APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday November 4, 2006 (MJD 54044) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek ET: Jian Ge Justin Crepp Studying ET observations: Elena Malanushenko Visitors: French Leger Ruth Sabier ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Photometric most of the night (until around 10:30Z) with decent seeing. The very last part of the night (after 12:03Z) was lost to clouds. Observed ET plates 8032, 8028, 8030, 8032 (again), 8033 (piggy-back), 8031 and 8018. ET piggy-back observations were attempted. See the main log for details. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- 00:25Z Began ventilation. 00:30Z Removed the enclosure. 01:03Z ET plate 8032 (cartridge 8). Guide stars on the gotoField. Obtained one 50 minute exposure. 02:09Z ET plate 8028 (cartridge 4). Needed an FK5 to acquire the field. Obtained one 50 minute exposure. 03:15Z ET plate 8030 (cartridge 6). Needed an FK5 to acquire the field. Obtained two 50 minute exposures. 05:23Z ET plate 8032 (cartridge 8). Needed an FK5 to acquire the field. Obtained one 50 minute exposure. 06:31Z ET piggy-back plate 8033 (cartridge 1). Guide stars on the gotoField. The b2 & r2 wavemax values for the arc (frame 41226) are in the red. This is not a problem with the collimation but rather with the wavelength positioning. Since this is just a test plate and since we don't want to burn ET science time, no adjustment or correction was made. SoS did not reduce the science exposures in real time (for reasons unknown) so there was no feedback as to an appropriate exposure time. So, a range of exposure times from 600s to 1200s was used. See the Spectro Summary section for details. When SoS did finally reduce the science frames 4+ hours later (perhaps triggered by a spectro bias?), ALL the sky values for ALL the exposures were in the red. So, for future attempts, exposure times need to be substantially less than 600s. Two 50 minute ET exposures were obtained while attempting the piggy-back spectroscopy. 08:44Z ET plate 8031 (cartridge 7). Guide stars on the gotoField. Some ET fiber problems required us to stop tracking and then return to the field several times. There was no guide star in fiber 5 so it was disabled. The suggested scale change kept varying by about 0.01. I finally just picked a value and stayed with it. Not sure if it was the right value or not. Obtained a 50 minute and a 30 minute exposure. 10:44Z ET plate 8018 (cartridge 2). Needed an FK5 to acquire the field. The guider needed to be given a little help (+200 units in rotator) for it to acquire the last 5 guide stars. Obtained one 50 minute exposure. Clouds thickened and by 12:03Z we could no longer find guide stars. The clouds remained and prevented a final 50 minute exposure that had been planned. 12:40Z Enclosure on. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): frames 41225 - 41227 visually inspected UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 41223, plate -9999 ------- 00:01 41223 0.0 bias 00:22 41224 0.0 bias ----- sequence 41225, plate 8033 ------- 06:41 41225 10.0 flat 06:43 41226 2.0 arc b2 & r2 wavemax values in the red 07:02 41227 901.0 target SoS would not reduce in real time 07:15 41228 600.0 target SoS would not reduce in real time 07:38 41229 1200.0 target SoS would not reduce in real time 07:53 41230 750.0 target SoS would not reduce in real time 08:13 41231 1051.0 target SoS would not reduce in real time 08:26 41232 602.0 target SoS would not reduce in real time ----- sequence 41233, plate 8018 ------- 11:11 41233 0.0 bias 12:10 41234 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:25Z 8 8032 38.47 0.0016 72.98 0.0023 213.50 0.0084 1.000040 02:17Z 4 8028 236.84 -0.0010 51.56 0.0005 87.97 0.0084 1.000040 03:25Z 6 8030 26.81 0.0021 47.94 0.0011 202.35 0.0084 0.999820 04:34Z 6 8030 0.80 0.0021 51.44 0.0011 180.62 0.0084 0.999770 05:33Z 8 8032 273.81 -0.0006 42.64 0.0013 117.38 -0.0282 1.000020 06:50Z 1 8033 -28.57 0.0009 68.66 0.0028 155.51 -0.0018 1.000070 07:47Z 1 8033 -55.34 0.0009 60.51 0.0028 134.58 -0.0018 1.000070 09:29Z 7 8031 283.08 -0.0016 58.39 0.0021 118.52 -0.0184 0.999870 11:10Z 2 8018 197.25 0.0066 81.41 0.0009 19.29 0.0658 1.000280 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:26Z 8 8032 1.00004 -395 1000 200 38 73.0 7.3 7 195 ---- 1.3" 02:17Z 4 8028 1.00004 -395 973 125 237 51.6 7.2 14 232 ---- 1.4" 03:26Z 6 8030 0.99982 1778 2709 50 27 48.0 7.5 13 252 ---- 1.5" 04:34Z 6 8030 0.99977 2271 3106 50 1 51.4 7.4 14 246 ---- 1.5" 05:34Z 8 8032 1.00002 -198 1093 50 274 42.3 6.9 15 214 ---- 1.8" 06:50Z 1 8033 1.00007 -691 561 0 -29 68.6 6.6 8 235 ---- 1.2" 07:41Z 1 8033 1.00007 -691 577 0 -53 61.4 6.5 3 266 ---- 1.2" 09:30Z 7 8031 0.99987 1284 2269 50 283 58.3 6.8 12 290 ---- 1.4" 11:12Z 2 8018 1.00028-2765 -1196 -25 199 81.3 7.2 11 317 ---- 1.2" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:18Z 53 27 7 262 (W) 658 - 22:50Z 51 27 7 261 (W) 690 - 23:22Z 50 29 7 226 (SW) 785 - 23:55Z 46 31 8 215 (SW) 914 - 00:27Z 44 29 10 204 (SSW) 1059 - clear 00:59Z 44 29 12 230 (SW) 1226 - clear 01:31Z 45 29 10 237 (WSW) 1221 - clear 02:03Z 45 30 13 214 (SW) 1242 - clear 02:34Z 44 28 12 233 (SW) 1021 - clear 03:05Z 45 25 9 240 (WSW) 1068 - clear 03:36Z 45 23 12 235 (SW) 718 - clear 04:07Z 46 20 9 262 (W) 654 - clear 04:39Z 45 20 14 240 (WSW) 628 - clear 05:09Z 44 21 15 217 (SW) 655 - clear 05:40Z 44 23 12 235 (SW) 731 - clear 06:11Z 44 21 10 188 (S) 558 - clear 06:43Z 43 20 7 225 (SW) 571 - clear 07:16Z 44 19 4 261 (W) 508 - clear 07:46Z 43 17 8 263 (W) 546 - clear 08:17Z 42 19 6 264 (W) 508 - clear 08:48Z 43 20 10 270 (W) 548 - clear 09:20Z 43 22 11 284 (WNW) 623 - clear 09:52Z 45 24 14 278 (W) 667 - clear 10:25Z 44 24 12 309 (NW) 604 - clear 10:56Z 44 21 13 283 (WNW) 534 - light clouds 11:26Z 44 21 11 299 (WNW) 480 - partly cloudy 11:56Z 44 21 10 325 (NW) 469 - partly cloudy 12:27Z 43 23 3 15 (NNE) 594 - mostly cloudy 12:58Z 43 16 8 358 (NNW) 493 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:25Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:30Z Enclosure off. 12:40Z Enclosure on, doors closed, fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
