APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Friday September 2, 2005 (MJD 53616) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek K. night: John Barentine, Mike Harvanek, Kaike Pan support: Steph Snedden, Eric Neilsen (phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Supernova Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We imaged a lengthy part of Stripe 82 N tonight for the supernova folks in average seeing conditions. Eric assisted in troubleshooting problems with astrom and the PT. Also we found what looked like an oil leak from the enclosure motor on the north wall in a location on the floor near its position when the building is parked. The fluid doesn't actually seem to have an oily consistency. Can one of the engineers please check this out? ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- DA are working fine. Imager and spectro biases were read out without problem. Guider camera: -------------- gcam doread 0 0 W Modu="cmd_GetGCamCtrSize"; Text="predicted FWHM < 1 binned pixel for axis 1; setting to 1" 0 0 W Modu="cmd_GetGCamCtrSize"; Text="predicted FWHM < 1 binned pixel for axis 2; setting to 1" 0 8 > Started; Text="command queued"; Cmd="gcam doread" 0 8 I Text="command executing" 0 0 F Modu="prt_LockDev"; Text="device not available: TCC_GCAM" 0 8 F Text="could not obtain guide camera device lock" gcam doread is not working. Steph however was able to run gcam doread command without a problem. Then Jurek also was able to get guider camera command working. Maybe Craig was doing something with the cron job, when problems occured? Watcher interlocks seems to go back and forth from the mode "I can see the world" to "I see nothing". When we started a socond watcher on sdsshost2 all interlock buttons were diplayed in red (the same happened with the other watchers but the first one). spectrographs are in focus (see the problems section for details). Night: ------ Things looked promising around sunset but then clouds moved in shortly thereafter. Cleared again toward 02:00Z but there were still radar returns in the area so we held off on opening. We mounted the imager shortly before 03:00Z as the sky remained clear; humidity rose to about 80% and held. Took a bias on the telescope while we waited on a decision to open. We opened at 03:15Z. Began with SN imaging of Stripe 82 N. 03:35Z Run 5565 (Stripe 82 N, startLambda=119) In focus by frame 22, but we had a problem: skippy wouldn't return any output. We tried invoking skippy from within iop, from astrom, and in logTool and did not get any response. We called Eric at home. While he troubleshot, clouds began to form directly overhead. By 04:00Z the sky was full of clouds. Eric worked on a new version of astrom to fix the problems while we waited out the clouds. We ended the drift at frame 58. Once we got skippy to run, we found that our pointing during this run was not good. Sky started clearing near 05:00Z and in consultation with Eric, who got things working for us again, we decided to start imaging again. We applied the corrections skippy asked for before we went on to the next imaging start position. 05:09Z Run 5566 (Stripe 82 N, startLambda=141) Skippy happy from the beginning of the scan. We had to start a little further along in Lambda because the UT time advanced while we were troubleshooting. In focus by frame 27. Got some more clouds around 05:25Z but we trudged on. Clouds came and went over the next few hours, but in no case was it bad enough for us to end the scan or consider closing. We completed the scan to Lambda=-125. Closed for the night at 11:40Z ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5563 21:23Z 21:53Z 100 O 12.13 19.60 64 ignore 5564 02:47Z 03:07Z 100 O 93.29 98.31 47 bias 5565 03:34Z 04:06Z 82 N 119.46 127.42 66 science 5566 05:08Z 11:23Z 82 N 141.39 -124.72 641 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5565 10 1 28 -5.500 0.168 7.400 0.162 0.09701 155 55 5565 15 1 25 -5.700 0.112 7.400 0.146 0.09771 155 55 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): no UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 33759, plate -9999 ------- 23:48 33759 0.0 bias ----- sequence 33760, plate 2260 ------- 00:00 33760 0.0 bias 00:06 33761 10.0 flat 00:08 33762 2.0 arc 00:23 33763 2.1 arc 00:25 33764 2.1 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== DATA TAPE SUMMARY ===--- Goes: JL Stays: JL ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:00Z 8 0 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 30.0 12.1 13 83 -- 1.5 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 22:22Z 60 46 9 224 (SW) -9999 - PtlyCldy 22:53Z 63 47 9 206 (SSW) -9999 - PtlyCldy 23:25Z 60 45 7 190 (S) -9999 - PtlyCldy 23:57Z 59 45 5 169 (S) -9999 - PtlyCldy 00:31Z 57 43 6 138 (SE) -9999 - PtlyCldy 01:39Z 54 43 9 103 (ESE) -9999 - MstlyClr 02:11Z 53 46 14 85 (E) -9999 - MstlyClr 02:44Z 52 46 16 78 (ENE) -9999 - MstlyClr 03:14Z 51 45 17 84 (E) -9999 - MstlyClr 03:44Z 51 43 15 85 (E) -9999 - PtlyCldy 04:16Z 52 40 16 106 (ESE) -9999 - MstlyCldy 04:48Z 52 38 19 102 (ESE) -9999 - PtlyCldy 05:21Z 51 39 17 76 (ENE) -9999 - PtlyCldy 05:52Z 51 39 17 108 (ESE) -9999 - MstlyClr 06:25Z 51 40 13 94 (E) -9999 - PtlyCldy 06:57Z 50 40 15 83 (E) -9999 - MstlyClr 07:29Z 51 41 18 113 (ESE) -9999 - PtlyCldy 08:00Z 51 43 13 96 (E) -9999 - MstlyClr 08:33Z 50 43 8 94 (E) -9999 - MstlyClr 09:06Z 50 42 9 86 (E) -9999 - MstlyClr 09:38Z 49 42 8 108 (ESE) -9999 - MstlyClr 10:10Z 50 41 8 91 (E) -9999 - MstlyClr 10:42Z 51 35 3 91 (E) -9999 - MstlyClr 11:14Z 51 37 7 84 (E) -9999 - MstlyClr 11:46Z 52 28 9 126 (SE) -9999 - MstlyClr 12:19Z 53 22 11 128 (SE) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:00Z Fans and blowers on, louvers open 03:15Z Enclosure off 11:40Z Enclosure on, louvers and doors closed Telescope parked at 121,30 with Cart 8 (Plate 2260) mounted No interlocks bypassed Counterweights at 245 Spectro autofill reconnected Dewar weights at 12:10Z Imager: 258lbs 20psi Spectro: 138lbs 18psi (filling) ---=== SOFTWARE USED ===--- IOP/SOP: iop Watcher: watcher MCP: v5_26_0 TPM: tpm_v3_0_0 AstroDa: biery TCC: TCC 2.7.2.1 August 6 2004 sdssProcedures: v2_03 SoS: v4_10_7 hoggPT: v1_6_9 plate-mapper: v4_3_1 ---=== MIRROR NUMBERS ===--- PRIMARY: -------- Scale: 1.000000 MIGS TONIGHT NOMINAL Axial A -5.8430 -5.8440 Axial B -5.6770 -5.6770 Axial C 0.9420 0.9420 Trans D -9.9930 -9.9940 Lateral E 10.3759 10.3759 Lateral F 11.9380 11.9380 GALILS Commanded: 4700. -2450. 3000. -7800. 3300. 3000.
