APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday December 25, 2003 (MJD 52999) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Howard Brewington Night: Jurek Krzesinski, Pete Newman Moral support: Connie Rockosi (by phone) plus Steph Snedden and Russet McMillan, Jack Dembicky and Bill Ketzeback from That Big Telescope Next Door, who all gathered for Christmas dinner. Merry Christmas everyone!! ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science and Santa Claus. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- A quiet productive night with variable light cloud. In between completing five plates (1307, 1468, 1595, 1597, 1638) and getting more data on plate 1359...we feasted! ---=== Christmas 2003 Menu ===--- Leaf & tomato salad Italian tomato, mozzarella & stuffed olive salad Spanakopita Devilled eggs Fried potato & pork with tomatoes Baked hams Stuffed roasted goose Butter-sautéed squashes & snow peas Steamed carrots Roasted red potatoes Mashed sweet potatoes Christmas pudding with brandy butter Pumpkin pie Chocolate mousse Home-baked bread and dinner rolls Brie and crackers Mulled cider Olive Branch French & Flying Goat's Mrs Garland's Blend coffees (Fancy souvenir copies of the menu are available for a small fee! :-) ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon Checkout: -------------------- Spectro focus was checked and sp1 was adjusted (see end of log for details). Night: -------------------- Variable high clouds before sunset and moon up, so we start with spectroscopy. Variable clouds continued most of the night. Observing sequence: Guide stars found on gotoField unless noted. 00:30Z Plate 1468, cartridge 3. Done in 4 exposures, 4800 s, when combined with data from MJD 52996. FStar program plate requiring (S/N)^2 >= 30. Started well before end of evening twilight and used FK5 to center. Jurek's SOP session had trouble with a failed preCalib - see problem section #1 for details. Occasional thin clouds with good seeing. 03:35Z Plate 1638, cartridge 5. Done in 10 exposures, 14400 s, when combined with data from MJD 52997. Orion program with multiple pointings. Guide stars found with cleared offsets. We used +-11 arcsec offsets for the sky exposures as the seeing FWHM was somewhat high. SoS requested postCalibs after the first few exposures, so we took both midCalibs and postCalibs at the end of the sequence. We used 11 arcsec offsets for the skies, based on the calculation from the FWHM in the instructions, but did not take account of tracking error for the additional exposure times - 1500 sec vs. the 900 sec assumed - so we hope the offsets were sufficient. We note this plate took a total of 17400 sec of science exposures (although not in conflict with main survey targets). 09:00Z Plate 1595, cartridge 6. Done in 3 exposures, 2400 s. SDSS plate. Photometric, but seeing variable and too late to start Apache Wheel, so we continue with specotrscopy. 10:06Z Plate 1597, cartridge 8. Done in 3 exposures, 2700 s. SDSS plate. 11:17Z Plate 1307, cartridge 9. Done in 3 exposures, 2400 s. SDSS plate. 12:24Z Plate 1359, cartridge 7. Not done in 1 exposure even when combined with data from MJD 52996. SDSS plate. FK5 needed to center the pointing. We pushed well into twilight to try to finish this plate, but the last exposure was sky-dominated. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4346 21:35Z 22:21Z 100 O 127.08 138.56 38 ignore doghouse bias ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): n UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 24223, plate 1468 ------- 22:00 24223 0.0 bias ----- sequence 24223, plate 1468 ------- Ignore - Jurek started a new SOP session and got control back. The exposure numbers were then flagged as out of sequence, but following the instructions on screen worked. We flagged the mis-read exposures as bad in SoS. ---=== Spectro Focus ===--- ambTemp 2C Numbers before adjustments: sp1: A= -1065 B= -1123 C= - 533 sp2: A= -4795 B= -4607 C= -3608 Adjustments made: mechPiston -2381
