APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday August 20, 2003 (MJD 52872) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long Howard Brewington French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake, day three. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We started the night doing on sky testing of spectroscopy. Everything functioned properly and we finished one plate (1402). The rest of the night was spent testing SEGUE: scanStripe works to the extent that we can tell where it is scanning with no skippy. tccMon properly keeps track of the various coordinate systems for either flavor of stripe. goDrift generates a complaint from calcStripeParams about a keyword "eta" not being found in the process of generating an idReport file. calcStripeParams and stripeAxisRates give reasonable answers when run independently, but apparently calcStripeParams has problems as called by goDrift. seeingRun gives a readable plot, but the coordinates across the top are survey longitude rather than SEGUE. See PR iop/5597. ltmatch seems to work, but skippy does not. It fails after reading in the frames and looking for stars. We are unable to run skippy directly from astrom, since the latest version of astrom (v3_5d) uses v5_6 of astrotools. Curiously the SEGUE version of iop uses v3_5d of astrom as well, but v5_17 of astrotools. Which astrotools is it really using? See PR iop/5595. SEGUE skippy also generates a horrendous number of trace statements in the murmur log like IDA 201961 TEXTONLY trace 1, 0 long original: readAstrom IDA 201961 TEXTONLY trace 1, 0 postsubstitution: readAstrom It takes logTool nearly 10 minutes to recover from the assault. Looking at the headers of the frames shows several parameters missing. Namely, NODE, INCL, XBORE, YBORE are all listed as -9999. Could this be the reason for skippy being unhappy? Is this related to the goDrift complaint? See PR iop/5596. sdsshost started bogging down again regarding DA related tasks. gangs stopped being transferred. New iops wouldn't start. No ptvme errors showed. Occasionally a timeout talking to id5 would show up in the murmur log. However one could dsclat to id5 and an "i" showed activity. Dewar 5 was still reading out. Rebooting photo 2 solved the problem. See PR astroda-hardware/5598. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Spectrographs focused during afternoon checkout. Required a change of about +3000 for both. Started out focusing guider. Needed only about one "rib" of movement on the focus ring. Spectro on sky testing: 02:30Z Cartridge 2 1402 Doing this cartridge as a test of SOP and spectrograph systems. Some guide stars on slew. seeing 1.2 to 1.7 arcseconds Done in three exposures. Our first science since the shutdown! Not sure what PT dewpoint sensor is measuring, but it isn't an accurate dewpoint. The value is varying, but is 5 - 10 C lower than that shown by the 3.5m with occasional jumps to similar values to the one on the 3.5m SEGUE testing imager on 04:40Z Another battle with the S imager safety latch. French sternly scolded it and it behaved. Generally clear after 07:00Z. Good seeing. Too bad the moon is up. This could have been science. Run 4070: imaging stripe 1220 N mu 285 - 315 Got the following error on goDrift 2003-08-21 05:03:25Z: idReport: problem in calcStripeParams, setting many params to NaN. Error was: key "eta" not found in keyed list continuing with idReport anyway seeingRun plots OK (spaced normally) but coordinates are still survey longitude across the top and the "good acceptable bad" legend is printed over top of the coordinates. After much trouble getting gangs, we stopped the drift and rebooted photo 2 crate. This solved the gang transfer problem. Run 4071: Bias drift after crate reboot. Run 4072: More 1220 N 312 - 330 Run 4073: Test of normal imaging using SEGUE version 82 N starting at -162 and ending around Skippy works here, though all those trace statements in the murmur log really bog down logTool. Normal survey scanning seems to be functional under the SEGUE branch. Neither SEGUE stripe showed up in the imaging summary of logTool. In several logTool entries the instrument was blank or wrong. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4069 23:58Z 00:12Z 100 O 37.61 41.15 38 ignore 4070 ~285 ~315 MU SEGUE test 4071 07:23Z 07:39Z 100 O 149.29 153.28 41 bias 4072 ~312 ~330 MU SEGUE test 4073 09:15Z 10:53Z 82 N -164.26 -139.59 178 engineering ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4073 14 4 52 -4.200 0.640 -2.100 0.244 -0.00525 148 53 4073 18 4 48 -4.400 0.121 -2.100 0.114 -0.00511 148 53 4073 70 4 50 -3.900 0.111 -2.600 0.116 -0.00480 148 53 4073 121 4 51 -3.200 0.682 -2.800 0.140 -0.00375 148 53 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 4070 51 1 50 166 71 0.989 0.173 2.921 0.219 -0.00982 4070 51 1 50 166 67 0.980 0.133 3.090 0.266 -0.01039 4070 51 1 50 166 72 1.105 0.129 3.120 0.306 -0.01049 4070 51 1 50 166 77 1.053 0.194 3.081 0.260 -0.01036 4070 51 1 50 166 73 1.042 0.219 3.100 0.199 -0.01042 4070 147 1 59 150 70 1.376 0.422 2.478 0.218 -0.00833 4070 147 1 59 150 60 1.315 0.380 2.502 0.141 -0.00841 4070 147 1 59 150 67 1.422 0.380 2.485 0.182 -0.00835 4070 147 1 59 150 82 1.215 0.331 2.467 0.197 -0.00829 4070 147 1 59 150 71 1.205 0.325 2.462 0.162 -0.00828 4072 113 1 86 161 43 5.617 0.356 -15.148 0.220 0.05093 4072 113 1 86 161 63 3.541 0.320 -15.174 0.246 0.05102 4072 113 1 86 161 54 1.687 0.296 -15.131 0.191 0.05087 4072 113 1 86 161 50 -0.373 0.337 -15.085 0.190 0.05072 4072 113 1 86 161 37 -2.505 0.312 -15.213 0.270 0.05115 4073 132 1 53 32 14 1.798 0.135 2.881 0.187 -0.00969 4073 132 1 53 32 17 1.601 0.133 2.884 0.089 -0.00970 4073 132 1 53 32 18 1.496 0.186 3.024 0.156 -0.01017 4073 132 1 53 32 14 1.546 0.169 2.850 0.086 -0.00958 4073 132 1 53 32 18 1.438 0.101 2.704 0.171 -0.00909 4073 149 1 53 32 14 1.147 0.225 2.699 0.306 -0.00907 4073 149 1 53 32 24 1.095 0.122 2.816 0.415 -0.00947 4073 149 1 53 32 16 1.099 0.123 2.951 0.282 -0.00992 4073 149 1 53 32 15 1.069 0.136 2.804 0.346 -0.00943 4073 149 1 53 32 15 0.863 0.127 2.684 0.265 -0.00903 4073 160 1 53 32 21 1.579 0.190 1.880 0.121 -0.00632 4073 160 1 53 32 13 1.342 0.229 1.940 0.159 -0.00652 4073 160 1 53 32 16 1.266 0.181 2.002 0.199 -0.00673 4073 160 1 53 32 15 1.151 0.173 1.899 0.165 -0.00639 4073 160 1 53 32 17 1.146 0.195 1.765 0.227 -0.00593 ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 21996, plate -9999 ------- 23:47 21996 0.0 bias 00:18 21997 0.0 bias ----- sequence 21998, plate 678 ------- 00:27 21998 10.0 flat 00:45 21999 10.0 flat 00:48 22000 2.0 arc 00:52 22001 2.1 arc 00:54 22002 2.1 arc 01:10 22003 2.1 arc 01:13 22004 2.1 arc ----- sequence 22005, plate 1402 ------- 16.3 16.9 19.6 17.3 done 03:07 22005 10.0 flat 03:10 22006 2.0 arc 03:29 22007 900.1 target 03:45 22008 750.1 target 03:58 22009 600.1 target 04:05 22010 240.0 smear 04:09 22011 10.0 flat 04:11 22012 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:13Z cart 2 -104.47 -0.0003 59.79 0.0019 96.28 0.0136 1.000060 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL6611-6616, 6633 Stays: JL6618-6623, 6634 EndNight rejoiced ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:14Z cart 2 1.00006 -591 387 -275 -104 59.8 17.8 7 90 - Also for the second time, it magically cleared up when Howard quit his SOP session (which both times wasn't being used). What is the connection? Well the magic didn't last this time. IOPs didn't start, but my request for a scrolling display did finally get through. Took a look at the ptvme link to see if there was a problem there. ptvmeTest hangs. This is what I got back. I didn't get a prompt back. Couldn't be coaxed with ctrl-C. > ptvmeTest -n 1 -a 0x18000000 PID: 240916 IOPB size: 64 bytes ping: no operation: read loopCnt: 1 (defaulted) 100 loops per dot LWordCnt: 0x00000001 (defaulted) controller: 0 (defaulted) remNode: 1 --> /dev/ptvme0n1 remAddr: 0x18000000 (defaulted) IxferMode: 0x00 (defaulted) TxferMode: 0x00 (defaulted) After about 5 minutes my prompt came back, and subsequent tests gave the normal complete results for all nodes, showing no errors. no gangs teamster says its there but gets nothing I can transfer frames across the link ptvmeTest looks fine I can log into the nodes and things look fine Still murmur occasionallly shows Waiting for command response from id5 (crate 2, ICC 1), data server (client 1) ptvmeReset ineffectual (no surprise, all diagnostics show everything OK) dsclat to id5 worked and seemed to show signs of life. SO..... why no gangs? Why does host bog down so badly? If I understand poolDir, it looks like there are gangs for nearly every frame (the g flag is for gang?). The r flag stops being set for gangs after about frame 83 (r is for retrieved?) time stamp 05:48:53.50 . So it appears that the dense field isn't to blame. Gangs are being created and most have size, but for some reason aren't being transferred. This isn't the old garden variety ptvme failure, but there does seem to be some problem with id5 or host's ability to talk to it.
