APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday August 24, 2003 (MJD 52876) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Steph Snedden, Scot Kleinman ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 2 plates done- substantial signal (almost done) on a third. Clouds came and went all night. One weird problem with the spectrographs which fixed itself. We couldn't find the moth blower hose thingy. Could you bring it back and/or tell us where it is stored? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift: Lightning and rain nearby before sunset delayed afternoon checkout. No problems, but sirrobert had to be rebooted, possibly due to the network connection cable having come loose. Night: It partially cleared up around twilight, but humidity was rising. We took a chance and opened, starting with cartridge 7, plate 1406. Sky was still bright, so we used an fk5 star to center and it was well-centered with last night's offsets left in. We got an almost non-understandable S/N of 10.5 to 13.8 in a 20min exposure and declared the plate done (combined with two previous exposures). Next: cart 1 plate 1028, a lowz plate. GSOTGTF. We didn't qiute finish this plate (needs one more exposure) before it was past its prime. So, next up cart 8 plate 1104 (merged). GSOTGTF. The arc in the preCalib exposure failed with an invalid response from the mechanicals (see the murmur extract in the Problems section). We took a bias to try to clear things out but another arc failed. We took a flat, saw that it's e10 took OK, then the arc worked. Must have gotten out of synch or something. By this time, however, the clouds were pretty thick, so we were not able to start right away. Clouds never did permit any good data on this plate. It looks like at least one of the arc lines on this final good arc frame was weaker than usual; we can't figure how this could be related to our previous problems, but note it anyhow. (The spectro summary also reports a rather long arc which is obviously mistaken.) Conditions started improving ~09:45Z, so we went off to cart 5 plate 1122 (Munn). GSOTGTF. Clouds came in towards the end of this plate and we paused for a while, but managed to finish it nonetheless. BTW: We really appreciate being able to use the latch control panel for the slithead doors and latches again. Thanks to all those who helped make this happen (JEA, RHL, and the phenomenal day crew.) ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4079 22:38Z 23:02Z 100 O 21.51 27.67 55 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 22056, plate -9999 ------- 22:39 22056 0.0 bias 00:23 22059 2.1 arc 00:25 22060 2.1 arc ----- sequence 22061, plate -9999 ------- 00:42 22061 0.0 bias ----- sequence 22062, plate 1406 ------- 02:45 22062 10.0 flat 02:48 22063 2.0 arc 04:09 22064 1200.1 target 04:16 22065 240.0 smear 04:20 22066 10.0 flat 04:22 22067 2.0 arc ----- sequence 22068, plate 1028 ------- 04:38 22068 10.0 flat 04:41 22069 2.0 arc 05:02 22070 900.1 target 05:26 22071 1200.1 target 05:49 22072 1200.1 target 06:12 22073 1200.1 target 06:35 22074 1200.1 target 06:43 22075 240.0 smear ----- sequence 22076, plate 1104 ------- 06:59 22076 10.0 flat 07:08 22077 0.0 arc 07:10 22078 0.0 bias 07:15 22079 993.3 arc Obviously not right, see log 07:18 22080 10.0 flat 07:21 22081 2.0 arc ----- sequence 22082, plate 1122 ------- 09:51 22082 10.0 flat 09:53 22083 2.0 arc 10:16 22084 900.1 target 10:34 22085 900.1 target 11:04 22086 900.1 target 11:12 22087 240.0 smear ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:49Z spectro 262.92 0.0031 54.64 0.0008 105.22 -0.0082 1.000110 04:48Z spectro 38.31 0.0057 50.73 -0.0013 211.34 0.0162 0.999930 10:04Z spectro -23.66 0.0033 54.87 0.0000 160.19 -0.0201 1.000220 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:50Z 7-1406 1.00011 -1085 93 -175 263 54.5 12.8 15 80 gdr 1.5" 04:48Z 1-1028 0.99993 690 1526 -225 38 50.7 12.2 14 73 gdr 2.1" 10:04Z 5-1122 1.00022 -2171 -832 -200 -24 54.9 12.1 1 235 gdr 1.3" ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:15Z 57 45 0 127 (SE) 494 - 22:47Z 60 47 2 254 (WSW) 446 - 23:19Z 60 47 5 328 (NNW) 424 - 23:51Z 58 47 4 351 (NNW) 354 - 01:17Z 58 47 4 111 (ESE) 399 - 01:50Z 56 47 13 110 (ESE) 455 - 02:21Z 56 48 12 111 (ESE) 450 - 02:52Z 56 48 11 100 (E) 455 - 03:25Z 55 48 16 110 (ESE) 447 - 03:57Z 54 47 16 79 (E) 441 - 04:29Z 54 47 10 82 (E) 466 - 04:59Z 54 47 12 78 (ENE) 495 - 05:31Z 53 47 11 77 (ENE) 514 - 06:01Z 53 46 11 75 (ENE) 395 - 06:32Z 54 44 10 79 (E) 416 - 07:04Z 55 44 7 89 (E) 416 - 07:36Z 55 43 5 85 (E) 305 - 08:09Z 55 43 8 83 (E) 327 - 08:41Z 54 45 6 86 (E) 367 - 09:13Z 54 44 7 118 (ESE) 354 - 09:43Z 54 44 3 184 (S) 408 - 10:13Z 53 46 0 206 (SSW) 457 - 10:45Z 54 46 0 255 (WSW) 386 - 11:16Z 54 45 1 357 (NNW) 448 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Doors cracked; fans on: ~01:00Z All closed: ~11:35Z ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_119_0 Watcher: v2_24_0 MCP: v5_20_0 TPM: tpm_v2_30_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.1 July 22 2003 sdssProcedures: v1_73 SoS: v4_9_13 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.0960 0.0790 Axial B 0.8170 0.7970 Axial C 0.8270 0.8240 Trans D -9.0990 -9.0560 Lateral E 1.8370 1.8870 Lateral F 0.0000 1.4300 GALILS Commanded: 5400. -3700. 900. -200. 31550. 30650.
