APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday September 11, 2005 (MJD 53625) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- swing: Jurek Krzesinksi night: Mike Harvanek, John Barentine Rick Kessler (Mr. SN) support: Connie Rockosi (by phone) visitor: Brigitte Kessler ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We've got a file owner problem and NFS problem this afternoon. See the Afternoon checkout. We imaged 82 S for 324 frames from lambda +110.5 to +157.8 (ramps included) in excellent seeing and photometric conditions but with some moon. Note that skippy doesn't give reliable values for SN scans unless lambda is greater than about +116. We imaged 79 S for around 180 good frames (frame 9 to 188, lambda +158.6 to -174.5, ramps included). This portion of the drift was obtained in excellent seeing and photometric conditons with no moon. The remainder of the drift (the last 25 frames) was taken in clouds. It was photometric from about 02:40Z to 08:18Z. The rest of the night was lost to clouds. Tonight was some of the best seeing we've ever had. Watcher was complaining that the seeing was too good (0.74"). At one point we counted 22 chips with sub arcsecond seeing. sp1 appeared to lose a power supply but it turned out that it was probably just a communication glitch. The dimm computer needed to be power cycled before it was brought up. We got it working before twilight ended. The seeing values did not show up on the web page until very late (about 10:00Z). We put compressor #2 back on-line at 10:50Z. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon checkout: ------------------- When trying to end the drift I got a strange error: im> endDrift 2005-09-11 23:46:45Z: Error stopping focus loop: couldn't open "/astrolog/53625/focus-53625.par": Permission denied 2005-09-11 23:46:52Z: stopping drift with: iccExec id1 id2 id3 id4 id5 id6 ad1 ad2 ad3 ad4 readoutEnd Why? Well I ssh to sdssfiles1, then went to the /data/spectro directory and did: ls -l. and were able to load the plate. ------------------------------------------- Spectrograps checked with bias and are in focus, guider works, imager bias taken, the telescope is ready. Night: ------ High humidity delayed opening so we took an on-telescope bias (run 5595) in the closed up, darkened enclosure. The archiver started complaining early and often. Along with complaints of no gang transfer (on a bias) we got multiple warnings of dsc E archWrFail Error archiving frame 5595 34.32: Failed to close file 13 (dsc_E_archWrFail Error archiving frame 5595 34.32: Failed to close file 13 : 2005-09-12 02:02:48Z ) and TEXTONLY *** FATAL *** dscArch: While writing frames - 1 (TEXTONLY *** FATAL *** dscArch: While writing frames - 1 : 2005-09-12 02:02:48Z ) The humidity was in the upper 70s but stable so we decided to open. However, clouds rolled in so we just opened the enclosure doors and started ventilating again. The clouds cleared and we opened around 02:40Z. The Dimm computer was frozen. Cycling the power on the computer solved the problem. We began with supernova imaging because the moon was up. The first attempt at 82 S (run 5596) was not good because the az axis aborted for unknown reasons: azimuth (ABORT_EVENT: 2005-09-12 03:09:34Z) Run 5597: 82 S. Good from the beginning (frame 9, lambda +110.5). Seeing is sub arcsecond and the sky is photometric. Note that skippy has problems at the beginning of the supernova scans (up until lambda of about +116). The symptoms are that skippy will give good (in-spec) values on 1 frame and bad values on the next. However, the number of stars it uses in the solution is usually low (maybe 5 or less) and so the values it returns cannot be trusted. We believe this occurs because the catalog skippy uses is sparse in this area. This means that the observers cannot get a reliable estimate of the pointing on SN scans until lambda is greater than about +116. Fortunately, skippy reported the pointing was good when we got to the area that could be trusted. This run was good from beginning to end (frame 9 to 324; lambda +110.5 to +157.8; includes ramps). The entire run was photometric and had excellent seeing, much of it sub arcsecond. After endNight completed, we ran the field link script and the spooling script. Both appeared to be successful. The spooling script said it could process 702 frames. sp1 gave us a scare. Watcher threw a "no reply (.CAM: 2005-09-12 04:08:55Z)" followed by voltage errors for ccd01 in vs-, i-trim1 and vsw-. A critical error alert followed. We called Connie and she suspected a failed power supply. We tried to "cc ping" sp1 in sop but there was no reply. We went down to check the power supplies but they were all functioning. We checked all 4 spectro power supplies (red and blue for both sp1 and sp2) but could find nothing wrong. Connie then suggested we check the ethernet connection for sp1 and it looked fine too. While checking the ethernet connection we checked all the sp1 connections that we could see. Everything appeared to be normal. sp1 appeared to be fine. We did another "cc ping" to sp1 from the same sop window and it answered "PING". sp1 had apparently healed itself. Connie believes it was a communications glitch whereby nothing could talk to sp1 for a while. Connie filed a bug report. Watcher spit out the following warnings: AxisStat:alt (clock_loss_signal: 2005-09-12 06:08:43Z) AxisStat:az (clock_loss_signal: 2005-09-12 06:08:43Z) AxisStat:rot (clock_loss_signal: 2005-09-12 06:08:43Z) and more like it with later time stamps. The moon set around 06:20Z and since it was photometric with good seeing we ended the SN scan and started a segue drift. Run 5598: Segue 79 S. Good from the beginning (frame 9, lambda +158.6). Some of the best seeing we've ever had. We counted 22 chips with sub arcsecond seeing at one point. Watcher actually complained that the seeing was too good: fwhm (06:43:01Z 2005-09-12 ccd43:) Sorry Robert. There was a glitch in the photometricity reported by the cloud camera between 07:07Z and 07:15Z in the northeast. The cloud camera frames for this time period were inspected and the nature of the glitch was probably clouds. Regardless, we were pointed just a little east of due south and even if they were clouds, they were nowhere near us. Clouds did arrive at 08:18Z though (around frame 188, lambda -174.5). We continued the drift for another 25 frames in the hope that the clouds would go away but they increased. We ended the drift at frame 213, lambda -170.7 and tried another supernova scan. However, the clouds were so thick by this time that we got nothing. We closed around 09:20Z due to threatening clouds and never reopened. The seeing values from the dimm were very late showing up on the web page. They didn't arrive until approximately 10:00Z. Not sure what caused this. We put compressor #2 back on-line at 10:50Z. endNight completed successfully. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame
