APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday September 1, 2009 (MJD 55076) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan Dmitry Bizyaev Paul Harding (guider magician) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Finish the guider and test on sky. Do a pointing model. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Lava lamp is returned back to the control room. Paul HArding fixed a bug in a python guider module. It shows good signs of working and will be honestly tested tomorrow evening (with a Marvels plate drilled for the evening time). Attempt to do a pointing model-72 is made. Failed in the morning. "Chiller pressure" gauge at down E side of the telescope is lower than usual. We leave the sp-dewar low (after the morning succesful fill). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- afternoon checkout ran fine. 01:00Z started ventilation, doors and louvers opened. Cart. 1 is mounted Delayed in opening because of clouds around with possible rain. Night: ------ 02:00Z telescope opened. 05:02Z power failure, generator starts on, but we didn't switched off commercial power. Paul Harding making a progress with guider. Basic commands work, and telescope can be pointing to guide stars. Then it didn't want to guide properly. We found suspicious place it the code and Paul made a quick fix. Briefly, transformation formula do not rotate the field uniformly, and rather wrecks it. With the fix, it behaves correctly. Briefly, there is a mess with many rotation angles in the code, but unclear where exactly. Any way, now the guider guides with disabled rotation adjustement. Rotation of the field is still creates problems because we test it on a Marvels plate drilled for a very different angles (i.e. scale misalignment is unfixable now). Tomorrow evening it should work fine. 08:00Z Paul is done with cart. 1. He would want cart. 11 to be plugged, but since guider fibers were wrongly mapped, Paul needs manually "remap" the guide fibers with flashlight. He release telescope and let us to do pointing model. Seeing is about 1.8",accidental clouds, moderate humidity, more than two hours till twilight, so we switch to do the pointing model. 08:25Z we attempt to home/relax mirrors before the pointing model. After issuing the relax command for the primary mirror, we don't see mesages about the relaxing finished. It looks like is is doing the relaxing very slow, it took many minutes to complete cycle 1. From third attempt, it become working with normal speed. Secondary relaxed with its normal speed. Mounted ing. camera. Started pointing model. After star 56 telescope lost stars. We found that fiducials are a problem. Most probably the secondary mirror got stuck because its mirror numbers are way different from what it was in the beginning. We decide not to write this pointing model. 11:55Z closed enclosure. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- 01:46Z 59 41 13 148 (SSE) 1072 - 02:18Z 58 40 13 154 (SSE) 1110 - 02:50Z 58 38 15 155 (SSE) 1110 - 03:23Z 57 39 14 147 (SSE) 1036 - 03:55Z 58 39 15 136 (SE) 996 - 04:27Z 57 37 17 134 (SE) 965 - 04:59Z 57 36 17 143 (SE) 1020 - 05:31Z 57 34 15 132 (SE) 1033 - 06:03Z 56 34 17 135 (SE) 1045 - 06:36Z 55 34 15 130 (SE) 959 - 07:08Z 54 38 15 132 (SE) 995 - 07:40Z 54 38 14 160 (SSE) 929 - 08:12Z 54 37 9 169 (S) 980 - 08:44Z 54 38 4 166 (SSE) 964 - 09:16Z 54 38 6 180 (S) 930 - 09:49Z 53 38 6 186 (S) 918 - 10:21Z 53 38 4 187 (S) 796 - 10:53Z 54 38 4 191 (S) 834 - 11:25Z 54 57 0 208 (SSW) 905 - 11:57Z 54 38 2 298 (WNW) 863 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:00Z - Began ventilation.
