APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday May 31, 2005 (MJD 53522) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Atsuko Nitta Kleinman Visitor: French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We took advantage of a nice, clear, photometric night to do extensive imaging and an hour of spectroscopy right at the end. Finished Stripe 17S (-24 < lambda < +16) and part of 39N (+17 < lambda < +36) before moonrise. Finished the night with two science exposures on SEGUE Plate 2181. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- We are Stephless for checkout (find us new observers, Steph!) Checkout went fine. No changes were made to spectro focus; see Problems section for details. I did notice that the fill line leading to sp2 from its dewar was leaking a bit of nitrogen at the quick disconnect. See Problems. Night ----- It was clear and photometric near sunset, so we put the imager on the telescope. During twilight we got an on-telescope bias (Run 5359) which appears good. 03:10Z Run 5360 (Stripe 17S, startLambda=-38) We began well before the ramp since end of twilight was still 30 minutes away. Seeing was very good to start with --- DIMM reported values consistently near 0.5 arcsec. Science began at lambda=-24, but skippy was happy and we were in focus well before the ramp (by frame 55). Seeing was in spec throughout except for the first 49 frames which seeingRun called bad apparently because of the first several frames being in bright twilight. We believe all of the frames past 25 are good, though that extends well before the ramp. (Run 5361 was labeled "ignore" because we did the scanStripe incorrectly by giving it the wrong startLambda for the beginning of science.) 07:05Z Run 5362 (Stripe 39N, startLambda=+13.5) In focus from the beginning of the run, skippy happy by frame 10. Seeing was in spec throughout the run. We knew the moon was going to rise before we finished the stripe, so we looked for moonrise affecting the data by montoring sky levels in astroline. Moonrise occurred at about Frame 158 by time, but we did not see an enhancement in sky levels until about 30 minutes after moonrise (Frame 204) at which we ended the drift. We declared the run "good" such that it would all get reduced. Please advise as to how much of the run is considered acceptable. Skippy picked up an exceedingly large value of muErr when run on Frame 159 for 4 frames -- maybe we ran over a moth? -- but this was the only odd value. See Skippy section for complete details. Incidentally, for future reference, at what sky levels ought we to quit? Was our strategy valid, or will all the post-moonrise data be discarded? 09:10Z Run 5363 (Stripe 39N, startLambda=44.5) Monthly imager donuts for 22 frames. Focus values (approximate) are -400 at Frame 10, -700 at Frame 15, and -100 at Frame 20. Data have been transferred to phoenix for JEG. 09:17Z Run 5364 (On-telescope bias) Switched to spectroscopy for the last ~1 hour of the night. 09:52Z Cart 1 Plate 2181 (tile 8053, segue117). GSOGTF. Seeing was still very good -- with some focus tweaks, we got the seeing measurements in all of the guide fibers to bottom out at 0.98 arcsec (DIMM was reading 0.6 arcsec at the time). This plate was recorded as "0" in SoS (see Problems section). We obtained two science exposures on this plate which took us right up to the start of twilight and a few minutes beyond. This provided enough signal to consider the plate finished, but we need an additional exposure so we left this plate on the telescope. Closed up for the night at 10:45Z. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame It's not an especially large amount of liquid but the dripping is continuous during a fill. Just an observation that seemed unusual. Plate 2181 Checks Out --------------------- SoS called this "Plate 0" despite a successful loadCartridge and a correct tileId and cartridge number. The plate was also recorded as "0" in the image headers. We had to use postfix to change the header information, but the misidentification created a problem for spectro QA. We were unable to pull up spectra in IDL ("No science exposures for plate 2181"). QA up through visual inspection of science frames was done with nothing evidently awry.
