APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday March 20, 2003 (MJD 52719) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing : Atsuko Nitta Night : Pete Newman Steph Snedden Eric Neilsen (by phone) Softwaring and Phoneconing: Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown - night 1. If conditions permit, equatorial binned scans will supercede shakedown tasks. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- In-enclosure shake items worked on. Note there are many nice new features in the test version of watcher (v2_22_0) that observers might want to read about in the log section. checkBias, checkLED, biasGen, biasCheck, several PRs addressed. All on-sky shakedown tasks still need to be done. One new PR on IOP/endNight. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ========== Tape drives cleaned. New fiducial table v1_4. The AZ data taken this morning showed 6 fiducials were not reading the positions. French and Wendell were notified and they fixed this. AZ and ROT data looked similar to the current fiducial tables. So they were not updated. The new ALT data looked better than the old one, so I updated it. The new fiducial version is v1_4. Spectro Monthly Checkout part2: o SP2 was adjusted as recommended by collimate. The detailed output is in the PROBLEM section. o Dithered flats taken. Before running collimate, I used "postCalib" to get a set of flat and arc. I could not get a flat exposure due to the following message. Since it was a one-time thing (the second postCalib worked fine) I did not file a PR. We started with in-enclosure shake items. The clouds persisted all night, with only a few sucker holes. We worked on all the shake tasks that could be done in the enclosure. No equatorial binned drifts...sorry guys. ----- Watcher ----- Robert made many nice & useful changes to the test version of watcher: Watcher v2_22_0 contains some nice changes to the user interface that should reduce the number of unimportant messages and increase the importance of "beeps". Most of the following applies to the sections of the "System Details" window that pop up when the buttons on the main "SDSS Monitor" window are clicked. 1. More of the sections have a "Clear" button, e.g. Weather and QA, that lets you clear all the errors in one go. 2. Middle-click on the section head will bring up a question: "Should errors cause beeps whenever they occur, or should only new ones beep?" with a check box to let you decide. There is a corresponding default value for all sections called "always_ring_bell" that you can set through the "configure" option off the "client" pull-down menu on the main Watcher window. 3. Some TCC errors are no longer sticky, in particular, the errors triggered during instChange (out_closed_loop amp_bad and friends). When the axes abort because the altitude pin or a stop button is pushed in, the TCC flag turns on in watcher, when you axis init again, the flag clears itself. ===== IOP/SOP ===== Eric's IOP/SOP command logging in murmur log: --------------------------------------------- We sourced murmurCommands.tcl and started getting "time is -1" in the IOP session. It turns out the wrong murmurCommands.tcl got checked in. We sourced the correct version in Eric's usrdevel directory, and tested it, with Eric remotely monitoring the commands sent to the murmur log. The logging worked as Eric intended for an hour or so, but the SOP session that started the command logging eventually lost its connection to the TCC. An IOP session that was also running command logging did NOT lose its TCC connection. Details follow directly. Pete started his SOP session with a TCC connection, but some time after sourcing the murmurCommand.tcl script, he noticed complaints from the instrument handlers that there was no TCC connection. It launched 4 displays, but it displayed r1 twice and r2 twice, and did not display the b chips at all. Eric will look at the code tomorrow. We also tested the -debias option. It appears that the overscan region for r1 and r2 is being read at least approximately correctly, since the resulting images have values close to zero. There were no negative values, though, which we would expect from the shot noise. We think we might be missing some info about the shot noise. PR 4984 - There should be no wrapper around stopfillseq: -------------------------------------------------------- To test this we issued the following info command: im> info command stopf* im> Since nothing was returned, we considered the test successful, and PR 4984 was closed. It was later reopened, since there may be other 'dangerous' commands that should not have wrappers. PR 1206 - Modify questions for imaging runs in endDrift: -------------------------------------------------------- We ran a bias drift, and called it science *at the end* of the drift, but not at the beginning. No extra questions were asked. We then ran another bias drift, calling it 'science' from the beginning of the drift. No extra questions were asked. The PR was left open. Details of the IOP output for both cases follow: First, a run where we changed flavor at the end of the drift. PR 1710 - endNight fails when comments contain a double quote: -------------------------------------------------------------- We put a double quote in the comments field of run 3797. At the end of the night, we ran endNight, answering 'n' to the tape shipping option, and waited for run 3797 to be archived. Unfortunately, endNight failed on this run for a different reason (we think --- see the previous PR), so we will have to re-test this PR tomorrow night. We filed a new PR for the failure we encountered, which follows. New PR 5008 - makeRunLog and endNight bomb on overly short imaging runs with --------------------------------------------------------------------------- flavor science -------------- we made an imaging run of just 17 frame (run 3797, MJD 52719) that caused errors in makeRunLog and endNight. The latter is serious, but as this situation is very unusual, we could live with a work-round, e.g. to change the flavor of a completed run to "ignore". Note that this run was testing PR1710, so it did have a double quote " character in it's one-line description, but we don't think that was the cause of the failure. If it was, this PR is a duplicate of 1710. Below is what makeRunLog and endNight had to say just as they failed: makeRunLog: makeRunLog failed for run 3797. I have the following diagnostics plus check the murmur log and your screen history: Failed to read desired columns from /astrolog/52719/idAstroline-r6-003797.par: N o lines read (and that line wrap in "No" was as displayed). Here is the reason why: Tested in v3_113_0, and found it failed. -noInit was indeed the default in both the command line and SOPGUI, and it worked when the telescope was tracking, sending it to instChange position as desired. But the other case, when instChange -init was issued to a telescope with the brakes set, it did NOT slew to instChange.
