APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday December 4, 2005 (MJD 53709) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long John Barentine Mike Harvanek (swing) Visitors: Gil Esquerdo (Planetary Science Institute, Tucson) Jackie Diehl (NSO) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- An extremely dry and photometric night of marginal to poor seeing, so we pounded away on spectro plates. Finished four (2273, 2275, 2302, 2312) and obtained signal on three others (2327, 2061, 2281). We did not run DIMM tonight: the telescope refused to slew west in azimuth. French has been notified. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro collimation was not adjusted. A postCal showed all x/wsigma values to be in the black. The spectrographs are currently collimated for a temp of approximately +1 degree C. No problems to report. Night: ------ Open in twilight at 00:05Z. By the end of twilight, airTemp was already around -4 deg C, so we anticipated having to update the spectro collimation through the night. We couldn't get DIMM to slew to the west (CCW as seen from above) at all in twilight so we didn't run the seeing monitor tonight. The problem may be related to the cold temperatures. 00:40Z Cart 2, Plate 2312 (tile 8098, segue126). We start with a low (S/N)^2 of 13.9 on this plate. GSOGTF but no immediately evident -- the scope was so out of equilibrium with the air that our focus guess (~0) was no good and the stars were too faint to see even as donuts. fk5InFiber number 10 showed a big bright OOF donut, so our pointing was good from the start. We got one exposure of 1200 s on this plate. With a low (S/N)^2 of 4.3, we more than finished it. 01:40Z Cart 8, Plate 2327 (tile 8113, seguefaint127). GSOGTF. Seeing was highly variable, tending toward bad, during this plate so we made multiple 1200 s exposures on it until the plate expired. At first it appeared that seeing was improving and we might finish the plate, but then it tanked and we bumped up the final exposure to 1800 s in hopes that would put us over the threshold. No joy. We paused to take SoS-requested postCalibs twice during the ~3 hours we spent here, both after science exposures 35202 and 35208. We also noted increasingly large WSIGMA values from the previous plate to this one, so we paused between plates to update the spectro collimation for the ambient airTemp. 05:27Z Cart 7, Plate 2061 (tile 8027, seguefaint105). No GSOGTF, but we found a glow in fk5InFiber number 10. The star was about 7 arcsec from the center of the fiber -- not bad for being now on the entirely opposite side of the sky as the previous plate. First science exposure (35124) shows good values of WSIGMA and XSIGMA so it looked like our focus move was good. We obtained three exposures of 1200 s each on this plate before it expired. At this point we were out of available plates for about 90 minutes until the late night Legacy plates became available, so we spent the time acquiring additional signal on the SEGUE faint plate 2302. 06:55Z Cart 3, Plate 2302 (tile 8098, seguefaint125). The MCP went down some time during instChange, resulting in an "MCP is unavailable" error. Rebooted the MCP card whilst still at the telescope and carried on. GSOGTF. We began with a total (S/N)^2 of 46.9 on this plate (actually more if lowest values on previous exposures are tallied -- evicently not the way the bookkeeping was done for this plate in the plateDB) and enough to consider it done but hey, if a little S/N is good, more S/N must be better. One exposure of 1200 s made this plate more than done. 07:33Z Cart 1, Plate 2273 (tile 1653, chunk122). GSOGTF. The airTemp continued on its way down during this plate, suggesting we might need to make another focus adjustment. Seeing continued its wild ride and our efficiency wasn't as good as earlier. We made two exposures of 1000 s each, and two of 1200 s each, to finish the plate. During this plate we noted that the focus changed from about +200 to +100; the airTemp changed by about +1.5 deg C. Updated collimation again after postCalibs. We declared this plate done though the low (S/N)^2 = 13.3 (r1) as the other cameras/chips were well in the clear. 09:27Z Cart 5, Plate 2275 (tile 1639, chunk122). GSOGTF. We had consistently low signal on this plate in r1, specifically, resulting in a need for more exposures even after the other chips had crossed the (S/N)^2 = 15 threshold. We got 4 x 1200 s exposures, did the SoS-requested postCalib and waited for SoS results on the 4th science exposure. That brought our total (S/N)^2 low to 12.6, requiring one final 1200 s exposure to finish it. 11:23Z Holy static discharge, Batman! Dewpoint outside reached -40.0 deg C, the lowest we think we have ever seen at APO. Needless to say, it was a wee bit dry outside. The wind stiffened up to around the closure limit but we kept going and gusts only ever barely crossed the 35 MPH threshold. (No electronic components were actually zapped during the filming of this motion picture.) 11:50Z Cart9, Plate 2281 (tile 1645, chunk122). GSOGTF. We obtained two science exposures on this plate, the second of which ran a little more than 10 minutes past the start of twilight. Note the comment in the spectro section of the log regarding the sky background in the first science exposure (35239). For the night our total changes to the spectro collimation were: sp1 = -7000 sp2 = -5000 Our final numbers were sp1 collimator motor positions -19700, -19720, -19210 sp2 collimator motor positions -10520, -13760, -13100 Closed up for the night at 12:55Z. endNight danced a little jig, to everyone's delight. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 5931 22:28Z 22:43Z 100 O 120.11 123.93 40 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): yes QA Procedures Done (y/n): yes UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 35191, plate -9999 ------- 22:29 35191 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35192, plate 2061 ------- 22:39 35192 10.0 flat 22:41 35193 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35194, plate -9999 ------- 23:21 35194 0.0 bias ----- sequence 35195, plate 2312 ------- 4.3 9.5 9.6 14.4 DONE with 01:07 35195 10.0 flat previous signal 01:09 35196 2.0 arc 01:33 35197 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35198, plate 2327 ------- 54.9 47.5 54.2 44.3 01:45 35198 10.0 flat 01:48 35199 2.0 arc 02:10 35200 1200.1 target 02:33 35201 1200.1 target 02:56 35202 1200.1 target 03:18 35203 1200.1 target 03:22 35204 10.0 flat 03:24 35205 2.0 arc 03:47 35206 1200.1 target 04:09 35207 1200.1 target 04:32 35208 1200.1 target 05:04 35209 1800.1 target 05:07 35210 10.0 flat 05:10 35211 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35212, plate 2061 ------- 19.8 25.0 26.3 27.0 05:28 35212 10.0 flat 05:31 35213 2.0 arc 05:54 35214 1200.1 target 06:16 35215 1200.1 target 06:39 35216 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35217, plate 2302 ------- 7.5 9.0 10.8 10.0 DONE with 07:03 35217 10.0 flat previous signal 07:05 35218 2.0 arc 07:28 35219 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35220, plate 2273 ------- 17.7 13.3 22.8 16.8 DONE (See Log) 07:42 35220 10.0 flat 07:44 35221 2.0 arc 08:04 35222 1000.1 target 08:23 35223 1000.1 target 08:46 35224 1200.1 target 09:14 35225 1500.1 target 09:16 35226 10.0 flat 09:19 35227 2.0 arc ----- sequence 35228, plate 2275 ------- 28.4 16.2 38.4 31.8 DONE 09:37 35228 10.0 flat 09:39 35229 2.0 arc 10:02 35230 1200.1 target 10:25 35231 1200.1 target 10:48 35232 1200.1 target 11:10 35233 1200.1 target 11:14 35234 10.0 flat 11:16 35235 2.0 arc 11:39 35236 1200.1 target ----- sequence 35237, plate 2281 ------- 8.4 6.2 15.2 13.8 11:52 35237 10.0 flat 11:54 35238 2.0 arc 12:17 35239 1200.1 target NOTE: Sky plot for science exposure 35239 looks odd.
