sdssmcp): 2006-08-27 03:40:47Z ) and AxisStat:az (out_closed_loop amp_bad: 2006-08-27 03:41:50Z) tccMon showed the telescope to still be tracking but the mcp indicated that the az axis had aborted. The image quality still looked good on the scrolling displays and skippy said the pointing was still good, so we continued. Further monitoring of the pointing with skippy showed an increase in the nu and thetaf pointing errors. It appeared that there was indeed a problem with the telescope. However, we decided to continue the scan until either nu or thetaf exceeded their allowable limits. Nu reached 8" at about frame 78 (lambda +127.9). Although nu and thetaf were still in spec, around frame 185 we noticed that the number of stars found by skippy was way small. Further investigation showed that the pointing was no longer good and we terminated the scan at frame 190 (lambda +144.7). A close examination of the pointing for the entire run using skippy shows that this run is definitely good through frame 130 (lambda +135.7) and almost certainly good through frame 160 (lambda +140.1). After frame 160, the pointing is probably bad. After ending run 6281, we did an axis init and the az abort cleared. The sky was photometric and so we moved on to the oblique scan. 05:18Z Run 6282: 301 O, start mu 281. Seeing was good for the whole run (about 1"). Clouds came in around frame 109 (06:19Z) and we stopped this scan at frame 112. The tccMon said that this was at a mu of +300.6. However, we're not sure if tccmon is reliable for this stripe since we started the scan at mu = 281 and tccmon said mu = 289. Since skippy did not work at all on this stripe, we have no idea if the pointing was good. When the clouds came in we switched back to supernova imaging. 06:24Z Run 6283: 82 N, start lambda +162.6. Good from the beginning. We ended this run at 08:11Z, frame 182 (lambda -171.3) due to high humidity. All of this run was good. We closed around 08:20Z due to high humidity. While waiting for conditions to improve, we did an on-telescope bias (run 6284). The humidity improved very slightly but then clouds came in. The rest of the night was lost to high humidity and/or clouds. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6278 00:50Z 01:06Z 100 O 56.96 60.96 40 ignore doghouse 6279 inst = spectro ignore wrong inst 6280 03:06Z 03:17Z 82 N 115.29 117.93 32 ignore too long to focus 6281 03:19Z 05:10Z 82 N 117.30 144.97 198 science good to frame 160 6282 05:18Z 06:21Z 301 O 96.47 112.36 120 science good to frame 109 6283 06:26Z 08:34Z 82 N 162.42 -64.00 190 science all good 6284 08:41Z 09:00Z 100 O 174.89 -180.39 46 bias on-telescope ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- See the main log. ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6279 7 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 6280 18 4 17 -0.700 0.099 -4.000 0.072 0.00077 140 50 6281 14 4 71 -1.000 0.133 -4.200 0.138 0.00054 142 51 6281 66 4 128 -7.200 0.126 -6.800 0.180 -0.00123 142 51 6281 119 4 18 -20.000 1.091 -7.800 0.714 -0.06367 142 51 6281 171 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 6282 7 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 6282 58 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 6282 108 4 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 0.000 -0.00000 0 0 6283 12 4 65 -1.500 0.169 -1.500 0.151 0.00139 144 52 6283 62 4 40 -1.700 0.150 -1.100 0.114 0.00115 144 52 6283 112 4 41 -1.600 0.204 -1.000 0.145 0.00226 144 52 6283 165 4 57 -1.700 0.159 -0.100 0.163 0.00310 144 52 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 6281 23 1 51 38 54 -0.263 0.262 2.047 0.245 -0.00688 6281 23 1 51 38 66 -0.505 0.113 2.131 0.148 -0.00717 6281 23 1 51 38 76 -0.447 0.130 2.247 0.159 -0.00756 6281 23 1 51 38 80 -0.680 0.110 2.127 0.225 -0.00715 6281 23 1 51 38 70 -0.902 0.164 2.254 0.160 -0.00758 6281 41 1 51 38 64 -6.834 0.444 -2.246 0.182 0.00755 6281 41 1 51 38 79 -7.099 0.284 -2.059 0.192 0.00692 6281 41 1 51 38 72 -6.929 0.301 -1.998 0.163 0.00672 6281 41 1 51 38 68 -7.068 0.442 -2.011 0.264 0.00676 6281 41 1 51 38 63 -7.321 0.289 -1.887 0.257 0.00634 6281 77 1 51 38 57 -7.241 0.107 -2.357 0.115 0.00793 6281 77 1 51 38 76 -7.242 0.099 -2.093 0.181 0.00704 6281 77 1 51 38 70 -7.261 0.137 -2.052 0.173 0.00690 6281 77 1 51 38 67 -7.231 0.101 -2.149 0.140 0.00722 6281 77 1 51 38 65 -7.449 0.170 -2.089 0.219 0.00702 6281 94 1 51 38 57 -7.054 0.201 -2.026 0.126 0.00681 6281 94 1 51 38 56 -6.976 0.163 -1.883 0.171 0.00633 6281 94 1 51 38 69 -7.001 0.168 -1.721 0.173 0.00579 6281 94 1 51 38 53 -7.136 0.198 -1.679 0.152 0.00564 6281 94 1 51 38 52 -7.158 0.221 -1.755 0.228 0.00590 6281 128 1 51 38 59 -7.041 0.153 -0.085 0.152 0.00028 6281 128 1 51 38 49 -6.798 0.209 -0.095 0.329 0.00032 6281 128 1 51 38 45 -6.901 0.132 -0.018 0.185 0.00006 6281 128 1 51 38 42 -6.916 0.134 0.030 0.196 -0.00010 6281 128 1 51 38 46 -6.836 0.144 -0.142 0.189 0.00048 6281 146 1 51 38 59 -6.024 0.187 -0.197 0.228 0.00066 6281 146 1 51 38 47 -5.883 0.179 -0.469 0.174 0.00158 6281 146 1 51 38 55 -5.998 0.098 -0.336 0.154 0.00113 6281 146 1 51 38 45 -6.131 0.152 -0.126 0.146 0.00042 6281 146 1 51 38 44 -6.204 0.212 -0.086 0.324 0.00029 6281 179 1 51 38 28 -5.947 0.178 1.065 0.269 -0.00358 6281 179 1 51 38 46 -5.817 0.180 0.787 0.284 -0.00265 6281 179 1 51 38 32 -5.734 0.147 0.903 0.203 -0.00304 6281 179 1 51 38 36 -5.788 0.138 0.843 0.258 -0.00284 6281 179 1 51 38 24 -5.959 0.165 0.983 0.216 -0.00330 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): N/A UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 40490, plate -9999 ------- 00:22 40490 0.0 bias 00:52 40491 0.0 bias ----- sequence 40492, plate 2308 ------- 01:01 40492 10.0 flat 01:03 40493 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:52Z imager 38.27 -0.0003 50.79 0.0011 121.20 0.0000 1.000000 07:22Z imager 35.96 -0.0003 51.66 0.0011 119.41 0.0000 1.000000 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:53Z imager 1.00000 0 -369 -283 38 50.8 14.0 0 294 i'23 1.1" 07:21Z imager 1.00000 0 -386 -296 36 51.7 13.4 2 253 i'23 0.9" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:54Z 63 50 8 261 (W) 204 -
