APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Wednesday November 1, 2006 (MJD 54041) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Long ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- superNovaScience! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Imaged 82 N in two parts, skipping the part within about 10 degrees of the moon which happened to be sitting on the stripe tonight at an RA of about 355. Run 6522 covered the first part from lambda 113 to 156 (RA 298 - 341) Poor seeing and moon-brightened clouds plagued much of this run. Run 6524 covered the range -180 to -123 (RA 5 - 62) Seeing was better and clouds thinner for this run. Should all be useable. Run 6525 is the last part of 82 S between -147 and -123. This was possible due to the chunk of 82 N skipped, allowing some imaging of 82 S before it sunk too low. Cloud camera appears at least for some signal levels to be displaying the inverse of normal mapping. Thin cloud appears darker than sky and its wake lighter. Bugs crawling around make black lines and spots rather than white. Couldn't check log in editor (emacs) prior to sending. See problems section for traceback. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- 00:15Z Enclosure closed fans on louvers open for on telescope bias 00:19Z Run 6521 On telescope bias 00:50Z Enclosure Open Run 6522 82 N 113 to 156 Lots of moon, some high cloud, east wind bringing poor seeing. Looks like marginal data at best. 01:36Z Twilight frame 45, lambda 112 Much of this run plagued by bad seeing and clouds Seeing 1.8 to 2.2 arcseconds for most of run going to 2.5 or worse after frame 250. Chunks of the run least affected by cloud are between frames 0 to 40, 60 to 140 and 200 to 250. 04:30Z Stopping due to passing clouds and proximity to moon causing huge background variation 05:14Z After a wait on clouds, attempting to pick up the scan on the other side of the moon's position. 05:15Z Run 6523 82 N -180 to -177 somehow in 40 minutes the focus changed by 250 for the same elevation. Starting new drift with better beginning focus. 05:22Z Run 6524 82 N -180 to -123 Skippy and focus happy from the start Seeing much better now. Wind direction changed to SW. Clouds thin enough and pointing far enough from moon to keep background variation reasonable. This run should be useful. 09:15Z With the gap I had to leave to avoid the moon, there is a little extra time, so I went to 82 S to scan the last 20 degrees or so which could be reached at decent elevation. 09:16Z Run 6525 82 S -147 to -123 Skippy and focus happy from the start. 10:05Z Moonset. Only very light cloud for this run. Seeing good throughout. 11:05Z Doors and louvers Closed, Fans Off. 11:20Z endNight rejoiced. 11:25Z Spooling for the first run (6522) started. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6520 23:15Z 23:49Z 100 O 99.15 107.65 67 ignore 6521 00:19Z 00:36Z 100 O 115.19 119.46 43 bias 6522 01:13Z 04:32Z 82 N 106.48 156.57 348 science 6523 05:12Z 05:21Z 82 N -179.78 -177.45 30 ignore 6524 05:23Z 09:14Z 82 N -179.78 -121.80 401 science 6525 09:17Z 10:54Z 82 S -146.77 -122.35 177 science ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- 6522 13 4 6 50.100 1.327 8.600 2.442 -0.23844 217 51 6522 65 4 68 -4.500 0.141 -3.800 0.140 -0.00874 217 51 6522 116 4 123 -4.000 0.153 -2.300 0.173 -0.00880 217 51 6522 168 4 95 -3.600 0.148 -1.300 0.141 -0.00839 217 51 6522 218 4 75 -3.200 0.172 -0.600 0.152 -0.00836 217 51 6522 271 4 60 -2.900 0.159 0.100 0.151 -0.00830 217 51 6522 321 4 71 -2.300 0.193 0.400 0.166 -0.00634 217 51 6524 20 4 37 0.400 0.118 0.000 0.112 -0.00272 200 56 6524 71 4 44 -0.200 0.094 -1.300 0.134 -0.00194 200 56 6524 123 4 43 -0.700 0.112 -2.100 0.116 -0.00174 200 56 6524 174 4 50 -0.500 0.080 -2.800 0.101 -0.00088 200 56 6524 226 4 50 0.100 0.102 -2.900 0.117 -0.00077 200 56 6524 276 4 52 -0.100 0.166 -3.200 0.120 -0.00037 200 56 6524 327 4 48 0.400 0.145 -3.100 0.105 -0.00096 200 56 6524 379 4 37 0.600 0.102 -3.400 0.109 -0.00044 200 56 6525 21 4 47 -2.200 0.185 -3.600 0.089 -0.01577 234 42 6525 72 4 55 -1.900 0.143 -4.100 0.100 -0.01433 234 42 6525 124 4 42 -1.800 0.122 -4.300 0.089 -0.01494 234 42 ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:37Z imager -36.97 0.0000 51.28 0.0000 59.43 0.0000 1.000000 05:34Z imager -20.04 0.0000 55.72 0.0000 73.09 0.0000 1.000000 09:30Z imager -53.94 0.0000 42.36 0.0000 47.05 0.0000 1.000000 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:37Z imager 1.00000 0 77 165 -37 51.3 2.9 13 110 23-i' 1.88 02:36Z imager 1.00000 0 -52 36 -37 51.3 2.4 11 108 23-i' 1.72 05:34Z imager 1.00000 0 -375 -273 -20 55.7 5.2 8 214 23-i' 1.22 06:30Z imager 1.00000 0 -323 -221 -20 55.7 4.8 4 236 23-i' 0.98 08:49Z imager 1.00000 0 -307 -206 -20 55.7 4.3 7 182 23-i' 0.92 09:30Z imager 1.00000 0 -261 -204 -54 42.4 4.4 6 184 23-i' 1.19 10:52Z imager 1.00000 0 -265 -207 -54 42.4 4.5 8 227 23-i' 1.02 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:16Z 46 18 2 356 (NNW) 480 - Mostly Clear 21:48Z 44 19 2 257 (WSW) 489 - Mostly Clear 22:20Z 47 22 2 330 (NNW) 576 - Mostly Clear 22:52Z 45 20 8 281 (W) 573 - Mostly Clear 23:25Z 43 17 4 256 (WSW) 464 - Mostly Clear 23:57Z 41 15 0 71 (ENE) 462 - Mostly Clear 00:29Z 39 23 10 77 (ENE) 855 - Mostly Clear 01:01Z 38 25 12 87 (E) 1317 - Mostly Clear 01:33Z 37 25 14 111 (ESE) 1385 - Mostly Clear 02:05Z 36 24 11 112 (ESE) 1421 - Mostly Clear 02:36Z 36 23 11 107 (ESE) 1313 - Mostly Clear 03:10Z 36 21 7 101 (E) 1275 - Partly Cloudy 03:46Z 36 18 7 88 (E) 1235 - Mostly Clear 04:18Z 37 15 3 95 (E) 1098 - Partly Cloudy 04:50Z 39 -2 8 202 (SSW) 445 - Mostly Clear 05:22Z 41 -4 7 178 (S) 200 - Mostly Clear 05:54Z 40 0 6 192 (SSW) 277 - Mostly Clear 06:26Z 40 2 2 241 (WSW) 335 - Mostly Clear 06:59Z 39 4 5 214 (SW) 357 - Mostly Clear 07:31Z 39 3 4 192 (SSW) 383 - Mostly Clear 08:03Z 39 6 3 201 (SSW) 372 - Mostly Clear 08:35Z 39 8 5 180 (S) 387 - Mostly Clear 09:07Z 39 10 5 183 (S) 351 - Mostly Clear 09:39Z 39 12 5 204 (SSW) 478 - Mostly Clear 10:11Z 39 14 8 223 (SW) 449 - Mostly Clear 10:44Z 39 11 5 247 (WSW) 428 - Mostly Clear 11:16Z 40 11 3 232 (SW) 427 - Mostly Clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:15Z Louvers Open, Fans On. 00:50Z Enclosure Open 11:05Z Doors and louvers Closed, Fans Off.
