APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday October 13, 2006 (MJD 54022) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Viktor Malanushenko Assistance: Stephanie Snedden Observer: Mike Harvanek and Elena Malanushenko ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ShakeDown & Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- It was clear at the beginning of the night, but strong clouds after midnight forced us to stop observations. We checked spectrograph and guider as part of Shake. Also we observed Supernova Strip 82 S with lambda=111.0 to +171.8. The stripe has been observed in variable weather conditions. We obtained one set of dithered flats. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Telescope has been checked. All systems work fine. Only the mcp says the sp2 door is closed when it is open. Spectro Collimation has been done and focusing on expected night temp.= +7.5 C PT is not ready for observations, so we cannot work with Segue. We verified that the PT FF lamp was changed (by Norm on Oct. 9th). Night: ------ Clear, photometric, T=10C, humidity 40%, wind 1 mph. We started night with spectroscopy to exercise spectrographs and guider with real observations. Cart 1, plate 2537, segue. Find stars on Go-to-field. 1:33 pre-calibration. We made several science exposures 1:40 (exp 900), 1:59 (600), 2:12 (700 with pause), 2:27(600). We did on-sky spectro testing with what we thought were real science exposures. However, as it turns out, the plate we were observing (2537) was already done but had not been declared done in the database. Thanks to Steph for discovering this. We declared this plate done in the database and requested the cartridge be replugged with a different plate. On the bright side, the spectrographs checked out okay and we obtained bonus signal on plate 2537, if anyone is interested. We tested the specMech code as follows. All headers (i.e., all 4 cameras) for the flat, arc and 4 science frames (40925-40930) for plate 2537 were examined. Two of these science frames were paused and their initial exposure times were altered (frame 40929's was changed from 900 to 700s; frame 40930's was changed from 300 to 600s). All headers were found to have the correct exposure times. Also, mechSend s commands were issued multiple times to both sp1 and sp2. The humidity reported by mechSend s was always zero. However, the temperatures reported by mechSend s were both reasonable and changing. So, except for the fact that the humidity always reads zero, the specMech code appears to be functioning properly. Switching to imaging. 03:05Z Run 6453. Stripe 82 S - supernova. Ramp lambda 111-115. Science started at lambda=115, frame 31. Skippy is happy from the beginning, in focus, seeing is good (~1.3-1.4"). Just after we started the clouds are increasing and by 3:30 it is partly cloudy. We still have good seeing and skippy is happy, so we continue to do the SN observations. 5:45 it is clear and photometric again. 6:15 - clouds again. We see strong radar return moving to us from south, clouds and no stars, so we close the dome at 07:10 but keep ventilation on. End Drift at lambda=171.8, frame 409. 07:25 Run 6454, 42 frames; bias on telescope. Switch to spectroscopy to continue shake down because of cloudy night. The Cart 3, plate 2442 is mounted. 8:58 Postcal 9:05 Dithered flats - specFlats15. The clouds are very strong and in addition the radar return are very scary, so at the point of no return we did endNight. endNight is completed. We did an auto-fill at the end of the night. A subsequent manual fill confirmed that the auto-fill had indeed filled the dewars. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6452 21:38Z 22:02Z 100 O 56.01 62.09 55 ignore 6453 03:06Z 07:08Z 82 S 111.55 172.03 417 science 6454 07:24Z 07:46Z 100 O -157.00 -151.48 51 bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6453 12 4 25 1.200 0.832 -0.300 0.472 0.01593 223 49 6453 64 4 107 2.500 0.144 -0.500 0.134 0.01253 223 49 6453 165 4 93 2.800 0.159 -0.900 0.118 0.01302 223 49 6453 217 4 59 2.500 0.165 -1.700 0.128 0.01309 223 49 6453 268 4 56 2.400 0.122 -1.600 0.145 0.01296 223 49 6453 318 4 38 2.600 0.195 -1.700 0.135 0.01323 223 49 6453 369 4 42 2.900 0.128 -1.800 0.124 0.01365 223 49 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 40914, plate 2537 ------- 21:48 40914 0.0 bias 22:03 40915 10.0 flat 22:05 40916 2.0 arc 22:21 40917 3.0 arc 22:23 40918 2.0 arc 22:50 40919 10.0 flat 22:52 40920 2.0 arc ----- sequence 40921, plate -9999 ------- 00:21 40921 0.0 bias ----- sequence 40922, plate 2537 ------- 01:03 40922 10.0 flat 01:05 40923 2.0 arc ----- sequence 40924, plate -9999 ------- 01:16 40924 0.0 bias ----- sequence 40925, plate 2537 ------- 01:36 40925 10.0 flat 01:38 40926 2.0 arc 01:57 40927 900.0 target 02:11 40928 601.0 target 02:26 40929 702.0 target 02:39 40930 602.0 target ----- sequence 40931, plate 2442 ------- 09:01 40931 10.0 flat post caqlibration 09:03 40932 2.0 arc 09:08 40933 10.0 flat specFlats 15 09:12 40934 10.0 flat 09:16 40935 10.0 flat 09:19 40936 10.0 flat 09:23 40937 10.0 flat 09:27 40938 10.0 flat 09:31 40939 10.0 flat 09:35 40940 10.0 flat 09:39 40941 10.0 flat 09:42 40942 10.0 flat 09:46 40943 10.0 flat 09:50 40944 10.0 flat 09:54 40945 10.0 flat 09:58 40946 10.0 flat 10:02 40947 10.0 flat 10:06 40948 2.0 arc 10:08 40949 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:33Z 1 2537 162.58 0.0012 48.71 0.0018 -45.78 -0.0232 1.000040 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:18Z 1 2537 1.00000 0 1188 0 161 47.7 10.2 0 324 -- 1.1 01:33Z 1 2537 1.00004 -395 808 -50 163 48.7 10.4 1 347 -- 1.1 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 20:57Z 55 30 6 276 (W) 226 - 21:28Z 54 28 8 301 (WNW) 246 - 22:01Z 58 33 2 265 (W) 253 - 22:32Z 56 30 5 278 (W) 271 - 23:05Z 54 30 6 293 (WNW) 219 - 23:37Z 53 31 2 303 (WNW) 245 - 00:09Z 53 30 6 255 (WSW) 282 - 00:41Z 50 28 0 8 (N) 300 - 01:20Z 50 27 0 1 (N) 299 - 01:51Z 49 27 1 305 (NW) 202 - 02:22Z 49 27 0 211 (SSW) 219 - 02:52Z 50 26 2 344 (NNW) 219 - 03:23Z 50 28 7 38 (NE) 255 - Clouds 03:54Z 50 31 3 301 (WNW) 221 - Clouds 04:47Z 51 31 4 286 (WNW) 224 - Clouds 05:17Z 51 31 1 311 (NW) 240 - Clouds 05:48Z 52 30 4 262 (W) 182 - 06:19Z 51 30 2 182 (S) 205 - Clouds 06:50Z 50 31 9 177 (S) 200 - 07:20Z 49 31 9 169 (S) 218 - Clouds 09:36Z 49 33 10 174 (S) 243 - Clouds 10:08Z 49 34 11 155 (SSE) 285 - Clouds 10:40Z 49 34 13 176 (S) 342 - Clouds 11:12Z 49 35 13 177 (S) 351 - Clouds ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:52Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:40 Enclosure is off. 07:10 Enclosure is on. 11:00 Ventilation is off.
