APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Tuesday November 14, 2006 (MJD 54054) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Night: Mike Harvanek Dan Long ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- subArcminuteSuperNovaScience! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Woohoo! An entire night of Sub-arcminute seeing! A very disturbed atmosphere was left in the wake of a frontal passage this evening. Seeing was consistently wretched most of the night. After a short weather delay at the start of the night, we took 5 1/2 hours of very fuzzy supernova data on 82 N. Run 6559 lambda 113 to -170. Its value is dubious. We got one additional exposure on cartridge 4 plate 2436 and finished it. We got two exposures on cartridge 1 before twilight. The spectro temperatures are notably different than the PMSS temperatures we have been using as a proxy for the spectro temperatures. This should be monitored to see how well using the spectro values works at getting the focus correct for the night's observing. I'm not sure how confident we are in the temperature values coming from the spectrographs, and logging both the PMSS temperature and the mechSend data in the spectro focus info for a dark run or so will go a long way in establishing that confidence. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- Spectro focus checked and adjusted for 3 C based on spectro internal temperature sensors. Delaying ventilation since dust is rising quickly. Night: ------ 00:10Z Run 6558 On telescope bias Dust tops out just over 3000 and begins dropping again. 00:35Z East door partly open, Louvers Open, Fans On. Clouds and wind bumping into the limit are keeping us closed for now. 01:15Z Wind staying below the limit (just). Clouds thinning. If it stays this way another 15 minutes, we're opening. 01:30Z Enclosure open Leaving us on clouds/wind until the spectro fill finishes to account for the cost of the delayed opening. 01:55Z Run 6559 82 N 113 Clouds coming and going at the start. Skippy good from the start. In focus by frame 19. Dismal seeing at the start of the run, fwhm 3 arcseconds in i. 02:07Z Ramp start frame 19, lambda 113. 03:00Z Conditions about the same. Mostly clear skies and seeing around 3 arcseconds. Rick called and we informed him of the conditions. He asked if there was another program that could make use of the time and we said that at more than 3 arcsecond seeing we couldn't even do spectroscopy. So it was decided to let the scan go and hope for improvement. 06:35Z Rotator is building an ever larger tracking error. The voltage reading in the mcp is around 6000 or so (about half the over current limit), but the error is around 600 ticks and climbing. It didn't climb much higher and never aborted. 07:11Z High wind mercifully put an end to the drift. Closing. 07:52Z Wind speed drops back under the limit. 08:00Z The PT was left open and running during the gusty winds as it is mostly protected in its dome. We continued to monitor seeing using PT frames and based on the images, are electing to leave the 2.5m closed. Right now the PT is getting 5 arcsecond seeing in r, up from about 3.5 around the time we closed the 2.5m 10:00Z Seeing is "improving". Taking the imager off and switching to spectro as SN time has essentially passed. 10:19Z Cartridge 4 2436 Survey 5.2 4.1 5.3 4.2 Needed FK5 17.6 10.5 17.8 11.1 --------------------- 22.8 14.6 23.1 25.3 Done Seeing may or may not be good enough to be usable. It is around 2.7" Things improve in the last half of the exposure. 11:24Z Cartridge 1 2571 Survey 11.1 8.3 13.0 9.9 Guide stars on slew Seeing is now the best of the night at around 2 arcseconds. Got two exposures before the sun started interfering. 12:35Z Enclosure Closed, Louvers Closed, Fans Off. 12:40Z endNight rejoiced. 12:45Z Attempted spooling, but got the busy signal abort as it was still munching on 6555. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame The spectro temperatures are notably different than the PMSS temperatures we have been using as a proxy for the spectro temperatures.
