APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday May 8, 2004 (MJD 53134) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Atsuko Nitta Howard Brewington Mike Harvanek (swing) Jon Brinkman (phone and in person) Dan Long (via phone) Our Hero Russel Owen (via phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shakedown and science. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o New pointing model data taken and new model implemented. o We found guide stars on gotoField after the new model was implemented. o We shook spectro on sky. We could not confirm the auto-diabling feature to be working based on what we see in the guiderDataWindow. Except for that, all seems well (no magical 1.41" seeing (PR6000) or message about looking for /data/spectro/guider (PR6001)). o No shake with imager. (we ran out of time) o We did not notice any strange behavior with piezos. o Spectro Frames 26568 were not declared bad before we started endNight. o For once we had a non-paralan related guider problem. We had to replace PXL file on guiderMac in order to use the guider. No idea how PXL file got corrupted since all worked well last night. The debugging took about 6 hrs and much help from Russel O who walked us through reinstalling new files among many other things. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: The collimation check was not done this afternoon because the engineering camera was mounted. Mike found that we could not talk to the engcam any longer. The rebooting, power cycling did not help. Paralan had a happy green light. The program to take a test image on guiderMac successfully takes an image, but when we try to "set inst" in tcc, we get: 0 0 F Modu="cam_o_SetCamera"; Text="could not understand reply from guide image controller:" 0 0 I Modu="cam_o_SetCamera"; Text="reply: ; ppk error: Error code = 129" (ppk129 means "it is not a valid name for opening the camera") A call to JB informed us that this is not a hardware problem since the test program will not be able to take any image if it were. In desperation, we reconnected the cables to the spectro guider to see if we can talk to it. After doing the obvious resetting the SenSys and rebooting the guiderMac, we found that we cannot set to inst to spectro either -- same ppk129 error message as we get when we try to set to engcam. We called Russel O. He suspected communication error and he suggested we try to swap paralan at the computer room end and try again. There was a spare paralan on top of the one in used so we swapped and got the ppk129 error. We then cleaned the cables that comes in/out of the paralan in the control room, but no success. We found another paralan in a cabinet in the computer room and tried that one -- no success. We tried calling JB but his phone was busy. We decided to try Dan (we are most sorry to have bothered you and Chris on the anniversary dinner) to pick his brains. He reminded us that the list of ppk error message and what it means were in the control room. We found it which said ppk 129 meant (it is not a valid name for opening the camera)a Dan said it sounded like we did not have the SenSyn set right but we have checked it many times. We then looked at the config.txt file, but saw nothing wrong. JB called back. We tried diliberately having the wrong SenSys set and see what we get (we are out of ideas). JB suggested we call Russel back since he cannot think of anything hardware related and the error sounded like it was software related which he did not know much of. We called Russel who then checked the files on TCC to make sure the files on TCC were fine. He suggested that we can, 1. We can bring down the guiderMac to the telescope to bypass the paralan. 2. Reinstall the software. 3. Reinstall the libary. 4. Reinstall the OS ---aahhhhh. Russel walked us through installing the new software GIm Cntl 4.1b6 along with the libraries over the phone (and JB drove in while we were installing them). We found out that the new PXL file did the trick(!!). We were able to successfully do "set inst". We quickly learned that we were not able to take guider images. The command seems to hang. So we did telstop telrun set inst=spectro (we have not bothered to reconnect back to the engCam) gcam doread 1 But the command seemed to continue to hang. We tried with the old code (GIm Ctrl 4.1b2), but still no luck. Then Russel called to tell us that: 1. It is possible that the application and the appropriate config file must be on the desk top to run succesfully. He also suggested that we should the old code (the one we have been using until tonight) since it worked well for so long. 2. The config.txt that goes with the new code might not have the place to put the images set correctly. The first line of the config.txt should say where the images are saved. Also check the amount of free diskspace on Mac since we might have written some frames on there already. 3. If all else fails, then try rebooting the mountain (not only the guiderMac). So we copied the old application and its config.txt file back onto the desktop again, rebooted the Mac (this should not be necessary, but if in doubt reboot the Mac has been tonight's philosophy). YES! We were able to set the inst and take do guider images in a row. We took couple guider images and then changed to engCam (rehooking the cables, changing SenSys to SenSys2 and rebootm, restart the guider software) and made sure we were able to take images. Yeahhh. We got images! We are back in business. NOTE: We were VERY lucky Russel the Wonderful was available tonight. He said he will not be available from tomorrow until Tuesday night. 06:25Z We open. We start with taking pointing model data. 07:16Z According to the cloud camera the clouds are forming above our head. We keep close eyes. Russet comes in to say she suspects strong correlation between the guider starting to work and the clouds forming on top of us........ Around 07:40Z Clouds are too thick for us to see the star. we hold. Around 08:00Z We are finding stars between clouds again. We managed to get 64 points out of 72 points. We used this data to create a new model. coeff change value sigma 1 IE +4.973 -213.58 0.743 2 IA -8.815 -251.59 0.882 3 AN +2.501 -4.50 0.263 4 AW -1.178 +1.41 0.270 5 HWCA2 +2.549 +0.65 0.347 6 HWSA2 +3.103 -0.21 0.365 7 HNCA1 +2.005 +0.40 0.398 8 HNSA1 +4.377 -0.73 0.408 9 CA +0.594 +58.33 0.626 10 PZZ1 +27.774 -141.97 2.542 11 ACEC +8.709 +1.38 0.532 12 ACES -6.438 +0.17 0.520 13 TX -10.957 -2.22 1.252 09:30Z The AZ aborted while taking a small pointing model to check the new mode. Two axis inits cleared the axis, but the AZ aborted on the next slew. We decided to clear the brakes with MCP and make sure we can move in MCP before continuing the small pointing model data. The abort was caused by slip. Reset and we continue. Cart4 Plate 1414 Stars on gotoField!!! We take one 10min exposure in twilight. This exposure was bad. Too much sky. With moon and twilight, it was too much. oh well. PR6026 autodisabling the fibers with no guide stars. The guiderDataWindow showed that fiber 4 (which does not have a guide star) is "bad". Also the "in use" column shows that this fiber is "in use". Usually when we manually disable the fiber, we get * marks in the fiber we disabled. Based on this, we do not have auto-diabling working. We changed this PR state to assign. PR 6000 "two stupid bugs in new (gunn) guider" There was no magigcal 1.41" seeing -- our aveage was about 1.1"-1.3" being the worst. We did not see the magical 1.41" seeing. So we closed the PR. Connie if you think this was not a valid testing and we need to test when the seeing is around 1.4", please send the PR state back to needtest. PR 6001 "check for empty last.image file before using it to get guider image filename" We did not get any error message regarding sop trying to look for /data/spectro/guider. since sop passed this test last shake up and our brief shake tonight, we will close this PR. endNight finished successfully. We did not have time to test with imager on sky, but since all bug fixes in the new iop is in sop and we tested sop on sky, we decided to declare iop v3_138_0 current. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4618 23:58Z 00:13Z 100 O -64.21 -60.44 39 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n):y QA Procedures Done (y/n):n UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 26564, plate -9999 ------- 23:53 26564 0.0 bias ----- sequence 26567, plate -9999 ------- 05:15 26567 0.0 bias ----- sequence 26568, plate 1414 ------- 10:59 26568 600.1 target 11:02 26569 10.0 flat 11:04 26570 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10:58Z 8 1414 276.92 0.0013 57.98 0.0003 113.96 0.0058 1.000100 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL7488 Stays: JL7489 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 10:58Z 8 1414 1.00010 -988 390 50 277 58.0 11.8 9 242 gdr 1.1 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:30Z 61 19 12 273 (W) 895 - 00:02Z 61 21 15 285 (WNW) 932 - 00:34Z 62 22 12 303 (WNW) 1013 - 01:46Z 58 21 2 337 (NNW) 1143 - 02:20Z 58 21 8 318 (NW) 1156 - 02:51Z 56 23 9 318 (NW) 1345 - 03:23Z 56 23 0 237 (WSW) 1263 - 03:55Z 56 26 6 308 (NW) 1208 - 04:28Z 55 25 7 2 (N) 1298 - 05:00Z 55 26 6 336 (NNW) 1191 - 05:32Z 55 25 11 332 (NNW) 1155 - 06:04Z 55 26 7 305 (NW) 1186 - 06:37Z 55 25 13 322 (NW) 1323 - 07:09Z 55 25 10 326 (NW) 1200 - 07:41Z 55 25 2 350 (NNW) 1145 - 08:13Z 55 25 12 328 (NNW) 1205 - 08:46Z 55 24 10 322 (NW) 1220 - 09:18Z 54 25 10 308 (NW) 1183 - 09:50Z 54 25 8 267 (W) 1275 - 10:22Z 53 26 6 267 (W) 1418 - 10:54Z 53 26 7 237 (WSW) 1304 - 11:27Z 50 26 7 223 (SW) 1204 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 03:30Z Enclosure west door half open, east door open and fans on.
