APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday September 15, 2001 (MJD 52168) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta Kleinman Scot Kleinman Mike Harvanek (swing) Visitors: Jurek Krzesinski Bill Boroski Eric Neilsen ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Lots of clouds and rain. We got 1 plate (665) finished and one exposure on plate 372, the photoz plate. Bill wrote lots of policy! endNight failed in an ugly way which we worked around. We cut a new test version of IOP with this workaround checked in. Observers- please run this and declare it current if endNight works tomorrow. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Gourmet night. vsw- volt error for ccd03 around 21:53. It started to clear around midnight. We started the fans on and waited to make sure we were safe to open -- radar showed a storm in the west developing and coming towards us faster than we liked. Around 1:30, the clouds starting to come in........ 2:30 We decided we can open. While opening the enclosure, we heard a loud scratching noise. The new west-north seal was brushing against the rail and was tearing the paint off. Scot adjusted the seal slightly by loosening the allen screws which hold it onto the building. This provided enough flexure so it didn't scrape against the rail any longer. We still get the secondary Galil errors: 0 I Received=''?GOCORR one or more axes did not end on a full step 0, 0, 0, 0, 1'' 0 0 W Text=''failed to adjust collimation and focus'' We noticed a few things about the watcher that we did not expect. It now tells us the instrument and plate (or so it tries) mounted. This is a nice feature, but we were not told if this change. Also, when loading the system status panel, we got an error, although it did sort of still come up. A PR was filed with the full error message which is also in the Problems section. We also noticed the normal interlocks panel showed RED for alt and az although we were tracking fine. In each case, the interlocks tree showed bad axis_mtr[12]_perm tracing down to the ff_man_cont_on bit. (What is this bit!?) We filed a PR on this as well. Right in the middle of guiding while setting up on our first plate (cart 4, plate 665), the guide stars went away. We then found somehow our offsets had disappeared! (Note, we did require the ~15''E offset we have been needing.) Looking through the murmur log, we found we had accidentally hit the clearOffsets button in the SOPGUI, so chalk this one up to operator error. We finished this plate in 3 exposures and went on to cart 3, plate 672, our only end of night plate, a photoz plate. We got only one exposure on this plate and a smear before twilight came in force. endNight decided to be nostalgic and not run tonight. It was a real PITA. The error message was: sp1> endNight -doSpectro -doTpm Error: expected integer but got "" ftclParseArg: Invalid integer value USAGE: endNight [mjd] [oldMjd] -gangCheck -frameCheck -parseMurmur -framelogFix -shiptape -ioptape -copy -mailSum -doSpectro -doImager -doSpectro -doTpm -goodRuns -skipOldLogs -test -help sp1> tb expected integer but got "" ftclParseArg: Invalid integer value USAGE: endNight [mjd] [oldMjd] -gangCheck -frameCheck -parseMurmur -framelogFix -shiptape -ioptape -copy -mailSum -doSpectro -doImager -doSpectro -doTpm -goodRuns -skipOldLogs -test -help while executing "shTclParseArg $args $opts endNight" invoked from within "if {[shTclParseArg $args $opts endNight] == 0} { return "error" }" (procedure "endNight" line 37) invoked from within "endNight -doSpectro -doTpm" After a bit of struggle, we found the problem was with the call to: [MJDOfMostRecentLogsOnDiskBefore [mjd4Gang]] which was the problem since it was returning "" instead of an integer which was expected. So, we got rid of the call and set oldMjd to 0, but this didn't work and it told us to use -skipOldLogs which we did, but that still didn't work. Why? -skipOldLogs sets the wrong variable. So, we made it set the right one and endNight proceeded quite far, but did eventually fail at ioptape, presumably because it was looking for the old variable to be set this time. Sigh. We tried again, setting oldMjd to default to [mjd4Gang] and ran without the -skipOldLogs option. We note that we did clean out the disks today, so this may be the first time endNight was run in this situation. This worked. Since Eric is in transit today, we went ahead and checked in this workaround on the branch and built a new version of IOP, v3_56_8 and installed it. This version is declared test and should be run tomorrow. Please declare it current if endNight works. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 Cart 4 plate 665 ----- sequence 10913, plate 665 ------- 01:14 10913 0.0 bias {{}} 09:22 10914 10.0 flat pre-flat 09:24 10915 2.0 arc pre-arc 09:55 10916 901.0 target science 10:13 10917 901.0 target science 10:37 10919 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} Cart 3 plate 672 ----- sequence 10920, plate 672 ------- 10:57 10920 10.0 flat pre-flat 10:59 10921 2.0 arc pre-arc 11:21 10922 900.0 target science 11:28 10923 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument getclock Az Alt Rot Scale ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:43 4:665 1000633410 0.005446 0.001124 0.010668 0.999910 05:07 3:372 1000638472 0.006738 -0.000772 0.010668 1.000000 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4412 Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:42 4:665 0.99991 888 1774 -150 -10 47.6 11.5 6 187 gdr 1.6 05:05 3:672 1.00000 0 1111 -50 -12 56.7 10.5 6 214 gdr 1.9 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 19:10 54 46 11 66 (ENE) 141 - 19:42 53 43 10 77 (ENE) 143 - 20:14 50 50 9 345 (NNW) 359 - 20:45 49 46 16 67 (ENE) 257 - 21:16 48 45 19 69 (ENE) 226 - 21:46 50 44 16 65 (ENE) 145 - 22:19 50 44 15 74 (ENE) 157 - 22:51 52 41 15 66 (ENE) 139 - 23:23 53 41 2 82 (E) 134 - 23:55 54 40 2 204 (SSW) 67 - 00:27 54 40 5 200 (SSW) 67 - 01:00 54 40 2 123 (ESE) 64 - 01:32 54 40 5 119 (ESE) 85 - 02:04 54 40 7 219 (SW) 84 - 02:36 53 40 7 199 (SSW) 63 - 03:08 52 41 6 184 (S) 100 - 03:50 52 42 4 196 (SSW) 90 - 04:21 52 42 6 190 (S) 81 - 04:53 51 42 4 184 (S) 83 - 05:25 50 43 8 238 (WSW) 103 - 05:56 50 44 5 210 (SSW) 92 - 06:27 52 46 5 271 (W) 123 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Locked down with cart 3, plate 672 mounted.
