APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday March 27, 2007 (MJD 54187) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Mike Harvanek Suvrath Mahadevan Justin Crepp Steph Snedden (support) Dan Long (support - by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 7 exposures on 5 ET plates: 8024 (50 minutes), 8025 (50 minutes), 8026 (2 x 50 minutes, 50 minutes), 8021 (50 minutes), 8022 (50 minutes). The test iop (v4_32_0) was used tonight. See the main log for details. Two hours of on-sky time were lost due to a software problem with the guider or its display. host2 was rebooted in an attempt to solve the problem but this didn't do the trick. The work around is to use startMon -simple. See the main log for details. There was a fair amount of cloud cover most of the night but the ET guys said the data were probably useful. The seeing was 2" or worse for the last 2+ hours of the night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 23:45Z Ventilation started. No problems to report. Night: ------ 01:30Z Enclosure off. 02:15Z (approximately) Plate 8016, cartridge 6: Guide stars on the gotoField. The guider would not function. It would take one image which would be displayed in SAOimage and then stop. No guider info was displayed in either the sop window or on the SAOimage overlay. When SAOimage was initially brought up with startMon an error message scrolled by in the sop window. Please see the Problems section for details. I exited and restarted my sop session but this did nothing. I consulted with Steph who was on site and she suggested opening a sop session on another computer. This did nothing as well. Steph and I rebooted the guider mac but again, nothing. We called Dan Long and after some investigation, we discovered the guider would run with "startMon -simple" but not with "startMon". Although we now had a work-around it was decided that a reboot of host2 was needed to fix the problem. According to Steph, host2 had lots of shared memory segments (14) and semaphore arrays (11) and 4 of those arrays had 17 semaphores each. (Steph will add a host2 reboot to the shakeup task list so that it can be done each month before the start of ET.) 03:22Z We rebooted host2 and proceeded to set up everything again. However, when starting up SAOimage from sop using startMon, we got the exact same error message that occurred previously and the exact same problem with the guider. At this point, I decided to use the startMon -simple work-around. Tomorrow night we will run the current iop (rather than the test iop we are running tonight) to see if this could be the problem. However, there was no such problem running the test iop last night. Perhaps someone could spot the problem and/or suggest another course of action after looking at the error message in the Problems section. Not sure if this is a clue or just a symptom of the problem but the pgplot window that contains some of the guider info (x, y, phi, scale, FWHM) would not come up while this problem was occurring. Anyway, we lost 2 hours of on-sky time to this problem and no exposures were obtained for this plate. 03:58Z Plate 8024, cartridge 3: Guide stars on the gotoField. One 50 minute exposure obtained. 05:09Z Plate 8025, cartridge 5: Guide stars on the gotoField. One 50 minute exposure obtained. 06:21Z Plate 8026, cartridge 1: An FK5 was needed to acquire the field. Two 50 minute exposures obtained. 08:34Z Plate 8021, cartridge 8: Guide stars on the gotoField. One 50 minute exposure obtained. 09:45Z Plate 8022, cartridge 7: Guide stars on the gotoField. One 50 minute exposure obtained. 10:55Z Plate 8026, cartridge 1: An FK5 was needed to acquire the field (again). One 50 minute exposure obtained. The new iop (v4_32_0) was tested to see if the spectro guider offset between the fiber images and the overlay in SAODisplay has been fixed. The results from tonight are as follows: cartridge 6 - somewhat offset to the right cartridge 3 - fairly well centered cartridge 5 - fairly well centered cartridge 1 - way offset to the bottom cartridge 8 - fairly well centered cartridge 7 - well centered cartridge 1 - way offset to the bottom (again) Note that the guider seemed to work properly using the single gflat exposure even for the cartridges where the fiber images were not closely aligned with the overlay. Perhaps there is no need for a second gflat but more testing is needed. 12:10Z Enclosure on. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): YES QA Procedures Done (y/n): N/A UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 43918, plate -9999 ------- 00:33 43914 0.0 bias 01:02 43915 0.0 bias 02:25 43916 0.0 bias 02:34 43917 0.0 bias 03:34 43918 0.0 bias 03:45 43919 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:13Z 3 8024 34.05 0.0003 72.85 0.0025 209.67 0.0212 1.000160 05:22Z 5 8025 30.76 -0.0014 56.27 0.0018 205.43 -0.0188 1.000160 06:35Z 1 8026 146.90 0.0031 62.51 0.0012 -50.81 -0.0145 1.000160 08:46Z 8 8021 86.02 0.0011 64.92 0.0023 251.32 -0.0037 1.000160 10:11Z 7 8022 118.62 0.0040 76.39 0.0025 -70.39 -0.0017 1.000160 11:09Z 1 8026 222.51 0.0003 52.97 -0.0003 73.36 -0.0149 1.000160 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:12Z 3 8024 1.00016 -1580 -281 -100 35 72.8 9.2 28 196 ---- 1.2" 05:22Z 5 8025 1.00016 -1580 -145 0 31 56.3 8.5 22 196 ---- 1.3" 06:35Z 1 8026 1.00016 -1580 -61 100 147 62.5 7.6 23 196 ---- 1.6" 08:45Z 8 8021 1.00016 -1580 -67 100 86 64.8 6.3 32 201 ---- 1.6" 10:11Z 7 8022 1.00016 -1580 -86 100 119 76.4 5.4 28 208 ---- 2.0" 11:08Z 1 8026 1.00016 -1580 -36 100 222 53.1 4.6 19 189 ---- 2.7" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- The first few hours of weather info were lost because I failed to reload the log immediately after the host2 reboot.
