APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday November 2, 2006 (MJD 54042) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Dan Long ET Crew: Jian Ge Justin Crepp ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Observed 6 ET cartridges under moony conditions and variable thin cirrus. A little time was lost having to hand feed b1 during cartridge changes, but not too much. Cloud camera still showing thin cloud as darker than sky. Has something changed from all the camera swaps that I should expect this? The top cartridge 1 cover latch on the side which has the fiber connection in it would not engage. The back nut was loose and would not hold the pin as it engaged the cartridge. It was tightened down, but might need a look during the day to see if it is properly adjusted. b1's fill system cable is disconnected and a couple of pigtails are on the connector pins to the solenoid. It was last topped off at 13:00Z and will need attention by 14:30Z to prevent warming. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- 00:00Z Louvers Open, Fans On Taking ET calibration data Problem with b1. It is warming. From the plot it looks to have started around 23:40Z It won't accept a fill. The solenoid shuts off a few seconds after the fill sequence is started. Larry came down and had a look. After checking connectors and jiggling cables, it turns out that pushing on the insulation over the full sensor got it to work, so it appears there is a bad connection there. Subsequent fill sequences seemed to work. CCD temperature got to about -45 C before it got nitrogen and cooled again. 00:50Z Enclosure Open 02:02Z Cartridge 4 8028 Guide stars on slew Took two 50 minute exposures 04:10Z Cartridge 8 8032 Guide stars on slew 05:22Z Well we got one proper fill on b1 after the fix. It has gone dry again and won't open the solenoid at all, despite all my cajoling. With more help from Larry, we identified the pins that fire the solenoid and got b1 a dewar-full of LN2, using a 24V power supply. I will repeat this with each cartridge swap to keep it cold the rest of the night (reminds me of commissioning the spectrographs). Larry will work on a more permanent fix in the morning. 06:30Z Cartridge 6 8030 Guide stars on slew Seeing truly awful now after wind switch to the east (>2.5 arcseconds) Pointing fairly near the moon, so those thin cirrus clouds made for some pretty high background. 08:02Z Cartridge 1 8033 Spent a couple of minutes during the change filling b1. Spent another 10 minutes fixing the top cartridge cover latch on the side which has the fiber connection in it. The nut was loose and would not hold the pin as it engaged the cartridge. It was tightened down, but might need a look during the day to see if it is tight enough. Guide stars on slew. Seeing is back to around 1.4 with the wind switching back to the south. 08:29Z Seeing bouncing up and down as the wind direction crosses back and forth between east and west of south. 10:08Z Cartridge 7 8031 Topped off b1 while they were taking cals. Guide stars on slew. Large variation in fiber focus. Inner fibers have fwhm of 1.2. Fibers toward the edge of the plate have fwhm of at least 2.5 and in many cases are clearly donuts. Guide fibers not completely plugged in? Plate profile wrong? 11:24Z Cartridge 2 8018 Another top off of b1 during the swap. Guide stars on slew (even at 80 degrees elevation!) No nasty focus variation here. Excellent seeing too. About half the fibers pegged at the .98 lower limit 12:40Z Doors and louvers Closed, Fans Off. 12:48Z endNight rejoiced at transferring a night's worth of cloudcam images. 13:00Z One last top off of b1. Should last until 14:30Z or so. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 41220, plate -9999 ------- 23:36 41220 0.0 bias ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:16Z 4 8028 236.72 -0.0015 53.14 0.0011 86.27 -0.0148 1.000030 04:15Z 8 8032 290.41 -0.0014 60.34 0.0022 123.47 -0.0179 0.999950 06:38Z 6 8030 -40.44 -0.0012 42.89 0.0011 146.69 -0.0311 0.999840 08:16Z 1 8033 -62.07 -0.0008 56.67 0.0024 130.10 -0.0150 1.000040 10:28Z 7 8031 274.05 -0.0012 47.86 0.0011 115.87 -0.0275 1.000040 11:32Z 2 8018 212.02 -0.0027 80.17 0.0007 36.18 0.0477 1.000270 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 02:16Z 4 8028 1.00003 -296 905 -20 237 53.1 8.1 1 198 - 1.2 04:15Z 8 8032 0.99995 494 1540 -20 290 60.3 7.5 4 188 - 1.2 06:38Z 6 8030 0.99984 1580 2543 30 -40 42.9 4.6 8 141 - 2.5 08:16Z 1 8033 1.00004 -395 864 30 -62 56.7 4.9 8 172 - 1.4 10:28Z 7 8031 1.00004 -395 801 -60 274 47.9 6.0 14 178 - 1.3 11:36Z 2 8018 1.00027 -2666 -1073 15 216 79.7 6.3 13 178 - 1.0 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:55Z 50 19 8 255 (WSW) 332 - Thin Cirrus 22:27Z 47 19 6 275 (W) 276 - Thin Cirrus 22:59Z 46 20 6 308 (NW) 504 - Thin Cirrus 23:31Z 43 20 1 259 (W) 445 - Thin Cirrus 00:03Z 42 20 0 113 (ESE) 451 - Thin Cirrus 00:36Z 42 20 4 88 (E) 507 - Thin Cirrus 01:08Z 44 -7 0 134 (SE) 179 - Thin Cirrus 01:40Z 46 -15 0 173 (S) 137 - Thin Cirrus 02:10Z 45 -16 0 175 (S) 141 - Thin Cirrus 02:40Z 46 -18 2 179 (S) 105 - Thin Cirrus 03:10Z 44 -18 4 126 (SE) 111 - Thin Cirrus 03:40Z 45 -15 2 163 (SSE) 106 - Thin Cirrus 04:12Z 45 -5 2 188 (S) 96 - Thin Cirrus 04:42Z 43 -2 5 165 (SSE) 81 - Thin Cirrus 05:12Z 42 -2 4 181 (S) 135 - Thin Cirrus 05:42Z 40 2 1 138 (SE) 175 - Thin Cirrus 06:12Z 41 5 6 106 (ESE) 255 - Thin Cirrus 06:45Z 39 12 6 151 (SSE) 269 - Thin Cirrus 07:17Z 40 13 7 176 (S) 242 - Thin Cirrus 07:50Z 41 8 13 178 (S) 184 - Thin Cirrus 08:21Z 40 17 10 172 (S) 287 - Thin Cirrus 08:54Z 41 19 12 180 (S) 308 - Thin Cirrus 09:26Z 42 19 7 169 (S) 303 - Thin Cirrus 09:58Z 42 19 13 177 (S) 321 - Thin Cirrus 10:29Z 42 19 15 177 (S) 307 - Thin Cirrus 11:00Z 43 18 15 180 (S) 289 - Thin Cirrus 11:31Z 42 19 12 175 (S) 297 - Thin Cirrus 12:03Z 43 19 9 180 (S) 298 - Thin Cirrus 12:35Z 43 18 10 190 (S) 295 - Thin Cirrus ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 00:00Z Louvers Open, Fans On. 00:50Z Enclosure Open 12:40Z Doors and louvers Closed, Fans Off.
