A ptvmeReset appeared to fix the problem. See the problems section for the ptvmeTest results. Night shift: ------------ Clouds at sunset and a radar echo delayed opening until 02:20Z. We started with spectroscopy. Plate 1152: F-stars plate. There were still plenty of clouds around, though thin. Of course, as soon as we started an exposure, the clouds thickened, and our first 30 minute exposure had (S/N)^2 < 1. The plate was identified as plate '0' in son-of-spectro, although a 'loadCart 6 1152' was issued. This was changed with apofix. Clouds kept us from getting any useful signal on this plate. 04:13Z Plate 1539: low-z plate. loadCart worked fine this time, so ???? Clouds thinning again. Guide stars on goToField. Clouds thickened again. Aaaargh. Clouds thinned enough finally to let us get a (S/N)^2 of 9.6 in 2400 s. 06:48Z Plate 1504: merged plate. Guide stars on goToField. Finally, a good break in the clouds. Three exposures totalling 3600 s gave a (S/N)^2 = 15.6. 08:23Z Plate 1563: low-z plate. Guide stars on gotToField. At 09:09Z the rotator aborted. The exposure was aborted. We went down to the telescope and ran into major axis motion problems. See the problems section for all the symptoms. We called Jon and French and filed PR 5729. The axis motion problems ended the night. We went down to the telescope. We tried moving the rotator both with the tcc and mcp. We could clear the amplifier, but as soon as we tried to move the rotator, we would get a large error on the MCP menu and an immediate abort. We tried power-cycling the amplifier, but it did not make any difference. The green LED pattern on the rotator amp was the same as for the other amplifiers. Then, while trying a rotator move with the MCP, the telescope ran away in altitude toward the zenith. The altitude value displayed on the MCP menu did not change as the telescope moved. The telescope came to a hard stop just before zenith, when a stop button was pushed. At about that time we saw that the MCP had crashed. We rebooted the MCP, cleared a velocity slip in altitude caused by the runaway and started to carefully bring the telescope around to stow. We were able to move in azimuth with no problems. We started to bring the telescope down in altitude slowly and noted that there was a voltage offset of about -2500 from the normal values. Moving down, the voltage was close to -5000, moving up, it was close to zero. The counterweights were at their correct positions (and we even checked that we had indeed installed the corrector). Furthermore, during the first test slew of the evening, the altitude voltage was normal, so we don't believe this is a physical out-of-balance condition. We were still able to bring the telescope down in altitude so that we could close. We did notice what we thought could be an oscillation in azimuth as we moved down in altitude. Once the telescope was stowed, we shut off the amplifiers and tried to manually move the rotator to where the fill lines could be connected. Jon said that it could be moved with two people applying force, but we could not get it to budge. Maybe we didn't push hard enough or maybe it is physically jammed. French says it would take a lot of force to move it.
