APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday January 7, 2002 (MJD 52282) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Steph "just drink it" Snedden Scot "we'll discuss it at the phoneCon" Kleinman Pete "I actually use hotbot" Newman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We got our astrometric calibration scan and started a science scan, but seeing was pretty bad, so we went to spectroscopy, finishing 4 plates: 769, 770, 328, and 518 and getting some data on plate 571. SoS never finished reducing the last r2 exposure on plate 328, but we've assumed it will be OK and will be enough to finish the plate (call it an educated guess). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- The start of the night was not photometric so we could not do imaging. We could also not do any of the available plugged plates because they actually require photometric skies, too. So, we sat around and made up silly sayings. We also decided we could make some marginal use of the time available by getting an imager bias and an astrometric calibration scan. Besides, maybe the cirrus would go away. We discovered tonight that the current watcher was built also on the old astrotools, v4_12. We built a new watcher based on CVS v2_13_2 and declared it current as v2_13_2a. We then built a new IOP v3_64_3c based on CVS v3_64_3 and on the new watcher. We also built a new tccMon v1_7a based on CVS v1_7. All were declared current. (This had no effect on the critical high tccmon bug we filed earlier.) I tried to build a similar new watcher on 'commish, but the newer astrotools isn't even installed there and a upd install there ran into trouble - I am seeking higher help. We started our astrometric calibration scan at a lamdbda=-182. We ended this drift at frame 126, now both the cloud camera and hoggPT telling us there are no longer clouds (although the first few data points in hoggPT look a bit low and with larger scatter than normal, perhaps). We then went to stripe 82N, startLambda -166. Skippy and the focusLoop looked good from the start of the scan. (Although nuErr started out at ~-12".) We accidentally stopped this run (an errant couple of up arrows and a return...) at frame 78. We cleared our calib offsets (left over from last night- the casue of the nuErr?) and started a new drift at lambda=-157. Sigh. Clearing the calib offsets did indeed improve the nuErr (now starting out at -3.3) although at the expense of the rotator error (still well-acceptable, though). skippy and focus were good at the start of this run. Seeing became unacceptable around frame 80. We stopped the run to go to imaging at frame 133. We switched to spectroscopy and started with cartridge 7, plate 769. As NOT expected, we actually found guide stars. Hooray! Two things different tonight: 1) there is a new plateMap 2) Steph noted the az position of this plate at this time of night is 135deg. Tonight, we did not cross an az fiducial during the slew to the field. We did slew the telescope by hand though and found an OK fiducial crossing before our gotoField. Did we need this last two times? I don't think so, but cannot prove it just yet. By this time, seeing was pretty atrocious (reports of 3" at the 3.5m). We nonetheless finished this plate in only three exposures! (Of 1500, 1800, and 1800s, though!:>) Next up: cart 2 plate 770. We found 2 guide blobs on the gotoField. Coming down from instChange, we had what looks like a bogus "too large to correct" alt fiducial crossing. See the Problems section. We finished plate 770 and went to cartridge 6, plate 328 and found 2 guider stars (10 & 11) on the gotoField. Next up: cart 8 plate 571. We found guideStars in 7 fibers on the gotoField. We probably won't have time to finish this plate, but if we went straight to our end of night plate, we would have time left over at the end, so we decided to spend an hour on this plate first and get what we can. Last plate: cart 5 plate 518. Steph's guiderMon stoped updating, so she had to exit it, drop the instruments, start a new guiderMon and reGrab the instruments. When she started the new guiderMon, she got an error that star 3 won't fit withina 450x450 region, scaled 150. So, she reverted to a startMon -simple and got a few guide stars on the gotoField.
