APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 10, 2006 (MJD 54080) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington (dayShift) Shannon Waters (Observer) Kaike Pan (Observer) VisitorS: Shi MuoMing Chen JianJun ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Most of the night was lost to high humidity and clouds. We open a few hours, and collected signals on plate 2636 ( got lowest S/N**2 of about 13), 2444 (lowest S/N**2 at 17.2). Problem: 1) SP1: We got watcher messages (4 times tonight) saying SP1 is not connected. But we were able to talk to the camera and got data. This happened two night ago too. 2) three problems for SOP guider display, are they related? a) on the SOP guider monitor (display), the gflats (from the first gotoField -gflat) are not in the centers of fibers, and the guider could not get stars to the corresponding fiber center on the display. But we think that gflats and stars are actually at centers of fibers. Display does not show their position properly (see log for cartridge 5). b) for all plats we observed tonight, fiber 11 does not have image on the display, but has flux and fwhm measurements which look real (they change with other fibers in a proper manner). c) For all plates we observed tonight, fiber 6 had fwhm measurements of 0.98 which is not really for most of time. But occasionally, it had true fwhm measurement. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- I had to reboot the photo crates; the error message is posted in the Problems Section. I noticed that the hatch door to the 2.5-meter's lower enclosure was difficult to close; it seemed to be sticking on the northeast corner. I also noticed that the 137-degree fiducial in Az does not always reading when the scope was slewed in a negative direction, e.g., 151 to 121 degrees. The slitHead door on sp1 had to be asked twice, via the mcpMenu, before it decided to open. When I clicked the sp1-door button the first time, I noticed that the mcpGui and the Instrument Latch Controller box both indicated that the sp1 door was open although it was not. The spectro focus/collimation was checked but not adjusted; the IDL results are posted in the Problems Section. The spectros are set for about 0-degrees C. Night: ----------- 02:45Z cart 1, plt 2636 (BAO TEST). FK5 used for the field. Shannon's SOP session hang on. He had to wait for it to time out. a few minutes were lost. 03:25Z too cloudy to get data with only about 5 mintues on the second exposure. The second exposure was definitely bad due to clouds, we aborted it without reading out. 04:25Z we got guiding stars back, so started another exposure. We acquired three good exposures on this plate with a total exposure time of 4200 s. The highest S/N**2 is 21.2 (on b2), lowest is 12.2 on r1. Two gflats were needed to center gflats and guiding stars to fiber centers on SOP GUI display. 06:05Z cart 3, plt 2444 (SEQUE faint). stars on GTF. Seeing went bad, to worse than 2.0". 07:24Z we got a watcher message saying sp1 was not connected. since we are still able to talk to the camera. we cleared the message and see if it will come back again. we acquired four 1200 s exposures on this plate, and got accumulated S/N**2 of 17.2, 20.7, 22.4, and 23.2 for b1, r1, b2, and r2 respectively. 08:05Z cart 5, plt 2570 (chuck). Stars on GTF. With a gotoField -gflat, we started guider and let run for a while, adusted scale, and let guider run for another two mintues or so. But the guider could not got most stars to the corresponding fiber centers. Then we stoped the guider and issued another "gotoField -gflat". After the gotoField finishing, gcam showed all guid stars were in the centers of their corresponding fibers without any adjustments. This indicated that guiding stars might actually be at fibers centers, But the SOP GUI monitor did not show their position properly. three minutes after we started the first exposure, clouds drifted in, we lost guiding stars. We waited for 10 min and checked the outside, sky was not clear, and huminity up to 77%, dewpoint split down to 3.0, we had a guest wind speed of 37 mph. So we decided to close. After we move enclosure back on, the wind speed up to 36 mph, guest to 38.8 mph. dewpoint split down to 2.6. 12:00Z endNight finished. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6623 21:55Z 22:52Z 100 O 117.56 131.72 109 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 41717, plate -9999 ------- 21:43 41717 0.0 bias ----- sequence 41718, plate 2325 ------- 23:03 41718 10.0 flat 23:05 41719 2.0 arc 23:10 41720 3.0 arc 23:13 41721 3.0 arc 00:16 41722 0.0 bias ----- sequence 41723, plate -9999 ------- 00:43 41723 0.0 bias ----- sequence 41724, plate 2325 ------- 02:42 41724 10.0 flat 02:44 41725 2.0 arc 02:48 41726 10.0 flat 02:50 41727 2.0 arc ----- sequence 41728, plate 2636 ------- 03:20 41728 10.0 flat 03:23 41729 2.0 arc 03:47 41730 1200.0 target ----- sequence 41728, plate 2636 ------- 20.0 12.2 21.2 16.4 05:18 41731 1200.0 target 05:51 41732 1803.0 target 05:54 41733 10.0 flat 05:56 41734 2.0 arc ----- sequence 41735, plate 2444 ------- 17.2 20.7 22.4 23.2 06:19 41735 10.0 flat 06:21 41736 2.0 arc 06:46 41737 1200.0 target 07:09 41738 1201.0 target 07:31 41739 1200.0 target 07:54 41740 1201.0 target ----- sequence 41741, plate 2570 ------- 08:15 41741 10.0 flat 08:18 41742 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:41Z 1 2636 12.13 0.0016 56.78 0.0030 190.14 -0.0066 1.000060 06:29Z 3 2444 271.17 -0.0010 62.58 0.0035 107.44 -0.0116 1.000240 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:12Z 9 0 1.00000 0 1247 0 121 30.0 -0.1 19 265 03:41Z 1 2636 1.00006 -593 945 275 12 56.8 -0.4 23 268 -- 1.60 06:29Z 3 2444 1.00024 -2370 -516 300 271 62.5 -2.8 16 275 -- 1.8 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:36Z 35 29 26 246 (WSW) 375 - cloudy 22:07Z 32 28 21 248 (WSW) 444 - 22:37Z 34 27 23 249 (WSW) 460 - 23:07Z 32 25 21 253 (WSW) 445 - 23:38Z 32 26 22 263 (W) 442 - 00:10Z 32 26 24 249 (WSW) 534 - 00:14Z 31 26 19 265 (W) 471 - 00:47Z 31 27 22 263 (W) 480 - 01:19Z 31 24 25 272 (W) 418 - 01:50Z 31 21 22 267 (W) 388 - 02:20Z 31 20 17 258 (WSW) 490 - cloudy 02:51Z 31 20 21 259 (W) 444 - partly cloudy 03:23Z 31 20 22 250 (WSW) 438 - mostly clear 03:56Z 30 20 22 259 (W) 564 - cloudy 04:28Z 30 19 26 268 (W) 991 - mostly clear 05:00Z 30 18 29 269 (W) 1598 - mostly clear 05:31Z 28 18 22 274 (W) 1712 - mostly clear 06:04Z 27 18 23 268 (W) 787 - mostly clear 06:34Z 26 19 19 269 (W) 707 - mostly clear 07:05Z 26 20 24 281 (W) 647 - mostly clear 07:36Z 25 17 14 278 (W) 707 - partly cloudy 08:06Z 25 19 15 262 (W) 770 - partly cloudy 08:37Z 25 20 22 269 (W) 782 - cloudy 09:10Z 25 21 30 280 (W) 803 - 09:42Z 24 21 18 280 (W) 778 - 10:15Z 23 21 22 264 (W) 731 - 10:46Z 23 21 22 264 (W) 722 - 11:18Z 22 21 21 270 (W) 803 - 11:50Z 22 22 23 277 (W) 6780 - cloudy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:55Z Fans on, louvers, doors open.
