APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday December 3, 2005 (MJD 53708) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- John Barentine Kaike Pan Mike Harvanek (swing) Olena Malanushenko Viktor Malanushenko ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Weather: high dust, high wind at sunset. Dust drop below 3000 at about 01:10Z. High thick clouds. plates: 2312: four exposures. The lowest (S/N)^2 on b1 is 13.9, b2 gets 24.1. Done? 2061: one 30 min exposure in clouds. 2302: Done (but see log)? Because lowest (S/N)^2 from different nights are for different camera (b1 or r1). The real lowest (S/N)^2 is 48.3, slightly higher than that indicated in data base without last exposure with (S/N)^2 of 1.7. If adding this 1.7, we are done with this plate. Is it done? 2279, 2289, and 2284 done. We intend to declare plate 2312 and 2302 done. But we leave the final decision to Brian, Steph, or somebody else. We currently leave these cartridges plugged, and manage to use the rest 7 cartridges to cover whole night. Please give us feedback: should these two cartridge be unplugged or get more singals. Problems: --- NaN value in fits header --- IDL gives SDSS_FLAGNAME message see probelm section for detail. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation was not adjusted. A postCal showed all x/wsigma values to be in the black. The spectrographs are currently collimated for a temp of approximately +1 degree C. High wind and dust prevented early ventilation. No problems to report. Night: ------ 03:00Z cart 2, plt 2313, stars on goto field. Seeing is bad and unstable (1.9-3.2"). Thick clouds pass by, stars in and out. During the readout of the first science exposure, SOP gives a message saying NaN value in fits header. When Kaike plots sos extacted spectrum in IDL session, he gets following message even thought the spectra are ploted: IDL 5.5a> apoplot, 2312, 88 APOPLOT: Selecting MJD=53708 (override this with MJD keyword) SDSS_FLAGNAME: MESSAGE: Unknown bit 30 for flag TTARGET IDL 5.5a> got four exposures on the plate. We extended the last exposure for 10 min (passed the plate expire time 10 min), tried to get this plate done. But because of more clouds passed by, we did not quit get there. The lowest (S/N)^2 for b1 is 13.9.(S/N)^2 for b2 is 24.1. We are not sure if we can declare this plate done. 05:15Z cart 7, plt 2061, stars on goto field. Unfortunately, this clouds passing there, we have to wait. We get one 30 min exposure in clouds. 06:35Z cart 3, plt 2302, stars on goto field. Skies become more clear than half hour ago. Seeing is about 2.0". Eefficiency reach above 80% for first time tonight (but drops below 40% after 40 min). John feels that the edges of flate frames are less illuminated than they used to be. With the first two exposures, the lowest (S/N)^2 reached 48.3 (r1) (adding to those obtained previously, see below). Then, we obtain another 20-min exposure. However, because of clouds, we get (S/N)^2 of 0nly 1.7 on both r1 and b1. Clouds make it difficuty to estimate exposure time. Considering we are so close to (S/N)^2 of 50, and we have one exposure with (S/N)^2 of 1.7 which may be useful, if we add it to total (S/N)^2, total (S/N)^2 reach 50.0. we decide not to have additional exposure for this plate and declare it done. With tonight's two exposures obtained, this plate is declared done after adding tonight's (S/N)^2 to a previous one, see below.
