APACHE POINT OBSERVATORY SDSS 2.5M OBSERVING LOG Monday September 14, 2009 (MJD 55089) ---=== OBSERVING TEAM ===--- Dan Oravetz Audrey Simmons Paul Harding (Guider) Kyle Dawson (BOSS) Matt Olrnstead (BOSS) Vaishali Bhardwaz (BOSS) ---=== OBSERVING PLAN ===--- Imaging, if weather conditions permit Testing the guider on sky Running collimation tests with BOSS Testing BOSS on sky ---=== OBSERVING SUMMARY ===--- The first half of the night, we worked with Paul on the guider with a MARVELS cartridge. We still had trouble with spider instrument angles and orientations. However, at the end of the night, we tested the guider on a BOSS cartridge, and it worked... for ~15 minutes. Please see the end of the log for details. We determined the BOSS spectrograph collimator limit values (see log), and tested the collimator IDL program (results in problem section, instructions in log). Note: To move the collimator motors, use the 'boss moveColl' command, and NOT the 'boss pistonCollimator' command. The second half of the night, we worked with the BOSS team and collected several calibrations and science exposures with cartridges 10 and 11. BOSS has now seen starlight! We again had the same problem as last night: The imager server hung on the iopUtils.tcl process and would not let us run endNight. Last spectro fill was at 3:30am. The dewer will need to be replaced before noon. ---=== OBSERVING LOG ===--- Afternoon: ---------- We killed and restarted the servers. The problems with the imager server hanging was fixed from last night. endNight completed for last night's MJD (55088). Completed imager bias. There have been repeated errors given in the STUI alerts window about: Serious boss.SP2LN2Fill Reported by camCheck We fixed these errors by running: boss sp2cam raw=1 stopfillseq boss sp2cam raw=1 startfillseq Fiducial at 45 degrees still not registering (moving the telescope up and down). 01:03Z - Started ventilating. Note: The spectrographs took 35 minutes to fill today. The previous fill was nine hours ago. The pressure building valve on the dewer was turned on, and the rotator was moved to 35 degrees for the fill. Night: ------ Delayed opening at sunset due to some dense clouds to the north. 02:20Z - Mounted MARVELS cartridge 1. 02:29Z - Opened enclosure to partly cloudy skies. 02:30Z - Slewed to the field. Took guider flat. Adjusted focus. platedb i activePlugging=1,3504,A,55083,1,297.9640,41.0190,-50,5.0 Worked with Paul on the guider until 05:30Z. We are still having trouble with the orientation of spider angles and which directions in alt, az, and rot we want to move the guide stars. We were able to successfully guide with one star within fiber 10, but are still not to the point where we can guide with all of the stars yet. We determined the approximate limits of the BOSS spectrograph collimators. The results are below: Sp1: ---- a -37000 -> 17000 b -36000 -> 16000 c -36000 -> 18000 Sp2: ---- a 0 -> 53000 b 0 -> 52000 c 0 -> 54000 Note: The 'boss moveColl a=* b=* c=*' command was consistent with the amount of ticks we wanted the collimators to move by. ***Do not use the 'boss pistonCollimator' command because no matter what values you want to move the collimators by, it will always move by +1000 ticks.*** For example: > boss pistonCollimator spec=sp1 ticks=5000 sp1 went from -2788, -2668, -2672 to -1785, -1668, -1673 > boss moveColl spec=sp1 a=5000 b=5000 c=5000 sp1 went from -1785, -1668, -1673 to 3215, 3332, 3326 05:45Z - Mounted BOSS cartridge 10. During the change, the BOSS team took a 10 second image with the cartridge unmounted and the spectrographs doors open with a flashlight shining on the ground. They were pleased with the results. platedb i activePlugging=10,3552,A,55086,1,334.0000,0.0000,0,5.0 06:00Z - Took three hartman exposures and ran collimate with the new *temparary* procedure (see below). Login to observer@sos3 Go into the following directory: /home/observer/development/idlspec2d_v5_4 Type: setup -v -r . Type: idlspec2d idl IDL> collimate, ******L Note: choose the middle hartmann exposure We adjusted the collimators according to the results of collimate: sp1 moved by +9000 steps while sp2 moved by +2200 steps. 06:25Z - Took three more hartmanns and ran collimate again. However, we though we set the sp1 red camera to be in focus, the results say that we are still +3600 steps off. So, maybe there is some variablility with the ARC lamps? 06:50Z - Aquired the field by adjusting the offsets in az, alt, and rot. 07:00Z - Began taking a series of 10 minute exposures. Exposure numbers: 101452-54. 07:40Z - Took one flat and one arc. Exposure numbers: 101455-56. 07:45Z - Moved telescope to azimuth 225, altitude 30, rotator 0 - directly northwest. 07:48Z - Took one flat and one arc. Exposure numbers: 101457-58. 08:00Z - Took a series of 5 minute exposures. Lots of intermittent clouds. Exposure numbers: 101459-61 08:19Z - Moved telescope to 75,30,0 - east/southeast. Took a flat and an arc. Exposure numbers: 101462-63. 08:27Z - Took a series of 5 minutes exposures. Exposure numbers 101464-66. 08:59Z - Mounted BOSS cart 11. platedb i activePlugging=10,3552,A,55086,1,334.0000,0.0000,0,5.0 09:00Z - Moved telescope to 121,30. We turned on the arc lamps ~10 minutes early in order to warm them up before taking the hartmann exposures. This might have been what caused the funny results to show up within collimate. 09:05Z - Began taking hartmann exposures manually through STUI. Exposure numbers: 101467-69 09:07Z - Hooked up the LN2 lines and forced the spectrographs to fill. We recieved an alert - boss SP2LN2Fill. 09:14Z - Ran collimate a third time (exposure numbers 101470-72). This time, sp1 was calling for a move of +2000 steps, while sp2 wanted to move 730 steps. We adjusted the collimators by these amounts and took another series of hartmann exposures. The final motor positions are: motorPosition=6168,5797,5791,6860,7043,6615. 09:30Z - Stopped the spectrograph fill after ~55lbs and unhooked the lines. 09:33Z - Slewed to the field (cart 11). Adjusted offsets, focus, and scale with our best guesses. We started the guider when we centered the star within fiber 3, even though we were missing stars within fibers 16, 13, and 15. The guider brought all of the stars into view and kept them there. The guider worked! 09:55Z - Started a flat and an arc. Exposure numbers: 101473-74. 10:08Z - Began a 10 minute exposure with the guider running. Exposure number: 101476. Note: disreguard exposure 101475 because the exposure time was wrong. About half way through this exposure, we lost several guide stars. Over the course of ~15 minutes, the guider allowed some stars to slowly drift off the fibers (all random directions). We disabled the guider and manually input offsets to bring the stars back into view. 10:21Z - With most of the guide stars in the field, we began the next couple of exposures, numbers 101477-78. Meanwhile we tested the guider again with the majority of the stars visible, but we didn't see any change in the offsets. Things neither got worse, nor got better. 10:43Z - David notified us that the hartman mask was accidently left in. Bummer. We issued the 'boss hartmann out' command to remove the mask. 10:47Z - Another flat and arc. 101479-80. 10:58Z - Took another series of exposures, but there were several guide stars missing from the field. While exposing, we applied offsets but while some stars were centered, others would disappear completely. Exposure numbers: 101481-83. 11:42Z - We closed the enclosure and stopped ventilating. 11:47Z - endNight again had the same problems as yesterday. The imager server gets frozen at trying to source the iopUtils.tcl whenever an iop window is created. We were unable to run endNight. ---=== IMAGING RUN SUMMARY ===--- Run Time Stripe Lambda Last Flavor Comments Start End Begin End Frame ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 8031 23:50Z 00:10Z 100 O 60.85 65.72 47 ignore ---=== IMAGING RUN DETAILS ===--- ---=== SKIPPY RESULTS ===--- Run Frame nFrames stars muErr muRms nuErr nuRms rot az el --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---=== LTMATCH RESULTS ===--- Run Field nFields alt az nGood rowMean rowSig colMean colSig rot ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== SPECTROSCOPY DATA SUMMARY ===--- Summary Checked (y/n): QA Procedures Done (y/n): UT Exp Time flavor comment (S/N)^2 totals ========================================== b1 r1 b2 r2 ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE I ===--- Time Instrument Az Alt Rot Scale pos offset pos offset pos offset ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== TELESCOPE OFFSETS AND SCALE II ===--- ---=== FOCUS LOG ===--- setmir piston Temp Wind Time Inst scale M1 M2 Foc Az Alt (C) MPH Dir filt fwhm ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---=== WEATHER LOG ===--- Wind Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust DIMM Sky 23:53Z 58 44 7 288 (WNW) 664 - Partly cloudy 00:25Z 57 43 5 281 (W) 714 - " 00:57Z 57 42 1 256 (WSW) 763 - " 01:29Z 57 42 3 261 (W) 727 - " 02:01Z 56 43 6 260 (W) 722 - " 02:34Z 56 43 5 262 (W) 758 - Mostly clear 03:06Z 56 43 7 226 (SW) 784 - " 03:38Z 56 43 7 224 (SW) 777 - " 04:10Z 57 41 5 268 (W) 706 - " 04:42Z 57 41 5 277 (W) 767 - " 05:14Z 57 41 8 278 (W) 607 - " 05:47Z 56 41 7 261 (W) 667 - " 06:19Z 55 42 7 218 (SW) 681 - " 06:51Z 56 42 7 220 (SW) 661 - " 07:23Z 55 41 7 220 (SW) 582 - Partly cloudy 07:55Z 55 43 6 202 (SSW) 676 - " 08:27Z 55 42 6 256 (WSW) 661 - " 09:00Z 55 42 5 260 (W) 655 - " 09:32Z 53 41 7 271 (W) 647 - Clear 10:04Z 55 41 7 290 (WNW) 571 - " 10:36Z 54 41 6 316 (NW) 597 - " 11:08Z 51 42 9 326 (NW) 667 - 11:40Z 53 42 11 342 (NNW) 640 - ---=== TELESCOPE STATUS ===--- 01:03Z - Began ventilation.
