APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday January 7, 2009 (MJD 54839) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Audrey Simmons Steph Snedden Kaike Pan (swing) JiWei Xue (UF) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Observed and got data on five MARVELS survey fields, but clouds affected data early, and poor seeing toward and through second half. Two more MARVELS plates were tried, but no guide stars were found. One SEGUE plate exposure was taken at the end of the night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- All system were checked and working properly. Because no MARVELS pre-selection or SEGUE plate will be observed, I did not check spectro focus. A bias frame was taken, and normal. The spectro focus should still set for - 3 C. Night: ------ 00:15Z Opened enclosure. Cartridge 4, plate 3075 - MARVELS survey ---------------------------------------- 00:52Z - Used an FK5 in bright twilight to get the field. 01:08Z Clouds forming. Efficiency down, seeing about 2 asec fwhm now. One 50-minute exposure. 01:51Z - Clouds clearing a bit. The guider efficiency went up, but the instrument flux was still low. Turns out the connector was on the wrong side - a miscommunication. 02:14Z Cartridge 7, plate 3084 field A - MARVELS Survey ------------------------------------------------------- GSOGTF - barely. They were on the fiber edge. Efficiency about 30 percent - clouds. One 50-minute exposure. 03:14Z Cartridge 7, plate 3084 field B - MARVELS Survey -------------------------------------------------------- GSOGTF One 50-minute exposure in partly cloudy skies. 04:25Z Cartridge 3, plate 3077 field A - MARVELS survey ------------------------------------------------------- No guide stars, but an educated guess brought them into the fibers Two 25-minute exposures in partly cloudy skies. 04:55Z - id4 threw an error message while the imager and DA were doing nothing. Details in problems section. 05:45Z Cartridge 9, plate 3078 field A - MARVELS Survey ------------------------------------------------------- GSOGTF One fifty-minute exposure in clear skies but poor seeing (about 2 asec FWHM). 06:55Z Cartridge 9, plate 3078 field B - MARVELS Survey ------------------------------------------------------- GSOGTF One fifty-minute exposure in clear skies and variable seeing. Wind started to climb. We waited with the petals closed for about 10 minutes and the wind went down closer to 35 mph. 08:25Z Cartridge 6, plate 3090 field A - MARVELS Survey ------------------------------------------------------- No guide stars, no FK5. We tried spiralPatterns in different fibers, we tried old offsets for this field plus spiralPatterns. We tried going to the B field and couldn't find guide stars there either. We occasionally saw random stars in a fiber, so we know the guider was working. All the fiducial crossings were made during the slews to both fields. We tried mounting and unmounting the cartridge in case there was some odd tilt from poor latching. We then checked the mirror numbers to see if we had a stuck actuator that caused a tilt. At this point, it was time to move on to the next cartridge. 10:16Z - Cartridge 1, plate 3091 field A - MARVELS Survey --------------------------------------------------------- Again, no guide stars. We went to the nearest FK5 and found a star, but it was too faint to be an FK5. We centered on it anyway, went back to the field, and no guide stars. We were grasping at straws at this point. We did more spiralPatterns, a soft reboot of the MCP and rechecked the fiducial crossing errors. Still no guide stars. We checked the TCC clock and it was giving correct LST, so that wasn't the problem either. 3.3 hours lost trying to get data on these plates. There was really only one thing left to do and that was to check the pointing with our late-night known good SEGUE plate that was still plugged. 11:44Z - Cartridge 8, plate 3178 - SEGUE2 ----------------------------------------- Guide stars on goToField. Guess that rules out telescope pointing problems and indicates the problems with 3090 and 3091 are in the design or the plugMap files. The Moon had just set, MARVELS had no other available plates, so we took one half-hour exposures on this plate, after adjusting the spectro focus for 7 degrees warmer temperatures than expected. The signal on this plate is: --------------------------------------------------- MJD b1 r1 b2 r2 Texp Sum --------------------------------------------------- 54835 2.0 1.3 2.4 1.8 1800.0 7.5 54835 14.6 9.5 15.4 12.5 1801.0 52.0 54836 2.5 2.3 3.2 3.3 1800.0 11.3 54836 4.9 3.3 5.6 4.8 1800.0 18.6 54836 6.2 3.4 6.6 4.6 1800.0 20.8 54836 2.0 1.3 2.0 1.8 1800.0 7.1 54839 4.7 4.8 5.3 4.9 1801.0 19.7 Total: 36.9 25.9 40.5 33.7 12602.0 --> 137.0 Total when ALL b,r values > 2.0: 32.9 23.3 36.1 30.1 9002.0 --> 122.4 (limit=156.5) ------------------------------------- Not quite done. endNight finished but complained about the missing files from the bias taken during the DA problems. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7894 22:47Z 23:04Z 100 O 158.66 162.92 42 ignore 7895 04:58Z 05:53Z 100 O -108.38 -94.67 102 ignore 7896 06:01Z 06:14Z 100 O -92.67 -89.29 35 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 57965, plate -9999 ------- 22:53 57965 0.0 bias ----- sequence 57966, plate -9999 ------- 23:55 57966 0.0 bias 23:59 57967 0.0 bias ----- sequence 57968, plate -9999 ------- 11:19 57968 0.0 bias ----- sequence 57969, plate 3178 ------- 11:19 57969 10.0 flat 12:07 57970 11.0 ignore 12:11 57971 10.0 flat 12:13 57972 2.0 arc 12:47 57973 1801.0 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:52Z 4 3075 -16.27 0.0022 77.22 -0.0002 165.43 0.0401 0.999900 02:16Z 7 3084 246.72 -0.0037 48.32 -0.0015 98.21 0.0039 0.999870 03:21Z 7 3084 257.96 -0.0035 50.56 -0.0012 104.22 0.0035 0.999890 04:34Z 3 3077 201.94 -0.0031 45.43 -0.0030 60.96 0.0250 1.000040 05:53Z 9 3078 198.72 -0.0014 43.73 -0.0031 59.71 0.0261 0.999900 07:03Z 9 3078 164.13 -0.0010 59.45 -0.0045 -28.53 0.0148 0.999970 12:22Z 8 3178 286.04 -0.0029 56.36 0.0017 121.42 0.0055 1.000080 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:52Z 4 3075 0.99990 986 2018 80 -16 77.2 2.7 5 345 1.7" 02:16Z 7 3084 0.99987 1283 2328 80 247 48.3 2.7 12 340 1.8 03:21Z 7 3084 0.99989 1085 2158 80 258 50.6 2.4 13 355 1.4 04:34Z 3 3077 1.00004 -394 949 80 202 45.4 3.8 19 7 1.4 05:53Z 9 3078 0.99990 986 2020 0 199 43.7 3.7 28 20 2.2 07:03Z 9 3078 0.99997 296 1399 0 164 59.5 5.1 27 21 1.5 12:22Z 8 3178 1.00008 -789 458 -50 286 56.4 6.8 19 23 2.4 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:00Z 37 11 21 20 (NNE) 83 - partly cloudy 22:32Z 37 12 8 358 (NNW) 94 - ' 23:04Z 37 13 21 19 (NNE) 98 - ' 23:36Z 37 13 6 350 (NNW) 98 - ' 00:08Z 36 13 17 333 (NNW) 96 - ' 00:38Z 36 12 5 359 (NNW) 106 - ' 01:09Z 36 11 19 351 (NNW) 124 - ' 01:39Z 35 12 15 357 (NNW) 127 - ' 02:09Z 36 11 21 347 (NNW) 114 - ' 02:41Z 36 11 13 314 (NW) 103 - ' 03:13Z 36 11 12 3 (N) 112 - ' 03:45Z 36 11 12 6 (N) 134 - ' 04:17Z 36 11 19 27 (NNE) 156 - ' 04:48Z 38 8 20 4 (N) 112 - ' 05:20Z 38 9 23 26 (NNE) 224 - mostly claer 05:53Z 38 12 21 29 (NNE) 92 - ' 06:25Z 41 11 22 25 (NNE) 70 - clear 06:57Z 41 10 28 20 (NNE) 47 - ' 07:29Z 42 12 26 7 (N) 99 - ' 08:00Z 39 12 33 18 (NNE) 83 - ' 08:31Z 40 15 27 13 (NNE) 64 - ' 09:03Z 40 15 30 17 (NNE) 45 - ' 09:35Z 40 14 31 22 (NNE) 35 - ' 10:05Z 42 13 30 20 (NNE) 57 - ' 10:35Z 42 15 25 18 (NNE) 46 - ' 11:07Z 44 14 8 25 (NNE) 40 - ' 11:39Z 44 12 11 20 (NNE) 34 - ' 12:12Z 42 14 13 5 (N) 47 - 12:43Z 43 14 12 41 (NE) 20 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:15Z - Opened enclosure 13:00Z - Closed enclosure.
