APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday November 6, 2004 (MJD 53316) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Mike Harvanek Night: Steph Snedden, Pete Newman Support: Dan Long, Scot Kleinman (by phone) Visitors: SNe Team: Rick Kessler (U. Chicago), Douglas Tucker (FNAL) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernovae program. ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We got an hour of dubious imaging data for the supernovae program before heavy clouds closed us for the rest of the night. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Scot did some imager calibrations (u1). The details can be found in a separate email. Spectro collimation adjusted. Details in the Problems section. No problems to report. Night: ------ Lots of cloud during the afternoon, but they seem to be breaking up around sunset, so we proceed with imaging for the supernovae program. See imagaing details below. We hit some problems with comminucations between IOP and the TCC, and had noted other oddities (e.g. tccMon unable to connect to the TCC) on recent nights. We plan on issuing a telstop then telrun when we are next off the sky to clear out the TCC (we don't want to do this while running, as all IOP connections to the TCC will be closed. We also discovered a problem with skippy resulting from the goStare imager calibrations done this afternoon - see problems section for details. We closed about 03:00Z when heavy cloud showed on local radar, and did not reopen. endNight is running as this log is being sent. We will ship the imaging tapes to FNAL, although we suspect the data are too poor even for finding supernovae. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 4937 22:43Z 23:14Z 100 O 96.42 104.15 66 ignore doghouse 4938 00:57Z 01:13Z 100 O 130.07 134.01 40 bias 4939 01:20Z 01:38Z 82 N 121.28 125.89 45 ignore 4940 does not appear in i4l. We decided to start again from a new IOP session. However, that hung, not returning from the scanStripe command. Steph closed a different IOP session, and then got control back on the hung IOP. We suspect there is a problem in the TCC (given other odd behavior over the last couple of nights) and plan on rebooting tcc25m once we are off the sky. ===================================== Run 4940 - 82N, Supernovae program, 125.6 <= Lambda <= 141.4 There is considerable patchy cloud around during this scan, so these data are not of main-survey quality. Qualitative comments on seeing are per seeingRun. We had to end the drift early because of heavy cloud. 01:38Z goDrift Frame Lambda Comments ----- ------ ------------------------------------------------------------- 16 125.6 Focus loop congerged. We eventually guessed this might be related to the goStare calibrations made this afternoon, since that was when the /astrolog/53116/opConfig-53316.par file containing ccdconfig structures was created. In this file, the 'staring' structures preceeded the 'drifting' structures. We copied over the opConfig-53315.par file from the previous day which had the 'drifting' structures first, whereupon skippy ran fine. We will file a PR against skippy on this, since it should have been able to find the correct structures. Thanks to Dan and Scot for helping debug this problem.
