APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Sunday November 5, 2006 (MJD 54045) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Kaike Pan ET: Jian Ge Justin Crepp Support: French Leger (by phone) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- ET Science! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The last two and half hours was lost to high wind speed. Under variant sky conditions, Observed ET plates 8032, 8028, 8030, 8033, 8032 (again), 8031 and 8018. ET piggy-back observations were attempted. See the main log for details. Problems: 1) had rotator abortion during slew from field to instrument change (see log). 2) had alt fiducial correction too large after the rotator abortion (see log). 3) The MCP showes the SP2 door was closed when it is actually open. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: With cartridge 1 (the piggy-back plate) mounted, Spectro focus was checked and adjusted to expected night temperature 1 C. As Mike noted last night, the b2 & r2 wavemax values for the arc are in red. These wavemax values are 40 A and 80 A smaller than their canonical values, respectively. After talked with Stephe, we decided not to correct this for tonight given this is only a test plate and the moon, and because b1 and r1 seems okay. Stephe will look into this tomorrow. I rebooted photo and astro crats because id2 and ad3 were not available. night: ------ 23:20Z Began ventilation. 00:25Z enclosure off. 00:58Z cart 8, E8032. stars on GTF. 01:08Z Started ET 50 min exposure. 02:04Z ET plate 8028 (cartridge 4). Needed an FK5 to acquire the field (offset RA -5, Dec 9). 02:10Z started one 50 minute exposure. no guiding stars on fiber 3 and 6. Seeing was a variable, 1.5 to 2.2". 03:10Z ET plate 8030 (cartridge 6). Needed an FK5 to acquire the field. 03:15Z started one 50 minute exposures. 04:15Z ET plate 8033 (cartridge 1). Stars on GTF. 04:20Z started one 50 min exposure. This is the piggy-back plate. ET team wants me to do the piggy-back observation when they visit this field again. Seeing was good at 12". 05:20Z cart 8, E8032. stars on GTF. 01:25Z Started ET 50 min exposure. 06:25Z cart 7, E8031. Stars on GTF. 06:30Z started ET 50 min exposure. 06:40Z stoped this exposure because the moon is too close to the field. 06:45Z ET mid-night calibration. 06:55Z ET 8033 (cartridge 1). The piggy-back plate. Stars on GTF. 07:00Z pre-cali. The same as last night, the b2 & r2 wavemax values for t the arc are in the red. SoS did not reduce the science exposures. According to last night SoS results, pairs of 150s, 200s, 300s, 450s, and 600s exposure were acquired. Sky was cloudy after 06:40Z. two 50 min exposures were obtained. 09:00Z we got rotator "AO" when we moved telescope to the instrument change position from the previous field. Rotator aborted at 28 degree. axis init could clear the "AO", but it came back when trying to move the rotator to 0 with tcc window. Then I tried to move the rotator back to 0 from MCP without any luck. A physic check in lower enclosure showed the rotator motor was okay. After a few attemps from tcc and MCP window, I decided to call French. He suggested me to move rotator in another direction from MCP. Then I did succussfully move rotator from 28 to 90, then from 90 to 0.0. Thanks and sorry to French. 20 minutes was lost due to the problem. After changed cartridge and went to new field, I cloud not found stars, even with FK5. Then I checked fiducial cross windows, noticed that there was correction for alt is too large at 76 degree. Then I force a fiducial correction with MCP window at 46 degree, and move back to FK5 stars near the field. This time, I find the star. Another 7 minutes was lost to the fiducial correction problem. 09:30Z cart 2, E 8018. FK5 used to acquired the field. 09:35Z started a 50 min exposure. Seeing varied between 1.3 and 2.2. 10:30Z enclosure on due to high wind speed. 12:35 gave it up, endNight finished. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 41235, plate -9999 ------- 23:01 41235 0.0 bias ----- sequence 41236, plate 8033 ------- 23:30 41236 10.0 flat 23:32 41237 2.0 arc 23:36 41238 2.0 arc 23:39 41239 3.0 arc 00:15 41240 3.0 arc 00:18 41241 3.0 arc 07:02 41242 10.0 flat 07:04 41243 2.0 arc 07:18 41244 601.0 target 07:26 41245 301.0 target 07:34 41246 301.0 target 07:44 41247 450.0 target 07:54 41248 451.0 target 08:04 41249 451.0 target 08:12 41250 201.0 target 08:18 41251 201.0 target 08:24 41252 201.0 target 08:29 41253 200.0 target 08:39 41254 201.0 target 08:45 41255 151.0 target 08:50 41256 151.0 target ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 01:11Z 8 8032 44.90 0.0032 71.55 0.0012 218.79 0.0117 0.999970 02:14Z 4 8028 236.85 -0.0008 51.47 -0.0009 88.06 -0.0146 0.999980 03:32Z 6 8030 23.27 0.0011 48.84 0.0000 199.45 -0.0125 0.999760 04:22Z 1 8033 56.76 0.0033 59.76 0.0002 226.31 -0.0062 1.000020 05:31Z 8 8032 273.50 -0.0009 42.20 0.0002 117.34 -0.0275 0.999940 07:17Z 1 8033 -45.17 -0.0003 64.67 0.0019 142.11 -0.0069 1.000000 10:02Z 2 8018 132.56 0.0000 77.05 0.0000 -55.01 0.0000 1.000270 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 00:44Z 8 0 1.00000 0 1257 0 121 30.0 3.9 7 2 01:12Z 8 8032 0.99997 296 1574 200 45 71.6 3.8 16 3 1.6 02:14Z 4 8028 0.99998 198 1559 220 237 51.4 3.9 8 9 1.6 03:32Z 6 8030 0.99976 2370 3216 70 23 48.9 4.9 5 329 1.7 04:22Z 1 8033 1.00002 -198 969 -20 57 59.8 5.3 22 3 1.2 05:31Z 8 8032 0.99994 593 1748 50 273 42.2 5.1 17 18 1.5 07:17Z 1 8033 1.00000 0 1202 60 -45 64.6 4.1 20 12 1.2 10:02Z 2 8018 1.00027 -2666 -1026 60 132 77.0 4.2 10 46 1.6 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 18:32Z 44 20 5 304 (NW) 471 - clear 19:05Z 44 18 3 359 (NNW) 462 - 19:37Z 44 19 2 334 (NNW) 457 - clear 20:10Z 43 19 6 276 (W) 502 - 20:42Z 45 21 6 289 (WNW) 524 - clear 21:14Z 45 20 9 328 (NNW) 544 - 21:46Z 43 23 2 322 (NW) 719 - clear 22:18Z 42 21 6 327 (NNW) 643 - 22:51Z 42 20 3 271 (W) 564 - clear 23:23Z 41 17 8 301 (WNW) 501 - 23:55Z 40 19 4 1 (N) 426 - clear 00:27Z 39 21 8 0 (N) 552 - 00:58Z 39 20 9 12 (NNE) 542 - clear 01:30Z 39 20 11 11 (N) 550 - 02:02Z 38 18 7 37 (NE) 485 - clear 02:32Z 39 20 10 2 (N) 457 - 03:02Z 41 4 22 3 (N) 181 - clear 03:32Z 41 3 15 355 (NNW) 186 - 04:02Z 41 5 17 8 (N) 223 - clear 04:32Z 41 5 12 13 (NNE) 177 - 05:03Z 41 11 12 3 (N) 221 - clear 05:33Z 41 10 9 12 (NNE) 228 - 06:03Z 40 12 19 2 (N) 233 - clear 06:36Z 40 13 14 356 (NNW) 253 - clear 07:07Z 39 16 11 32 (NNE) 315 - party cloudy 07:37Z 40 11 19 33 (NNE) 262 - light clouds 08:09Z 39 14 12 36 (NE) 277 - party cloudy 08:39Z 39 15 23 10 (N) 330 - party cloudy 09:10Z 39 15 7 355 (NNW) 288 - light clouds 09:40Z 39 17 16 25 (NNE) 369 - mostly clear 10:10Z 39 10 29 11 (N) 213 - light clouds 10:40Z 39 7 24 24 (NNE) 160 - light clouds 11:10Z 40 5 17 1 (N) 110 - light clouds 11:40Z 41 3 16 30 (NNE) 74 - light clouds 12:13Z 42 0 16 17 (NNE) 93 - clear ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 023:30Z Enclosure doors opened, fans and blowers on, louvers opened. 00:25Z Enclosure off. 10:30Z Enclosure on, doors closed. 12:25 fans and blowers off, louvers closed.
