APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Thursday March 8, 2007 (MJD 54168) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Swing: Kaike Pan Night: Viktor Malanushenko Shannon Watters Support: Steph Snedden, French Leger ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Science and shakedown tasks ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- Started the night with the threat of precipitation so we weren't able to open. When the skies did clear operator error complicated the removal of the enclosure, the mounting of the engcam, and resulted in minor damage to the wind baffle and Lindy cart (see problems). We did an on-sky imager test and acquired out of focus donuts (see log), an imager bias, and an imager flat. We encountered an error while doing checkflat (see log). While we were moving the telescope in alt-az only the rotator moved on its own. This happened twice and French is aware of it (and suspects the TCC). While checking the tbars before unmounting the imager we couldn't get a "cc imstat" status because of ~20 ftelnet errors. French told us to leave the imager on and the telescope at zenith and the day crew will take care of it while they look into the mysterious tcc movements. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ----------- Afternoon checkout went smoothly. Focus adjusted for the colder weather. Now set for about 5 C (using the spectro body temperatures). Night: ------ 06:15Z Home/Relax Primary 06:30Z Home Secondary 06:37Z Starting to take data for a pointing model. Results from testing star position on engcam using the rotator: Old position : 776, 533 Last nights position: 779.8, 531.4 Tonights position : 776, 535 We didn't get a satisfactory solution from tpoint yet but were running out of time so we're still using last nights incomplete model. 11:00Z Run 6740. When the skies cleared and we moved the telescope to an alt of 6 degrees to remove the enclosure we failed to move the cart out of the way and the telescope wind baffle landed on the cart handle. We couldn't move the telescope back up until we cleared an alt axis slip. When we did an "axis init" the telescope started to fall to the ground and an e-stop was needed to stop it! It fell to about 2 degrees. French came and helped us move the telescope back manually. The Lindy cart handle was bent and there was a small dent in the wind baffle but French said the damage was minimal and that he would take care of it tomorrow. Why the telescope just "fell" is a mystery. Then we opened the enclosure and began getting ready to mount the engcam. I rolled the Lindy cart in place to dismount the cart but released the latches before raising the cart plate up to the bottom of the cart! The cart didn't fall to the ground but it did fall a few inches at an angle and was hung up. French helped us get it back into place and there doesn't seem to be any damage. Thanks again French.
