APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday July 6, 2005 (MJD 53558) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington John Barentine ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Had clouds during part of the night. But, finished plates 2207 and 2248. Got some singal on plates 1806 and 2202. Had a SOS problem; see log. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout ------------------- The afternoon checkout was uneventful. The spectro focus was checked but not adjusted. Night ------------------- The clouds somewhat cleared at sunset, so we pulled the enclosure. 02:42Z Cart 02, plate 1806 (chunk94). We had to use spiralPattern to find the field. Seeing is about 2" and variable. We completed three exposures but could not declare this plate done. 05:16Z Cart 03, plate 2207 (chunk116). We had guide stars on goToField. This plate was declared done when tonight's SN^2 was added to latst night's; see below. MJD b1 r1 b2 r2 53558 11.3 10.2 13.5 13.1 53557 4.5 4.4 5.1 4.7 ------------------------------- total 15.8 14.6 18.6 17.8 06:09Z Cart 06, plate 2202 (chunk116). We had guide stars on goToField. Although we had a problem with SOS, two exposures were completed. Plate was not declared done however. SoS quit progress on reducing exposures after 33305 (the arc from the first preCalib) and did not update results for 33305 in camera b2. Attempts at forcing the reduction and an update with sos_redo gave the following output: REMOVE2REDO: Selecting MJD=53558 REMOVE2REDO: Trying to lock the logfile /data/spectro/spectrologs/53558/logfile-53558.fits At this point the process would hang. We consulted Folklore, which suggested forcing SoS to try reducing the data by issuing an sos_stop, deleting the affected data from SoS, then an sos_start to restart the cron job that copies data over from host. We did this and verified that the cron job had stopped using the sos_status command. However, monitoring SoS progress with a "tail -f /data/spectro/spectrologs/sos.log" command on observer@sos showed that no processing was taking place. Next we thought to kill the aporsync and startapo jobs that were already running, thinking that was the source of the problem, and that the SoS cron job would start new ones. This indeed happened, and copying of files from host to sos commenced. We then tried forcing another sos_redo, with the same complaint about "Trying to lock the logfile..." Clearly locking was the issue. In /data/d1/spectro/spectrologs/53558 we found this file entry: lrwxrwxrwx 1 observer dss 50 Jul 7 01:15 logfile-53558.html.lock -> /data/spectro/spectrologs/53558/logfile-53558.html I deleted this pointer file (the .lock file, not logfile-53558.html!) and within seconds we finally had an updating SoS web page. 07:15Z We had clouds. 09:54Z Cart 05, plate 2248 (segue121). After the clouds moved on, we found guide stars on goToField. Plate was declared done when tonight's SN^2 was added to a previous MJD's; see below. We put a little extra signal on this plate since we had a few minutes before the night was done. MJD b1 b2 53557 13.5 11.8 53558 7.9 7.5 ------------------ Total 21.4 19.3 endNight finished and was happy. Misc Watcher messages are posted in the Problems Section. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5434 23:01Z 23:52Z 100 O -20.43 -7.78 38 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): y QA Procedures Done (y/n): y UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33290, plate 2251 ------- 23:02 33290 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33291, plate -9999 ------- 23:09 33291 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33291, plate 2251 ------- 23:15 33292 10.0 flat 23:17 33293 2.0 arc ----- sequence 33294, plate 1806 ------- 03:45 33294 10.0 flat 03:47 33295 2.0 arc 04:06 33296 900.1 target 04:30 33297 1200.1 target 05:03 33298 1800.1 target ----- sequence 33299, plate 2207 ------- 05:16 33299 10.0 flat 05:18 33300 2.0 arc 05:42 33301 1200.1 target 06:00 33302 900.1 target ----- sequence 33303, plate 2202 ------- 06:28 33303 900.1 target 06:32 33304 10.0 flat 06:34 33305 2.0 arc 06:53 33306 900.1 target 06:57 33307 10.0 flat 06:59 33308 2.0 arc 07:33 33309 900.1 target ----- sequence 33310, plate 2248 ------- 09:52 33310 10.0 flat 09:55 33311 2.0 arc 10:32 33312 1500.1 target 10:35 33313 10.0 flat 10:37 33314 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:54Z 2 1806 -55.94 0.0026 53.88 0.0060 135.02 0.0134 1.000240 05:15Z 3 2207 -32.57 0.0060 71.90 0.0067 151.61 0.0194 1.000180 06:12Z 6 2202 -58.99 0.0031 59.48 0.0072 131.86 0.0133 1.000180 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8740 Stays: JL8742 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:53Z 2 1806 1.00024 -2369 -868 -75 -56 54.0 17.3 15 154 gdr 1.9 05:13Z 3 2207 1.00018 -1776 -593 -250 -31 72.2 18.3 14 181 gdr 1.5 06:11Z 6 2202 1.00018 -1776 -538 -220 -59 59.6 18.6 22 185 gdr 1.3 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:57Z 78 33 10 264 (W) 643 - 23:27Z 76 32 15 251 (WSW) 732 - 23:57Z 75 32 8 272 (W) 714 - 00:27Z 75 34 17 235 (SW) 719 - 00:57Z 74 33 14 215 (SW) 683 - 01:28Z 72 32 7 246 (WSW) 850 - 01:58Z 68 37 8 177 (S) 857 - 02:28Z 65 40 13 133 (SE) 1103 - 02:58Z 63 39 16 128 (SE) 984 - 03:29Z 63 38 18 151 (SSE) 822 - 03:59Z 63 37 12 142 (SE) 749 - 04:29Z 67 34 16 177 (S) 912 - 05:00Z 65 36 20 178 (S) 856 - 05:32Z 64 35 18 192 (SSW) 753 - 06:02Z 65 35 21 182 (S) 788 - 06:33Z 65 35 19 200 (SSW) 859 - 07:04Z 65 35 23 186 (S) 851 - 07:34Z 65 34 23 181 (S) 950 - 08:05Z 64 34 18 207 (SSW) 905 - 08:37Z 64 34 16 207 (SSW) 808 - 09:07Z 63 34 12 202 (SSW) 859 - 09:37Z 63 34 12 178 (S) 846 - 10:07Z 61 34 7 181 (S) 796 - 10:38Z 62 34 10 196 (SSW) 803 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:50Z Doors cracked, louvers opened, fans on 02:41Z Enclosure off 10:59Z Enclosure on, fans off Telescope at 121,30,00 mount LN2 connected and turned on Spectros were forced filled.
