APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 24, 2001 (MJD 52177) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Observers: Dan Long Atsuko Kleinman Swing: Mike Harvanek Support: French Leger Scot Kleinman Pete Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! Imaging when moon and weather conditions allow, otherwise spectroscopy. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished 4 plates tonight ( 679, 657, 660, 707 ). Exposed on a 5th plate but did not finish it ( 640 ). Trouble with flat field screens delayed start until about half hour after twilight. One axis halt due to delayed response in mcp- tcc communications. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- It was a fairly productive night tonight despite a couple of problems. It was clear all night with mediocre seeing. The first plate of the night ( 640 ) didn't get very much signal on it. The seeing wasn't great, but the bright moon really hurt us. There was also a little delay getting started. We had trouble getting the flat field screens to work. It was traced to the contoller itself. French came out and replaced two relays and we were back in business by half an hour after twilight. See problem section for details. During our first science exposure the telescope stopped tracking. This was due to the problem where the TCC expects some response from the mcp regarding an axis move and doesn't get it ( or at least not in time ). This was the only time it happened tonight. Unfortunately it resulted in the loss of that science exposure. See problem section for excerpts. The rest of the night was smooth sailing. We finished four plates in nearly the canonical time. Three exposures, but mostly 20 minutes in length due to moonlight and/or seeing. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Stripe Flavor Lambda Last Begin End Frame Comments ------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot --------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 23:48 11038 0.0 bias {{}} 00:26 11039 0.0 bias {{}} ----- sequence 11040, plate 640 ------- 2.6 9.5 5.7 12.0 03:04 11040 10.0 flat pre-flat 03:06 11041 2.0 arc pre-arc 03:54 11042 900.0 target science science 04:17 11043 1202.0 target science 04:51 11044 1801.0 target science 04:58 11045 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} 05:01 11046 10.0 flat post-flat 05:03 11047 2.0 arc post-arc ----- sequence 11048, plate 679 ------- 20.2 17.9 19.8 14.8 05:31 11048 10.0 flat science pre-flat 05:33 11049 2.0 arc pre-arc 05:57 11050 1200.0 target science 06:10 11051 602.0 target science 06:17 11052 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} ----- sequence 11053, plate 657 ------- 22.0 15.5 18.6 21.8 06:38 11053 10.0 flat pre-flat 06:41 11054 2.0 arc pre-arc 07:05 11055 1200.0 target science 07:27 11056 1201.0 target science 07:57 11057 1201.0 target science 08:04 11058 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} ----- sequence 11059, plate 660 ------- 9.1 8.1 7.4 8.4 08:27 11059 10.0 flat pre-flat 08:29 11060 2.0 arc pre-arc 08:55 11061 1200.0 target science 09:18 11062 1201.0 target science 09:40 11063 1200.0 target science 09:47 11064 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} ----- sequence 11065, plate 707 ------- 23.8 22.3 19.5 22.7 10:06 11065 10.0 flat pre-flat 10:08 11066 2.0 arc pre-arc 10:34 11067 1200.0 target science 10:56 11068 1201.0 target science 11:20 11069 1200.0 target science 11:27 11070 240.0 smear {{Smear Pattern}} ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- getclock Axis position and calibration offset Scale Time Ct Plate time Az El Rot Factor ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 21:23 2 640 1001388321 17.02 .0060 48.59 .0000 194.35 .0011 0.999820 23:30 9 679 1001395829 13.61 .0061 56.43 -.0012 191.36 .0124 1.000030 00:44 6 657 1001400276 14.48 .0068 46.26 -.0008 192.27 .0074 0.999760 02:34 7 660 1001406861 -13.39 .0054 46.54 .0013 168.47 -.0172 0.999800 04:21 3 707 1001413294 -22.27 .0062 55.14 .0004 161.33 .0278 0.999880 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- sidereal time Plate Telescope Tele - Plate '' Time Ct Plate deg RA Dec RA Dec RA Dec 21:23 2 640 310 321.2328 -7.2436 321.2366 -7.2426 13.7 3.6 23:30 9 679 340 348.8427 -0.0231 348.8463 -0.0235 13.0 -1.4 00:44 6 657 0 13.5570 -9.8741 13.5619 -9.8735 17.6 2.1 02:34 7 660 25 19.2419 -9.7653 19.2458 -9.7645 14.0 2.9 04:21 3 707 55 41.6582 -0.0182 41.6617 -0.0190 12.6 -2.9 ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL4488 Stays: JL4489 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 21:23 2 640 0.99982 1776 2558 -100 18 48.3 10.7 0 307 - 1.5 22:07 2 640 0.99978 2171 2879 -100 2 50.0 8.9 7 114 - 2.2 22:42 2 640 0.99978 2171 2881 -100 -12 49.3 9.7 7 46 - 2.2 23:29 9 679 1.00003 -295 767 -150 15 56.3 9.3 7 19 - 2.0 00:45 6 657 0.99976 2369 3008 -150 19 45.4 10.2 10 33 - 2.0 02:34 7 660 0.99980 1974 2626 -200 -11 46.8 9.9 11 24 - 2.0 03:28 7 660 0.99980 1974 2640 -200 -29 42.9 9.3 10 29 - 1.9 04:20 3 707 0.99988 1184 1996 -150 -21 55.3 9.4 9 36 - 2.3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 16:50 57 45 2 253 (WSW) 355 - Clear 17:22 57 43 4 259 (W) 359 - Clear 17:54 53 43 0 268 (W) 413 - Clear 18:26 53 43 0 225 (SW) 352 - Clear 18:58 52 43 4 177 (S) 408 - Clear 19:30 51 42 8 182 (S) 396 - Clear 20:02 50 39 5 179 (S) 415 - Clear 20:34 50 38 5 132 (SE) 473 - Clear 21:07 50 38 0 131 (SE) 491 - Clear 21:39 51 40 0 340 (NNW) 445 - Clear 22:12 47 39 6 107 (ESE) 469 - Clear 22:42 49 40 6 45 (NE) 427 - Clear 23:13 48 41 7 9 (N) 451 - Clear 23:43 49 42 9 9 (N) 407 - Clear 00:13 49 41 12 27 (NNE) 399 - Clear 00:45 50 41 13 36 (NE) 441 - Clear 01:17 49 41 8 33 (NNE) 380 - Clear 01:50 49 40 10 36 (NE) 393 - Clear 02:22 50 38 4 30 (NNE) 386 - Clear 02:54 49 39 7 25 (NNE) 400 - Clear 03:24 48 37 9 20 (NNE) 430 - Clear 03:54 48 37 9 40 (NE) 375 - Clear 04:25 49 34 8 33 (NNE) 377 - Clear 04:55 48 34 9 42 (NE) 386 - Clear 05:27 47 36 9 35 (NE) 418 - Clear 05:59 48 32 9 47 (NE) 340 - Clear 06:32 47 32 9 57 (ENE) 344 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 17:50 Doors opened, fans on 18:55 Enclosure opened 05:45 Enclosure closed, fans off. A check of the cables showed everything connected properly. We tried the manual control, and it wouldn't work either. At about 19:30 we called French and told him what was going on. He suggested checking the fuses, so we brought the telescope down to 6 degrees, and started to pull open one of the petals. It pulled back! There was power to the petals, so a fuse wasn't the problem. At this point ( ~19:45 ) French decided to come out to the site. He got here and came up to the telescope relays in hand, and swapped out the relays in the FF controller box. This fixed the problem and we were on the sky by 20:55 ( after having to top off the spectrographs again ).
