APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday September 17, 2003 (MJD 52900) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Scot Kleinman Dan Long Mike Harvanek (swing) Eric Neilsen (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- We be shakin'! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Night Summary: --------------- We have a good 2" pointing model and a collimated telescope. We fund signs of mirror oscillation twice during the pointing model. The new astrom/astrotools have several problems - the worst of which is a complete inability to run skippy and ltMatch. The OLD astrom/astrotools combination, however, performs admirably, even in SEGUE stripes. The SEGUE IOP cannot take a bias drift. We got a SEGUE scan in good, but moony conditions. We have donuts and ran checkBias. Several TPM watcher errors are reported in the Problems section. We do appreciate the new longer error messages, though! All SDSS Observers were present this evening. Don't worry, we took pictures. http://hello.apo.nmsu.edu/~sjnk/sdss/pics/index.html The engineering camera is on the Lindy cart INSIDE the enclosure. Day shake summary: ------------------ PT FF lamp changed 09-16-03 by Carlos and Wendell. PT checkout done. No problems other than the cryotiger. Cleaned all tape drives including spectro, PT and spare. Spectro monthly checkout done. biasGen and biasCheck done. New fiducial tables built and installed. Details are given in the log section. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Pointing Model -------------- We found the telescope far enough away from collimation that we felt we had to collimate with the engineering camera before we started a pointing model. Once done, we did a 72 point model and had two stars which showed signs of a mirror oscillation, although we could not catch the TPM MIG readings in the act. The new model fit with the parameters was a very bad fit (41" RMS in altitude) with a large offset in altitude. The new fit resulted in a 2.07" RMS after removing one large-offset point. We followed this up with a 35 point model to verify all was well with the first model. During this model, the TCC complained in its own foreign language about not being able to slew to one object: see Problems. The second model agreeed with the newly-implemented model to 2.6". With the new engCam CCDs, you have to do a set inst=bigengcam and do some stuff on the guider mac to get it happy with the engcam CCD: changing the camera from sensys to sensys2 from a system control panel, then rebooting the mac and running the guider software. Imager ----- Run 4099: We next mounted the imager to do a more precise collimation check, verify aliveness and do testing with the SEGUE IOP. The collimation looked pretty close, but we thought we could do better. We were wrong. We could find no compelling reason to adjust either of the primary tilts. We did note, however, that we had preferentally squashed (in the chip readout direction) donuts on one side of the camera (say dewars 4,5,6) that switched sides (to 1,2,3 in this example) at each side of optimal focus. We decided to re-relax the mirror to see if things changed - they didn't. We found optimal focus at -280 and made some donuts. Frame 109 is in focus; 113 is -300 from optimal; 117 is optimal+300. Stored in the usual place: /data/photo/optics/52900. SEGUE Scan ----------- Run 4100: In focus at the beginning. Under photometric, but moony skies, we went to SEGUE stripe 1220, starting at mu=300 (with the SEGUE IOP, of course). We could not get skippy to work in either the SEGUE IOP or SEGUE astrom, but we noted the servers (running the old IOP) did manage to run a successful skippy once. Much flailing followed along with a call to Eric and we discovered teh culprit is the SEGUE version of astrom. The old IOP built on the old astrom along with the SEGUE IOP with the old astrom set up before running also works. That's right - I said the OLD IOP based on the OLD astrom based on the OLD astrotools runs skippy fine on SEGUE stripes. Since we believe the SEGUE astrom is only different in that it is built on the SEGUE version of astrotools, we suspect there is a bug in the SEGUE astrotools (v5_17) which is causing us trouble. The error messages seen are in the Problems section. (Ditto with running skippy on standard survey stripes.) The Problems section also shows another problem in the SEGUE astrotools - it hung when given a stripeAxisRates for a survey stripe that wasn't up. This command worked fine in the current astrotools. We filed PRs on both these problems. We stopped this run at frame 4100 so we could get a good bias drift. But, the SEGUE IOP can not, apparently, take an imager bias - see Problems, so we took the bias with the current IOP. Conditions during this scan were largely perfect, but for the presence of moon. BIAS ---- Run 4103 is an on the telescope bias. The results of checkBias are in the Problems section. The bias QA plots looked reasonable, although many plots showed no red (nominal values). The mosaic images also looked fine. FLATS ----- We also turned on the mager FF lamps after we closed so we could run checkFlat. Morning prevented the running of checkFlat; we'll do it tomorrow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Details from day shake: ----------------------- Spectro monthly checkout: After multiple iterations a decent flat, arc and Hartmann series (exposures 22262 to 22265) were finally obtained. The temp was 14.5 C and was taken from weatherdisplay on galileo because the TPM was reporting the ambient temp to be 0 due to a bug. When collimating, I assumed focus was achieved if |mean| < 0.30 pix as per the instructions.
