Clouds threaten, but clear skies and reasonable seeing first half. Variable cirrus and generally poor seeing second half. * We think we may have finished plate 1666. When combined with data from 52988 and 52989, there is a (S/N)^2 of 30 in all but r1, and SoS warned that S/N might be adversely affected by a whopping fiber on that chip. We will hold off observing or replugging this plate until we hear it is done, or needs more time. Could someone (Brian?, David?) please check this as soon as possible? Thanks. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Night: ------ There are clouds low in the NW at sunset, and the satellite loop shows them moving this way, so we decide to start with spectroscopy. It was clear for longer at the beginning of the night than we had anticipated. Apparently subsiding air from the high pressure area kept causing the clouds moving in from the NW to dissipate before reaching us. The clouds finally won around 6:30Z. Refocusing spectrographs after opening (time ran out during afternoon, so we decided to do it once we opened). The xsigma values are about as high as I've ever seen (1.3) in the pre focus frames. Given that the last spectro focus was done at -12C and it is now +6C, maybe this is to be expected. The piston tonight of about +12000 almost reverses the -13000 of piston applied in the two focus sessions on 52989. During the focus sequence, collimator actuator C failed to move on one of the pistons. We tried moving it separately (mechMoveColl), and it worked. No idea why it failed in the mechPiston command. Even if the scale error is a factor of two that still makes it over 5 arcseconds at 2 airmasses. 11:25Z Refocussing after temperature drop of about 6C over the last couple hours gets fwhm back below 4 arcseconds. Exposure 23936 (the science exposure for plate 1304) apparently did not get transferred to host before endNight started running. This may be due to a server/ptvme failure as the servers also died around this time. In any case, that exposure will not be on the tapes. ptvmeTest revealed all nodes had non-zero error numbers in the last two entries (if you want the gory details see the problems section) ptvmeReset cleared the errors, allowing new servers to start.
