APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday July 7, 2005 (MJD 53559) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Howard Brewington John Barentine Visitors: Steph Snedden Kaike Pan (interviewee) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Cloudy for most of the night. We finished one plate (1806) and obtained signal on two others (2202 and 2259). ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon --------- No issues during checkout. Spectro focus looked good so we made no changes. Night ----- Mostly clear at sunset with low clouds off to the northwest, winds light, humidity low. We were open and cooling at 02:20Z, starting with spectro. 03:15Z Cart 2 Plate 1806 (tile 1318, chunk94). We begin with (S/N)^2=12.8 on this plate, so one science exposure ought to finish it. No GSOGTF but an fk5InFiber number 10 found it. Finished in one exposure. 04:06Z Cart 6 Plate 2202 (tile 1586, chunk116). GSOGTF. This plate already has a (S/N)^2 of 6.4 on it, so we imagine two exposures will finish it. After the first exposure read out we began to get clouds; by the start of the second science exposure the clouds were thick enough to pause, then abort, the science exposure. Returns nearby on radar began to scare us, so we closed up at 04:50Z. We think the laptop at the 2.5m is standing on something less than a full set of legs. When we went down to close we found the laptop locked up with a blank screen, unresponsive to keyboard commands or moves of the mouse. To recover required a power cycle reboot. This has happened on two other occasions in the past week, none fortunately at night when it might be critical... By 08:30Z things seemed to at last be clearing up. We gave it a few more minutes to make sure we weren't about to be bamboozled by the weather gods, then changed cartridges and opened the building. 08:55Z Cart 4 Plate 2259 (seguefaint122). GSOGTF. Fiber 10 turned out to have a nice double star -- not so nice for guiding, so we disabled that fiber. Seeing had degraded given the wind's executive decision to take a hard turn to the southeast and pick up to about 20MPH. We got in one good science exposure before the clouds rolled in again. The clouds were unforgiving and we finally called it when twilight began. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5435 23:11Z 23:32Z 100 O -16.90 -11.80 43 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33315, plate -9999 ------- 23:14 33315 0.0 bias 23:19 33316 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33317, plate 1806 ------- 23:26 33317 10.0 flat 23:28 33318 2.0 arc 23:35 33319 10.0 flat ----- sequence 33320, plate -9999 ------- 23:58 33320 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33320, plate 1806 ------- 5.8 4.5 6.7 6.8 DONE w/ previous 03:31 33321 10.0 flat signal 03:33 33322 2.0 arc 03:54 33323 900.1 target ----- sequence 33324, plate 2202 ------- 5.4 4.4 5.3 5.4 04:12 33324 10.0 flat 04:14 33325 2.0 arc 04:33 33326 900.1 target ----- sequence 33327, plate 2259 ------- 6.4 6.4 6.6 6.5 09:10 33327 10.0 flat 09:13 33328 2.0 arc 09:38 33329 1200.1 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:39Z 2 1806 -52.45 0.0020 55.80 0.0058 137.42 0.0083 1.000070 09:19Z 4 2259 -25.25 0.0045 71.47 0.0063 157.99 0.0101 1.000070 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL8743 Stays: JL8744 ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 03:39Z 2 2202 1.00007 -691 351 -240 -53 55.8 20.9 5 273 -- 1.1 09:19Z 4 2259 1.00007 -691 457 -100 -25 71.5 17.1 16 126 -- 1.9 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:06Z 75 23 14 263 (W) 587 - PtlyCldy 23:37Z 77 24 11 262 (W) 508 - MstlyClr 00:09Z 74 21 12 268 (W) 513 - MstlyClr 00:42Z 75 21 17 273 (W) 473 - MstlyClr 01:14Z 72 21 6 318 (NW) 460 - MstlyClr 01:46Z 71 21 4 301 (WNW) 514 - MstlyClr 02:18Z 70 20 4 349 (NNW) 536 - MstlyClr 03:15Z 70 20 4 277 (W) 600 - MstlyClr 03:46Z 69 21 3 264 (W) 596 - PtlyCldy 04:19Z 68 21 1 238 (WSW) 599 - PtlyCldy 04:51Z 69 21 3 205 (SSW) 596 - MstlyCldy 05:24Z 67 23 9 346 (NNW) 677 - MstlyCldy 05:56Z 67 27 7 104 (ESE) 610 - MstlyCldy 06:28Z 66 27 3 126 (SE) 597 - MstlyCldy 07:00Z 66 26 7 108 (ESE) 616 - MstlyCldy 07:33Z 68 25 3 157 (SSE) 607 - MstlyCldy 08:05Z 64 30 8 113 (ESE) 675 - MstlyCldy 08:37Z 64 32 14 144 (SE) 723 - PtlyCldy 09:11Z 63 37 20 131 (SE) 874 - PtlyCldy 09:43Z 63 39 21 135 (SE) 1015 - MstlyCldy 10:15Z 64 35 16 125 (SE) 819 - MstlyCldy ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 02:20Z Fans and blowers on, louvers open, enclosure off 04:50Z Enclosure on, doors half-open, fans left on 08:50Z Enclosure off 10:25Z Enclosure on, doors and louvers closed, fans and blowers off Telescope parked at 121,30 with Cart 4 (Plate 2259) mounted Counterwights at 250 Spectro autofill reconnected No interlocks bypassed Dewar weights at 10:35Z Imager: 213lbs 22psi Spectro: 136lbs 13psi (force-fill in progress) ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: v3_149_0 Watcher: v2_30_0 MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v2_47_0 AstroDa: v14_47 TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v2_02 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A 0.5500 0.5770 Axial B 0.5930 0.5880 Axial C 0.9850 0.9460 Trans D -8.1860 -8.1960 Lateral E 10.0457 10.0330 Lateral F 11.5951 11.5951 GALILS Commanded: 4300. -1900. 2850. -13300. -7600. -7650.
