APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday January 5, 2005 (MJD 53376) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Atsuko Nitta Steve Bastian (late-nite visitor) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Finished two plates (2069 and 1761) and acquired signal on four others. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- Normal checkout. No issues/problems. Night ----- We had some trouble rolling back the enclosure at the start of observing due to some safety interlocks on the west garage door having been bypassed to allow it to open. Ice that formed from snowmelt earlier in the day kept it from opening normally. Solved the problem and carried on. 03:00Z Cart 6, Plate 2085 (tile 1399, chunk99) No stars on gotoField, but clouds are moderately thick. Then we noticed that the slew did not complete; the brakes came on at (az,el) = (109,22). At this time we noted that the "MCP is unavailable", having likely rebooted itself. At 03:09Z, it came back but it appeared to be unresponsive. At this point, we did a hard reboot of the MCP. We eventually determined that an altitude slip caused the slew to bail out, so we cleared the slip and carried on. Then it hit us... we'd started with the wrong cart. Cart 6 is a late-night cartridge. Sent the scope to instChange and put on... 03:42Z Cart 2, Plate 2042 (tile 8008, segue104) No stars on gotoField. Did an fk5InFiber, then an offset of A=-2 to get the stars. While getting set up we noted that the mcpMenu and watcher reported that the spectro slithead doors were closed, while they were in fact very much open. We got big out-of-spec XSIGMA and WSIGMA numbers on the preCalib for r1, so we had to stop to refocus the spectrographs. We did the refocus at a rotator angle of 95 degrees -- where it was left at the end of the last slew -- rather than the canonical 45 degrees. The plate was near expiration by the time we finished the refocus, so we got one science exposure only. 05:20Z Cart 3, Plate 2069 (tile 8035, seguefaint105) Had a a slip in azimuth on the way to instChange and found the telescope having reached the requisite altitude but stopped at the wrong azimuth. Cleared the slip, re-init'd the axes, and swapped the cartridge. Guider monitor stopped responding while we tried acquiring the field; we kicked it stiffly and carried on. Stars on gotoField. We begin with a (S/N)^2 = 44.3 on this plate. Started with a 20-minute exposure but upped that to 30 minutes since the plate was close to expiring. Finished this plate. 06:20Z Cart 7, Plate 2078 (tile 8044, segue106) Stars on gotoField. Got through two exposures of 1200 s each, and about 600 s into a third when clouds forced us to read out early. While we waited, we did the postCalib recommended in SoS. The sky did not clear up before the plate expired. 10:40Z Cart 8, Plate 1761 (tile 1266, chunk92) We start with (S/N)^2 = 6.4 on this plate. Had to do an fk5InFiber to get stars with an offset of A=-10, D=5. Our first 900 s exposure came in a little on the low side for (S/N)^2, so we bumped the next exposure up to 1200 s. Finished the plate in these two exposures. 11:50Z Cart 5, Plate 1751 (tile 1256, chunk90) We had an error too large to correct in altitude on gotoField, and did not find stars once there. Forced a fiducial in altitude, but that didn't help. Two unsuccessful spiral patterns later and a quick check of the TPM display showed that I'd mounted the entirely wrong cartridge! Run run run, swap swap swap. Back on the sky at 12:15Z. Stars on gotoField. In order to get science exposured before twilight, we skipped the preCalib with the intent of doing an automatic postCalib at the end of the science sequence. Finished up just after 13:00Z. endNight rejoiced. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5099 23:03Z 23:21Z 100 O 160.62 165.02 37 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 30189, plate 2085 ------- 23:41 30189 10.0 flat 23:43 30190 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30191, plate -9999 ------- 00:06 30191 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30192, plate 2042 ------- 4.4 4.4 7.9 6.6 03:56 30192 10.0 flat 03:59 30193 2.0 arc 04:08 30194 2.1 arc 04:11 30195 2.1 arc 04:25 30196 2.2 arc 04:27 30197 2.2 arc 04:35 30198 10.0 flat 04:38 30199 2.0 arc 05:08 30200 1500.1 target ----- sequence 30201, plate 2069 ------- 15.1 11.3 15.4 11.4 DONE 05:35 30201 10.0 flat 05:37 30202 2.0 arc 06:12 30203 1800.1 target ----- sequence 30204, plate 2078 ------- 22.9 15.2 12.1 20.2 06:27 30204 10.0 flat 06:29 30205 2.0 arc 06:57 30206 1200.1 target 07:19 30207 1200.1 target 07:39 30208 698.0 target 07:48 30209 10.0 flat 07:50 30210 2.0 arc ----- sequence 30211, plate 1761 ------- 13.5 10.4 13.4 11.4 DONE 10:54 30211 10.0 flat 10:56 30212 2.0 arc 11:19 30213 900.1 target 11:42 30214 1200.1 target ----- sequence 30215, plate 1751 ------- 12:40 30215 900.2 target 12:58 30216 900.1 target 13:03 30217 10.0 flat 13:05 30218 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 04:50Z 2 2042 246.79 -0.0011 48.40 -0.0033 98.13 0.0021 1.000110 05:45Z 3 2069 -50.73 -0.0001 44.54 -0.0022 139.30 -0.0145 1.000020 06:43Z 7 2078 50.88 -0.0015 73.39 -0.0004 224.46 0.0134 1.000130 11:04Z 8 1761 29.24 0.0002 69.84 0.0036 205.04 0.0132 0.999950 12:29Z 5 1751 -51.30 -0.0008 63.12 0.0002 137.30 -0.0114 1.000140 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8246 Stays: JL8247 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:57Z 6 2085 1.00000 0 1256 0 121 30.4 -6.4 13 300 04:49Z 2 2042 1.00011 -1086 636 350 247 48.5 -6.1 8 353 -- 2.0 04:59Z 2 2042 1.00011 -1086 573 280 246 46.6 -6.1 9 327 -- 1.6 05:45Z 3 2069 1.00002 -198 1266 230 -51 44.6 -6.5 12 329 -- 1.5 06:42Z 7 2078 1.00013 -1284 244 180 51 73.3 -6.2 12 328 -- 1.8 11:03Z 8 1761 0.99995 494 1665 125 29 69.8 -3.3 8 272 -- 1.4 12:29Z 5 1751 1.00014 -1383 125 125 -51 63.2 -3.7 8 262 -- 1.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:10Z 21 15 15 286 (WNW) -9999 -
