APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday January 1, 2008 (MJD 54467) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Oravetz Steph Snedden ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Clouds! And a little science. Plate 2864 was declared done. Useful signal was obtained on plates 2866, 1631 and 2852. New nominal MIG values were saved. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- afternoon: --------- The 92 and 110 degree az fidcials only read in th increasing az direction. The 45 deg alt fiducial did not read in the increasing alt direction. Spectro focus was checked and left unchanged (set for approx. -4 C). The cloud camera was calling the sky photometric when there was an obvious band of cirrus at an altitude > 30 degrees. It appears that the camera gain may need a tweak. The outside manipulator arm Logic Controller is still bypassed. No other problems noted. Night: ----- 00:30Z - We set up for spectroscopy on Cartridge 9, plate 2864 - SEGUE faint We needed an FK5 in twilight to find the field. This plate has one 1000 s exposure and one 1200 s exposure. We noticed a bit belatedly that WSIGMA was out of spec on the first exposure, so consider it a slightly out-of-focus bonus exposure. The focus was adjusted for a temp of 0 C before the second exposure was taken. Combined with previous exposures, this plate is done. 02:23Z - Cartridge 1, plate 2866 - SEGUE faint FK5 was at the edge of fiber 10 Clouds increased during the time we observed this plate, hampering efficiency. We took four exposures totaling 5100s, but only the first three exposures gave good signal. This plate is not done yet. 04:22Z - Cartridge 2, plate 1631 - photoz We tried getting useful signal, but the clouds didn't cooperate at first. We obtained one useful exposure during a sucker hole. This plate is not yet done. 06:28Z - We waited to see if the clouds would thin. Note that vs+ went out of spec on CCD 55 again, as the temperature dropped. 07:38Z - Cartridge 8, Plate 2852 - SEGUE Bright During a sucker hole we took pre-cals and one exposure. The seeing was over 3 asec FWHM, and we couldn't get decent signal in a 25 minute exposure. We persevered, and eventually got one 25 minute exposure that had (S/N)^2 in b > 2. The plate is not done. 10:13Z - Cartridge 6, plate 2872 - SEGUE faint FK5 was found through the clouds, but the guide stars were too faint and the efficiency too low for us to obtain decent signal. We waited. 12:03Z - It's hopeless. We closed. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 22:54 48520 3.0 arc Hartmann exposure 22:57 48521 3.0 arc " " ----- sequence 48522, plate -9999 ------- 23:11 48522 0.0 bias ----- sequence 48522, plate 2864 ------- 01:00 48523 10.0 flat 01:03 48524 2.0 arc 01:12 48525 10.0 flat 01:15 48526 2.0 arc 01:39 48527 1001.0 target 01:46 48528 10.0 flat 01:49 48529 2.0 arc 02:13 48530 1202.0 target ----- sequence 48531, plate 2866 ------- 02:29 48531 10.0 flat 02:32 48532 2.0 arc 02:56 48533 1200.0 target 03:19 48534 1200.0 target 03:47 48535 1501.0 target 04:11 48536 1200.0 target 04:14 48537 10.0 flat 04:17 48538 2.0 arc ----- sequence 48539, plate 1631 ------- 04:33 48539 10.0 flat 04:35 48540 2.0 arc 05:05 48541 1500.0 target 05:32 48542 1501.0 target 05:47 48543 10.0 flat 05:49 48544 2.0 arc 06:18 48545 1500.0 target 06:22 48546 10.0 flat 06:24 48547 2.0 arc ----- sequence 48548, plate 2852 ------- 07:40 48548 10.0 flat 07:43 48549 2.0 arc 08:19 48550 1501.0 target 08:46 48551 1501.0 target 09:14 48552 1500.0 target 09:18 48553 10.0 flat 09:20 48554 2.0 arc ----- sequence 48555, plate 2872 ------- 10:14 48555 10.0 flat 10:16 48556 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:21Z 9 2864 4.66 0.0043 47.43 0.0027 183.98 0.0333 0.999970 01:54Z 9 2864 -7.44 0.0043 47.27 0.0027 173.66 0.0333 0.999970 02:35Z 1 2866 -7.59 0.0077 57.03 0.0039 173.62 0.0211 1.000070 04:39Z 2 1631 -15.25 0.0040 49.64 0.0040 167.15 0.0140 1.000070 07:57Z 8 2852 52.41 0.0059 43.39 0.0017 221.78 0.0140 1.000100 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:21Z 9 2864 0.99997 296 1435 0 5 47.4 2.3 6 347 -- 1.2 01:54Z 9 2864 0.99997 296 1435 0 -7 47.3 2.3 7 350 -- 1.2 02:34Z 1 2866 1.00007 -691 588 0 -7 57.1 3.0 4 359 -- 1.4 04:39Z 2 1631 1.00007 -691 560 -50 -15 49.6 4.0 2 188 -- 1.6 07:57Z 8 2852 1.00010 -988 487 100 52 43.4 -1.7 8 140 -- >3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:55Z 36 -11 0 280 (W) 617 - partly cloudy 23:26Z 37 -11 2 356 (NNW) 261 - ' 23:58Z 37 -11 7 327 (NNW) 250 - ' 00:31Z 35 -12 5 314 (NW) 266 - ' 01:03Z 37 -11 6 338 (NNW) 263 - ' 01:34Z 35 -13 5 12 (NNE) 236 - ' 02:05Z 36 -12 6 350 (NNW) 243 - ' 02:36Z 36 -11 3 353 (NNW) 239 - ' 03:06Z 37 -11 2 3 (N) 295 - ' 03:36Z 37 -10 6 5 (N) 185 - mostly cloudy 04:07Z 38 -10 0 233 (SW) 218 - ' 04:37Z 39 -10 1 185 (S) 218 - ' 05:08Z 38 -10 1 128 (SE) 175 - ' 05:39Z 36 -12 1 149 (SSE) 218 - ' 06:10Z 30 -15 8 116 (ESE) 391 - ' 06:41Z 30 -14 6 145 (SE) 419 - ' 07:11Z 31 -13 4 119 (ESE) 410 - ' 07:44Z 29 -9 10 113 (ESE) 468 - ' 08:14Z 29 -7 6 165 (SSE) 499 - ' 08:45Z 28 -2 6 116 (ESE) 525 - ' 09:16Z 26 -1 9 115 (ESE) 531 - ' 09:49Z 30 -4 19 121 (ESE) 547 - ' 10:20Z 31 -9 11 126 (SE) 467 - ' 10:53Z 31 -12 17 142 (SE) 416 - ' 11:25Z 29 -5 17 151 (SSE) 518 - ' 11:57Z 30 -7 18 138 (SE) 470 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 23:27Z - Opened doors, started ventilation. 00:20Z - Opened enclosure 12:03Z - Closed enclosure.
