APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Saturday August 30, 2008 (MJD 54709) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Observers: Dan Oravetz Howard Brewington Guider: Paul Harding Support: Jon Brinkmann ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Shake! ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- We did not open because of bad weather. Determined a work-around for the Landru xterm problem. Reviewed the 2.5-meter mirror collimation. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- We had to reboot the photo-one crate. Spectro focus was checked but not adjusted; it's set for about 12-degrees C. Collimate numbers are posted in the Problems Section. im> df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 142G 112G 23G 83% / /dev/sda1 99M 30M 64M 33% /boot /dev/sdb1 917G 648G 224G 75% /data sdssfiles1:/data1/data 1.5T 597G 796G 43% /files Night: ---------- 011:28Z Sunset with clouds, rain, and high humidity. 02:52Z Twilight Landru problem and work-around: =============================== There's a problem with the new OS and/or Xquartz installed on Landru. We've talked with Jon Brinkman, and he is working on a fix. The problem occurs when one closes xterm sessions. When setting up to fly the scope on 29 August, I (as usual) opened all my subsequent xterm sessions via the first one where I did the ssh-add on sdsshost2. I used the "xterm &" command. Then, later in the night, I opened a new xterm on landru via the pull-down menu at the top of the desktop for a mozilla session. I closed the mozilla session a few minutes later and kill that landru xterm by typing exit. In doing so, this action also kill all my other xterm sessions, viz., tpm, watcher, mcp, tcc, tccMon, idl, sop, and iop. You can test this by opening two xterm sessions on landru via the pull-down menu and typing exit in the second one. Then by moving your mouse cursor into the first xterm session, it will also be kill. It seems that the cursor is somehow remembering the exit command from the second session. DanO also tried this, and it kill his first session as well. Until Jon finds the problem, the work-around is of course, DO NOT close any xterm sessions while flying the telescope with Landru. Later in the night, Dan and I reviewed the 2.5-meter collimation procedure. 10:08Z endNight finished and was happy. 11:17Z Morning twilight ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 7663 22:14Z 22:34Z 100 O 22.14 27.06 44 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ----- sequence 54436, plate -9999 ------- 22:17 54436 0.0 bias ----- sequence 54436, plate 0 ------- 22:33 54437 10.0 flat 22:36 54438 2.0 arc 22:41 54439 3.0 arc 22:44 54440 3.0 arc ----- sequence 54441, plate 3106 ------- 22:49 54441 10.0 flat 22:51 54442 2.0 arc 22:54 54443 3.0 arc 22:57 54444 2.0 arc ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 22:18Z 6 0 1.00000 0 1227 0 121 30.0 11.1 10 91 ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 21:58Z 51 51 9 100 (E) -9999 - 22:31Z 52 51 9 117 (ESE) -9999 - 23:03Z 54 52 10 129 (SE) -9999 - 23:35Z 54 52 11 135 (SE) -9999 - 00:07Z 53 52 8 159 (SSE) -9999 - 00:39Z 52 51 9 112 (ESE) -9999 - 01:12Z 51 50 8 107 (ESE) -9999 - 01:44Z 50 50 15 126 (SE) -9999 - 02:16Z 50 50 15 124 (SE) -9999 - 02:48Z 50 51 17 120 (ESE) -9999 - 03:20Z 50 50 14 109 (ESE) -9999 - 03:52Z 50 50 16 112 (ESE) -9999 - 04:25Z 50 50 15 118 (ESE) -9999 - 04:57Z 50 51 22 124 (SE) -9999 - 05:29Z 50 51 18 121 (ESE) -9999 - 06:01Z 50 51 11 113 (ESE) -9999 - 06:33Z 50 51 19 131 (SE) -9999 - 07:05Z 50 51 16 149 (SSE) -9999 - 07:37Z 50 51 14 163 (SSE) -9999 - 08:10Z 50 50 15 173 (S) -9999 - 08:42Z 50 50 9 186 (S) -9999 - 09:14Z 50 50 10 186 (S) -9999 - 09:46Z 50 50 9 186 (S) -9999 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- Never opened!
