APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday September 14, 2010 (MJD 55454) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Alaina Shelden Kaike Pan Support: Steph Snedden Dan Long (via phone) Craig Loomis (online) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- MARVELS until 05:44 (3.2 h), then BOSS (5.7 h) ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We had some clouds at the first half of the night. 3 hours was lost to high humidity in the second half. 40 minutes was lost to op-software. We observed: Three Marvels plates: cart 4, plate 4100B. Possible broken fiber: 31/32. Cart 5, plate 3519A. Three BOSS plates: cart 10, plate 4205. DONE. cart 14, plate 4225. cart 16, plate 4238. Problems: 1) The cartridge bat door could not open. It turned out that a hook on a compressed air pipe (that travlled 7-8 inches from its bracket) catched a braided cable on the door (see afternoon checkout section). The pipe needs to be better fix at its bracket. 2) It seems that the middle holder spot (where cartridge 4 is currently set) in middle rack of the cartridge bay is somewhat tight, it is little hard to get and put back cartridge there. Please check. Thanks. 3) gcamera disconnected itself once. After gcamera was restarted, guider images were not processed. Restarted guider, loadCartridge, took dark, gflat did not help. Craig helped to fix the problem but not quite sure what caused the problem. 40 minutes was lost. 4) Cart 16 has guiding problems again (see log). We recalled that we did have some guiding issues on this cartridge a few nights ago. It is worthy a double check. Afternoon: --------- All actors, systems are checked. BOSS bias, dark, and calibs were taken, and SoS3 reduction works okay. We had a problem with outside cartridge bay door. It opened to about 2/3, and stopped there. We noticed that at the time, motor was still running, but could not pull the door up. It looked like there was a physical catch. We stop the motor, lower the door, tried again. It stopped at the same spot. Then, we went into the plugging lab, opened the inside door, tried to found if there was something catch the door. We don't found anything obviously catching the door. Dan Long was called, and he let us push the door to see if we can open it. Push did not work. But our further investigation found that it was the compressed air pipe catched the door. One compressed sir pipe on southwest side escaped from its bracket and moved about 7-8 inches, reach the door. A hook on a T-shaped valve of the pipe catched a braided cable on the door, and got very tighted there. We had to use tools to get it out there. After getting it out, door can be opened and closed normally. But it is not enough for another MARVELS plate, we decided to switch to BOSS. 05:12Z cart 10, plate 4205. SOGTF. During the setup, gcamera disconnected itself. Restarted gcamera, but guider still does not work, took one image but guider GUI did not updated. Take gflat and dark did not help. gcamera and guider were restarted from stageManager three times, each time we started a process from loadCartridge, takedark, gflat. But guider took images, did not process them, so guider GUI did not show these images. Craig was online to help (thanks). Craig fixed the problem but not quite sure what caused the problem. 40 minutes lost to the problem. 06:00Z started sciences exposures. Mostly clear sky with decent seeing (0.6-0.8" by DIMM, 1.1-1.4" by guider). The plate was DONE with 5 15-min exposures. SOGTF. 07:50Z started science exposure. Clear sky with good seeing (1.1-1.3" by guider). But humidity is climbing: At 80%. We got one exposure on this plate, had to close for humidity. 08:07Z enclosure on. Fans off, doors and louvers closed. 10:30Z humidity 81% with dew point diff at 3.2 C. We decided to have another shot. Enclosure off. 10:48Z cart 16, plate 4238. SOGTF. FWHM measurements on guiding stars jumped around, and suggested scale changes jumped around too. We had to disable fiber 6, 9, 16 to get reasonable stable measurements. But these three fibers are not on the same side of the field. We checked guider image, we saw some elongated images, but not obvious dounuts. SoS reported S/N seems fine, we also checked S/N distribution across the plate, it is fine too. We recalled we had some guiding issue on this cartridg. We think it worthy a check. as soon as we started the 2nd exposure, humindity went up, the dew point difference was at 2.8. Plus this plate has expired 25 min ago, we decided to abort the 2nd exposure, close for high humidity. 11:32Z enclosure on. 11:40Z endNight finished. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DA TA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 00:52Z 60 49 2 240 (WSW) 499 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:10Z: started ventilation.
