APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday September 8, 2009 (MJD 55083) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Observers: Howard Brewington Steph Snedden Paul Harding (remote) Demitri Muna (remotely talking to Paul) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Guider and spectrograph commissioning ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We worked on spectrograph collimation while skies were cloudy, and on the guider when we were able to open. Collimation: We improved the spectro collimation, but ask Kyle to read the notes in the log body about the scatter in the collimate results. We did not get to the other tests that he requested. Some notes about the TUI log: 1) We get a message in the TUI log when a flat exposure is finished, but not when an arc is finished. That info would be nice to have. 2) It would be VERY useful to have the exposure number echoed to the log when an exposure finishes. A note about the fits headers: The Hartmann arcs appear exactly the same as an ordinary arc. The fits headers have no Hartmann shutter information and the exposure time is the same as an ordinary arc. We need to be able to distinguish between these two types of arc! Also, do you want the exposure time for a Hartmann arc to be a little longer? Guider; We were using an old untransformed plug map file on cartridge 11, so the guider did not work right away, as some guide fibers were incorrectly assigned. Once the plugMap file was corrected, Paul got some info on the guide fiber angles. We are still missing the alt fiducial crossing at 45 degrees. We sometimes miss the 60 degree crossing. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- 23:00Z Started the afternoon checkout 23;10Z Restarted the servers 23:30Z Started the imager bias and noticed that the monitor for ad-1 was unhappy. Jon B helped me swap-in one of the spectro monitors. Night: ------ Clouds and nearby thunderstorms at sunset. We mounted cartridge 1 for guider tests, then removed it and mounted cartridge 11 for spectro tests when we saw we would not open soon. Spectro Collimation Test: ------------------------- BOSS cartridge 11 First, we took a short sequence of flats and arcs in the out-of-focus collimator positions, as a baseline: Frame Flavor expTime ----- ----- ------- 100864 bias 0 100865 flat 1 oops. Wrong cartridge. Don't use this one 100866 flat 1 Cartridge 11 - correct 100867 flat 2 100868 flat 4 100869 flat 8 100870 flat 16 100871 flat 32 100872 flat 64 100873 arc 1 100874 arc 2 100875 arc 4 100876 arc 8 100877 arc 16 The Collimate Procedure: ----------------------- BOSS cartridge 11 Although skies were clearing we had rain and lightning nearby, so we started spectro collimation. The collimator motor positions at the start: r1 r2 a= 0 10125 b= 0 10197 c= 0 10180 The first Hartmann exposures (we used the default exposure times): Frame Shutter expTime ----- ------- ------- 100878 out 1 100879 left in 1 100880 right in 1 Based on the "collimate" output on sos3, we pistoned r1 2000 and r2 -6500. It asked for adjustments of b1=-9.6 deg and b2=-40.4 deg. The blue focus rings were left alone for now. New positions: r1 r2 a= 1972 3625 b= 2043 3699 c= 1998 3680 ==================================== The second set of Hartmann frames: Frame Shutter expTime ----- ------- ------- 100881 out 1 100882 left in 1 100883 right in 1 Based on the "collimate" output on sos3 we pistoned r1 by 500 r2 by 1000. Collimate asked for adjustments of b1=-18.6 deg and b2=-6.9 deg. We did not make the adjustments yet. New positions: r1 r2 a= 2468 4626 b= 2500 4701 c= 2499 4680 ===================================== The third set of Hartmann frames: Frame Shutter expTime ----- ------- ------- 100884 out 1 100885 left in 1 100886 right in 1 Collimate then asked for pistons on r1 and r2 of 0, 142, and we called that converged. It asked for adjustments of b1=-19.6 deg and b2=-10.6 deg. We then started a series of flats before we remembered we had to re-adjust b1 and b2 and run collimate again. During this sequence of flats, we got a critical alert: Critical boss.heartbeat The boss ICC's been dead for at least 643s It also complained of noack. We did a boss iack and some boss pings to make sure all was well again. The pings were fine, but the clearExposure didn't work, so we continued to follow the troubleshooting procedure and used stageManager to restart the BOSS ICC. Then all was well. Okay, back to the collimation. The blue rings were adjusted by b1=-20 deg and b2 by -10 deg. ====================================== The fourth set of hartmann frames: Frame Shutter expTime ----- ------- ------- 100906 out 1 100907 left in 1 100908 right in 1 Collimate asked for changes of r1=-1000, r2=900, b1=-50deg, b2=-25 deg. These values make no sense to us, since the red cameras were not changed and the blue focus is worse. We tried moving the blue foci by b1=+40 deg (to end up at a net +20 deg) and b2=+20 to end up at a net +10 deg, then reran collimate: ====================================== The fifth set of hartmann frames: Frame Shutter expTime ----- ------- ------- 100909 out 1 100910 left in 1 100911 right in 1 Collimate asked for changes of r1=-200, r2=1000, b1=15 deg, b2=7 deg. So we suspect there may be a sign error for the recommended blue focus adjustment. At this point, we called Kyle to discuss the results, but got voice mail. We left a message. We then decided to investigate the scatter in these values. We made NO adjustments to either b or r and took more hartmann frames. ======================================= The sixth set of hartmann frames: Frame Shutter expTime ----- ------- ------- 100912 out 1 100913 left in 1 100914 right in 1 Collimate recommended changes of r1=-1200, r2=450, b1=16.5deg, b2=7deg. So without changing anything, the r collimate results varied considerably. For better statistics, we took another sequence without adjusting anything: ======================================= The seventh set of hartmann frames: Frame Shutter expTime ----- ------- ------- 100915 out 1 100916 left in 1 100917 right in 1 Collimate requested r1=-1660, r2=830, b1=15deg, b2=6.5deg. So the r values are still bouncing around. We decided to try raising the exposure time to 2 seconds, still without making any focus adjustments. ======================================= The eighth set of hartmann frames: Frame Shutter expTime ----- ------- ------- 100918 out 2 100919 left in 2 100920 right in 2 Collimate requested r1=-1450 , r2=1030 , b1=15.3 deg, b2=6.4deg. So, Kyle, that should give you an idea of the repeatibility of the collimate routine. =========================================================================== 07:05Z - Started ventilating 07:58Z - The last nearby threatening cell started breaking up, so we started an LN2 fill in the enclosure. The clouds hadn't moved in by the end of the fill, so we opened. *** Guider Tests: *** The loadCartridge results: 08:10:56 APO.snedden 36 guider i cartridgeLoaded=5,3511,A,54663,1 We found a guide star in fiber 3 at the same place as last night. We centered it, focused and started the guider. The star moved off to the edge of the fiber. Paul determined the guide fiber numbers were not matched to the right fiber assignations in the plugMap file, and the correct pluMap file was not on the mountain. He edited the plugMap file, and we tried guiding again. Unfortunately, the error vectors were still somewhat random. We made a few more offsets in az and alt so Paul could measure the fiber angles. 11:39Z - Closed enclosure endNight finished ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8025 23:23Z 23:55Z 100 O 48.14 56.21 67 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:43Z 62 44 4 247 (WSW) 448 - Mostly cloudy 00:15Z 61 45 5 263 (W) 536 - ' 00:51Z 57 46 4 260 (W) 620 - ' 01:23Z 56 46 1 232 (SW) 664 - ' 01:56Z 55 45 2 234 (SW) 620 - ' 02:28Z 56 45 4 196 (SSW) 652 - ' 03:00Z 56 45 4 201 (SSW) 842 - ' 03:32Z 57 40 3 273 (W) 723 - ' 04:04Z 55 44 5 265 (W) 744 - ' 04:36Z 53 43 1 359 (NNW) 744 - ' 05:09Z 53 44 4 358 (NNW) 776 - partly cloudy 05:41Z 54 44 6 331 (NNW) 643 - ' 06:13Z 53 44 6 18 (NNE) 743 - ' 06:45Z 53 43 6 7 (N) 754 - ' 07:17Z 54 43 6 359 (NNW) 702 - ' 07:49Z 54 43 6 350 (NNW) 703 - ' 08:21Z 52 43 1 335 (NNW) 892 - ' 08:54Z 52 42 4 0 (N) 732 - mostly clear 09:26Z 53 41 5 330 (NNW) 605 - ' 09:58Z 51 42 7 1 (N) 614 - ' 10:30Z 53 43 3 354 (NNW) 660 - ' 11:02Z 53 42 7 2 (N) 595 - ' 11:34Z 54 40 7 356 (NNW) 541 - ' ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 07:05ZZ Doors and louvers opened, fans on. 07:58ZZ Enclosure off. 11:39ZZ Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans off.
