APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday January 15, 2005 (MJD 53386) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinski night: Pete Newman, Scot Kleinman Visiting gourmets: John Barentine Russet McMillan Atsuko Nitta Kleinman and her magical bag of AAS freebies ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Gourmet Night Menu: ------------------- Tortillas and Roasted Eggplant Dip Chicken and Cheese Quesadillas Cream of Roasted Tomato Soup Red Chile Stew Fancy Green Salad Fresh Pears and Grapes Science Night Menu: ------------------- Mostly photometric, but marginal and variable seeing means 8 plates done! Random minor guider problems- details in log and problems. Many max/bad sky-residual SOS warnings. (Spaceweather.com issued an aurora alert due to two CMEs. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- Done, spectrographs were focused at temp. 3.8 C. No problems to report. Night: ------ We started with cart 3 plate 2068 (SEGUE faint). We had a few more weird guider problems. Nothing serious, but see the Problems section for details. We disabled fiber11 for guiding because the position cross was far off from the star. This, despite having a new guider dark made last night. We continue to see max sky residual errors - around 9000Ang. SoS called for a midCalib, so we did one before the final exposure, which was a bonus exposure because of a gap in the available plates we were trying to bridge. A little extra signal to noise never hurt anyone, did it? ;) Finished with 5 more exposures added to previous data. 03:41Z Next up cart 7 plate 1872 (survey, priority 2). GSOTGTF, but we needed an additional guiderFlat because the old fibers weren't fully within the boxes. This time, we had to disable fibers 9 and 11 for similar reasons as fiber 11 above. Done in 4 exposures. 05:08Z Next: cart 9 plate 1783 (survey, priority 2). GSOTGTF. This time, we disabled fibers 5 and 2. Why are the hot pixels moving so much? A sample frame, 855, was copied to the same place as the earlier frames (see Problems). Done in 3 exposures. 06:22Z Next cart 4 plate 1941 (main survey) GSOTGTF. A guider image failed to arrive in the middle of a guiderFocus sweep, taking down (as it is designed to) the TCC connection. Pete re-started it and carried on. Done in 3 exposures (with more max-sky residual SoS warnings.) 07:43Z Next up cart 6 plate 1970 (main survey). GSOTGTF, but fiber 1, this time, needed disabling. Sample frame #1147 in the same place as the others. Another focusSweep resulted in another guider image failing to arrive. Done in 3 exposures. 09:01Z Next - cart 5, plate 1755. GSOTGTF and all guideFibers are good. More max-sky residual warnings here. Done in 3 exposures. 10:14Z Next cart 1 plate 1943. GSOTGTF, but we needed a second guiderFlat. All guideFibers OK. More max sky-residuals warnings from SoS. Done in 3 exposures. 11:27Z Next - cart 8 plate 1624. GSOTGTF, but we needed to use a -simple guiderMon to get a guider display working. More max-sky residual warnings. Done in 3 exposures, but we added a 4th since twilight was nigh. endNight still running as this log is being finished. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5110 22:11Z 22:47Z 100 O 157.42 166.60 42 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 30538, plate -9999 ------- 22:07 30538 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30539, plate 2068 ------- 22:50 30539 0.0 bias 22:58 30540 10.0 flat 23:10 30541 2.0 arc 23:14 30542 2.1 arc 23:16 30543 2.1 arc 23:29 30544 2.1 arc 23:32 30545 2.1 arc ----- sequence 30546, plate -9999 ------- 23:56 30546 0.0 bias 00:29 30547 0.0 bias ----- sequence 30548, plate 2068 ------- 01:30 30548 10.0 flat 01:33 30549 2.0 arc 01:57 30550 1200.1 target 02:20 30551 1200.1 target 02:42 30552 1200.1 target 03:05 30553 1200.1 target 03:08 30554 10.0 flat 03:11 30555 2.0 arc 03:35 30556 1200.1 target DONE ----- sequence 30557, plate 1872 ------- 03:47 30557 10.0 flat 03:49 30558 2.0 arc 04:08 30559 900.1 target 04:26 30560 900.1 target 04:44 30561 900.1 target 05:01 30562 900.1 target DONE ----- sequence 30563, plate 1783 ------- 05:10 30563 10.0 flat 05:13 30564 2.0 arc 05:36 30565 1100.1 target 05:54 30566 900.1 target 06:14 30567 1000.1 target DONE ----- sequence 30568, plate 1941 ------- 06:32 30568 10.0 flat 06:34 30569 2.0 arc 06:55 30570 900.1 target 07:13 30571 900.1 target 07:36 30572 1200.2 target DONE ----- sequence 30573, plate 1970 ------- 07:55 30573 10.0 flat 07:57 30574 2.0 arc 08:22 30575 1200.1 target 08:38 30576 800.1 target 08:54 30577 800.1 target DONE ----- sequence 30578, plate 1755 ------- 09:08 30578 10.0 flat 09:11 30579 2.0 arc 09:31 30580 900.1 target 09:49 30581 900.1 target 10:05 30582 800.1 target DONE ----- sequence 30583, plate 1943 ------- 10:17 30583 10.0 flat 10:20 30584 2.0 arc 10:40 30585 900.1 target 10:58 30586 900.1 target 11:18 30587 1020.2 target DONE ----- sequence 30588, plate 1624 ------- 11:35 30588 10.0 flat 11:37 30589 2.0 arc 11:58 30590 900.1 target 12:19 30591 1100.1 target 12:41 30592 1100.1 target 12:59 30593 900.1 target DONE ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:17Z 3 2068 31.01 0.0012 53.09 0.0021 205.58 0.0047 1.000150 02:19Z 3 2068 4.60 0.0012 57.14 0.0021 183.78 0.0047 1.000100 05:18Z 9 1783 142.90 0.0005 54.96 0.0030 -64.87 -0.0072 1.000220 06:40Z 4 1941 96.23 -0.0005 62.72 0.0027 258.62 -0.0019 1.000190 08:03Z 6 1970 115.25 0.0017 52.34 0.0016 -93.61 0.0074 1.000180 09:15Z 5 1755 58.06 -0.0019 60.65 0.0024 227.43 -0.0033 1.000290 09:31Z 5 1755 52.49 -0.0019 63.32 0.0024 223.50 -0.0033 1.000250 10:23Z 1 1943 264.85 0.0014 71.93 0.0025 96.46 0.0037 1.000210 11:43Z 8 1624 -7.15 -0.0015 64.52 0.0014 173.83 0.0000 1.000170 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8269 Stays: JL8268 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:17Z 3 2068 1.00015 -1480 40 95 31 53.1 2.9 13 14 gdr 1.7 02:24Z 3 2068 1.00010 -988 422 80 2 57.2 3.1 19 28 gdr 1.3 05:18Z 9 1783 1.00022 -2171 -562 70 143 54.9 3.4 5 358 gdr 1.6 06:40Z 4 1941 1.00019 -1875 -367 40 96 62.7 2.9 6 8 gdr 1.5 08:03Z 6 1970 1.00018 -1776 -207 90 115 52.2 2.5 10 29 gdr 2.0 08:10Z 6 1970 1.00018 -1776 -211 90 115 53.6 2.5 8 34 gdr 1.6 09:15Z 5 1755 1.00029 -2863 -1130 90 58 60.6 2.1 5 88 gdr 1.6 09:31Z 5 1755 1.00025 -2468 -808 90 53 63.3 3.2 1 127 gdr 1.5 10:24Z 1 1943 1.00021 -2073 -499 90 265 71.9 2.9 2 123 gdr 1.6 11:43Z 8 1624 1.00017 -1678 -158 90 -7 64.5 2.9 1 149 gdr 1.3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:01Z 39 -3 4 280 (W) -9999 -
