APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday January 16, 2005 (MJD 53387) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Scot Kleinman Mother of Dimm: Steph Snedden Night: Atsuko Nitta Mike Harvanek ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- o Finished 3 plates, and got good exposure on one. o Imaged 21N from -68 --> -0.2 o endNight is running as this log is sent out. o Congratulations to Jim for Henry Norris Russell Lectureship! o Scot fixed the switch of the lavaLamp. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout was all done by Scot. Thanks. Given the moon, we decided to start with Cart 3 Plate 2041 SEGUE bright. We put tis cartridge on before sunset. The best party favor of San Diego AAS meeting was the flashing pin. Did you all know that it said "IoP"? Steph came in to check DIMM. She reseated cables in the lower enclosure and the handpaddle and all is well. 00:20Z Open! Mike changed imager dewar after opening. Atsuko checked the new DIMM procedure Steph with help from Mike prepared. Steph has not renamed DIMM yet to some positive sounding one. Cart 3 Plate 2041 SEGUE ======================== The weather looks good for spectro. Photometric but moony (half moon). End of last night, Scot did telstop and telrun just in case the guider problems were related to some TCC connection, orphan processes. This seemed not to have any affect since... 01:08Z While doing guider focus, we saw guider frame not arrive in time message. The related guider frame is copied to phoenix:/data/photo/guiderproblems gimg0265-0267 are copied. The error came up when 0265 was displayed on the saoMon. First exposure showed that we are getting lots of whopping fibers, sky residual warnings and the sky values in yellow. b1 is getting S/N of 1.1 while b2 is getting 8.2. we will call the exposure good as long as b2 gets good S/N. Both r1 and r2 are getting 5.5 and 6.3 which are good. Please see the PROBLEM section for a sample of the warnings given by SoS. Part of the warning might be coming from the aurora. spaceweather.com has an "AURORA ALERT". The third science exposure did not get as much signal as the second although the seeing has not changed, the wind has not changed and the efficiency meter was showing similar efficiency. We found this out while we were doing the postCalib. The forth exposure taken after postCalib finished the plate. Cart 7 Plate 2050 SEGUE ======================== fk5 required. Again, we are getting very low s/n in b1 again and we are getting many whopping fiberes, scattered light, bad sky residuals etc. The apoplotsky plot shows, I think, more than usual emission lines. Aurora?? FIY the Aurora warning in SoS has not been triggered.) 3.5m alerted us that DIMM's www site is showing errors on the Telescope time vs. laptop time. 22:09:01 ERROR: Telescope time 1/14/2005 22:09:01 22:09:01 ERROR: Computer time: 1/16/2005 22:09:01 We have synced the telescope and computer at the beginning of the night. Since the function of the DIMM does not seem to be affected, Atsuko decided not to do anything about it for now. Tomorrow night, we will be syncing the telescope and laptop time again. We got 2/3 of the way done with this plate. Cart 9 Plate 1935 SDSS ===================== fk5 without previous offset found the stars. The moon is setting and now we only have one max sky-residual error in SoS. 06:40Z Steph called to help us fix the DIMM date. This fixed the error messages on the APO weather page. We learned that syncing the time has nothing to do with the date. We have to manually tell the local date in the telescope setting section. 3 science exposures finished this plate. Cart 4 Plate 1945 =================== Stars on gotoField. We finished this plate in 3 exposures. postCalib message came in too late. The seeing is good, the sky is photometric, the moon is gone so we put the imager on! (The first time imager is on the telescope this dark run!) 07:59Z Run 5112 21N start lambda=-69 ------------------------------ We left the offset calibs in since we did not know if it will work for us or against us (it depends on how good the pointing model of the month is). The first skippy showed that our nuErr is at 6.9". While getting ready, we passed the start of ramp, so we backed up. There was a AZ correction too large fiducial, but we crossed many good fiducials before we reached our destination. Frame 26 Longitude -68.7 Good from here. Frame 58 Longitude -63.9 Start of science skyL (09:03:23Z 2005-01-17 ccd45:) Aurora? Or nebula? The sky seems to have been climbing. 09:32Z Scot fixed the lavalamp switch which has been flaky for a while. ccd45 sky level is no longer climbing, but going up and down. The level is high enough to trigger the watcher error. Frame 336 dewar2 r shows a BEAUTIFUL BIG galaxy. It is a face-on spiral with a bit of a bar. John Barentine found out that the galaxy is NGC3344. 11:30Z The humidity rose slightly and the seeing also. The wind is still low. Maybe a herd of deer sneezed? 12:44Z Frame 483 Longitude -0.2 end of Drift. Seeing was good from the beginning until the end. 12:46Z Run 5112 bias on the telescope --------------------------------------- 35 frames bias on the telescope. 13:15Z Closed. We did instChange inside the enclosure (and we did remember to do the startfillsesq after the imager was inside the doghouse). endNight is running. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe
