APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday December 18, 2004 (MJD 53358) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Pete Newman Atsuko Nitta ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Very good night fo spectroscopy. Photometric, but moony the first half. The seeing was variable which did not allow us to do imaging, but allowed us to obtain good spectroscopic data. o Good signal on 2063, 1761 o Tremonti plate 1181 done! Weeeee! o 1931, 2082, 1953, 1750 are done. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checks ---------------- The imager doghouse bias run was incorrectly marked as "bias" instead of "ignore". Spectrographs' focus and collimation were checked. There was a problem moving the sp1 mirror again. See end of log for details. The azimuth fiducial at 137deg was not reading when moving counterclockwise. By late afternoon, the enclosure was at -3.5C thanks to the ThermoKing, while outside temperatures had been as high as +5C before falling quickly. The dewpoint was far below either of these, so we kept the enclosure shut until sunset. This was al little ambitious: when we did open, the mirrors had to warm up by~2K. Night ----- We open under photometric sky with half a Moon, so start with spectroscopy. 00:26Z Plate 2063, cartridge 2. SEGUE faint, needing (S/N)^2 >= 50 in all cameras. Took two guiderFlatFields to get the fibers centered. (We see this quite often: the initial gcam image has the fibers partly outside the fitting area square on the saoDisp display. Could the fitting squares be enlarged by say 15%?). FK5 on edge of fiber with last night's offsets. During focussing, we had an instance of the guider image not arriving, followed immediately by loss of connection to the TCC (from the point of view of Pete's sopGUI). A tccClose and startDa -tcc got it going again. Science started ~15 mins before 18deg twilight when moonlight dominated residual sky brightness. The first two exposures called for midCals which were taken. We got total of 4 science exposures for this plate. Cart 7 Plate 1181 Tremonti plate ================================ 03:08Z guide starts after clearing offsets. Pointing 4 finshed with one additional exposure combined with last night's exposures. Pointing 5 finished with 3 exposures. The guide stars were kept within 0.5" of where they should be. After finishigin pointing 5, the scale and focus were adjusted and recorded them. Pointing 6 finished with 3 exposures. We do a postCalib although SoS did not call for it, just in case. The seeing is variable, 1.5 to 2", so we will stay with spectro. Cart 4 Plate 1931 ======================= fk5 without previous offsets found on the NW corner of a 15s exposure. We finished this plate with three exposures. postCalib done on SoS's request. Seeing is still variable, sometimes going up to 2.5". We continue to spectro. Cart 6 Plate 2082 ========================= stars on gotoField. The plate was done in three exposures. The seeing is still variable, often going above 2". So we will stick to spectro. The postCalib recommendation from SoS came too late. Cart 1 Plate 1953 ===================== stars on gotoField. Finished in three exposures. Cart 5 Plate 1750 ====================== First loadCart gave complaints about darks etc. (please see PROBLEM section). The second loadCart succeeded. But the gcam images following gotoField did not show up in the saoDisplay. So we restarted saoDisplay which fixed the problem. The guide stars did NOT show up on gotoField and we had to fk5. How shocking. Finished in three exposures. Cart 8 Plate 1761 ================== guide stars on gotoField. We got two good exposures. 13:00Z Closed. endNight ran successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5076 22:39Z 23:07Z 100 O 136.96 143.93 56 bias Ignore!
