Afternoon tasks: ---------------- The DA checked out fine, but we have used the same tapes for several nights now. If there was much of a chance for imaging tonight, I would have changed them for fresh tapes. I suggest we switch to new tapes tomorrow. Imager, spectrographs and engineering camera all checked out okay. Arc & flat field lamps okay. PT: biases, dome flats done. Night log: ---------- We did not get on the sky. Rain nearby at sunset followed by inclement weather on site kept us closed until about 02:35, when we tried to open under a clearing sky. However, while filling the spectro dewars after opening, the dewpoint once again dropped below 3C, so we closed immediately. Minor dampness was detected on a few surfaces, but quickly evaporated inside the enclosure. We were interviewed and filmed by a reporter from Channel 7 TV News in Albuquerque, in connection with the observations of the Gunn-Peterson effect in the z=6.28 quasar spectrum in particular, and the SDSS in general. We worked on getting a good set-up on the 'cinerama' 4-monitor observers' workstation (a.k.a. landru) to good effect. Landru will certainly make the driver's job easier when we do, eventually, get on the sky. Eric also proceded with installation of the SDSS software products on landru, as we hope to run at least watcher, astrotools and astrom on that machine. We had one unexpected logout of the observer's session on landru, which we think we traced to an 'autologout' event in the parent shell - users should put "unset autologout" in their .cshrc files.
