APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday March 18, 2004 (MJD 53083) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Pete Newman Night: Mike Harvanek, Jurek Krzesinski Visitors: A tour group from the SDSS Collaboration Meeting at NMSU in Las Cruces, including Arne Henden, Naohisa Inada, Masamune Oguri, Naoki Yasuda, Issha Kayo, Kazuhiro Yahata, Linda Henden, Fiona Hoyle, John Loveday and Nick Ball, Joe Helmboldt ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- 6 am MT: We refilled ln2 spectrograph dewars when closed the telescope, the weight of the main dewar went slightly below 100, but the spectrographs are safe for next 10 hours. Last night and tonight we got problems with the telescope pin. It didn't get into the locking hole most of the times we wanted to pin the telescope at 90 deg. Lubrication Jon made the other day aparently didn't help. Could someone take care about it, please? It was a good spectroscopy night. Plates Done: 1154, 1757, 1441, 1607, 1367, 1374, 1466, 1353 Cart 6 - fiber 11 angles calculated. Problems --------- plate 1367: sp2 went out of spec on flat (xmin was -10), we pistoned the mirror and got xmin -2. Then a flat on the next plate 1374) showed xmin = 6, which is till in spec, but why we observed such a sudden jump in xmin? Something is still not right with sp2. Steph - DIMM behavied well tonight. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Swing shift =========== No anomalies. Night: ------ Twilight: for the beginning of the night we've got cart 5 plt 1154 mounted. Fk5 found after clearing offsets from last night. It was 8" E and 6"N from where we were pointing. Plate done with 2 additional exposure. SOS warnings: sdR-r1-00025650.fit: WARNING: Bad sky residuals at 5877 to 5926 Ang; Peak chi= 6.59 sdR-r1-00025650.fit: WARNING: Max sky-residual chi2 = 115.417 at 6293.43 Ang (ignoring 5577) sdR-r1-00025651.fit: WARNING: Bad sky residuals at 5883 to 5921 Ang; Peak chi= 7.15 03:22Z cart 7 plt 1757, fk5 found with offsets from the previous plate. Seeing is REALLY the best one we ever seen (0.85"). But cirrus clouds make the efficiency the efficiency prytty low. Postcalib required and done. Plate done. 05:22Z cart 3 plt 1441, fk5 found after clearing the offsets. Plate done. 06:37Z cart 8 plt 1607, fk5 found with offset 10"E (after clearing offsets from the previous plate. Plate done. SOS warnings: sdR-r1-00025668.fit: WARNING: Bad sky residuals at 5972 to 6020 Ang; Peak chi= 3.52 sdR-r1-00025669.fit: WARNING: Bad sky residuals at 5961 to 6041 Ang; Peak chi= 4.43 07:49Z cart 1 plt 1367, fk5 found with offset 24"E and 13"S. This is the worst pointing we've ever seen. Why? (temperature? 9 C). During the first exposure we've noticed that xmin on b2 flat (25670) exposure turned into red. We read out the current exposure after 600s and took another flat to be sure that we are out of spec (all flats taken on previous paltes were in spec and about half of the value we've got for this flat). NO, the second flat was also bad. (QA check didn't show anything obvious on bad flat exposure). We had to piston sp2 -800 -800 800. Exposures 25670-25673 were declared as bad - 40 minuts of observing time lost. We started second set of precalib (tey were good) and proceeded with observations. Plate done. 09:33Z cart 9 plt 1374 mounted. Stars on go to field - finaly :). Flat is in spec on this plate, but somehow xmin on b2 moved from -2 (which was the value on the previous plate) up to 6 (on the current). Something still is not right with sp2. Plate done. SOS warnings: sdR-r1-00025681.fit: WARNING: Bad sky residuals at 5815 to 5899 Ang; Peak chi= 6.78 10:32Z cart 2 plt 1466 mounted. Guide stars on go to field. Plate done. 11:33Z cart 4 plt 1353 mounted. Stars on slew. We need one good exposure on this plate. And we've got it - plate done. Already in twilight but we are trying to check the pointing on cart 6 and mabe get angle position on fiber 11. 12:10Z cart 6 plt 1379 - mounted. Tonight we found stars on slew. But gflat didn't make it, resulting in error: File /data/spectro/guider/ doesn't exist, isn't readable, or is a directory Saved 19.0 seconds Opening Petals and turning off flat field lamps mcpPut: ffs.select 3 ffs.open mcpPut: ffl.off Error: Unknown handle: NULL Second time however gflat worked fine. Fiber 11 was anabled, then we issued starpattern and then computeFIberAngle.
